Axes, crossbows, and tridents are excellent specialists rather than universal replacements. The right choice changes with your edition, target, terrain, enchantments, and willingness to trade speed or safety for burst damage.
Every weapon ranked at a glance
There is no authoritative, single damage score that ranks one weapon across every Java and Bedrock version. This ranking instead weighs dependable damage, attack or firing cadence, range, resource demands, enchantment depth, learning curve, mobility, and edition-specific behavior. Treat the order as a practical survival and combat guide, not as a universal laboratory damage table.

| Rank | Weapon | Best use | Why it ranks here | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Netherite sword | All-purpose melee | Reliable attacks, broad enchantment support, and strong everyday utility | Requires close range; Java crowd control depends on timing and Sweeping Edge |
| 2 | Bow | General ranged combat | Repeatable long-range damage and flexible positioning in nearly every biome | Needs time to draw and a supply of arrows unless its enchantment setup reduces consumption |
| 3 | Mace | Planned burst damage | Falling smash attacks can reach the highest burst ceiling when you control the drop | Much less dependable on flat ground; a missed drop can create fall risk |
| 4 | Axe | Heavy hits and Java shield pressure | Strong individual strikes and useful shield interaction in Java combat | Slower cadence is less forgiving for ordinary survival fights |
| 5 | Crossbow | Prepared volleys and special ammunition | Can be loaded before contact and supports several distinctive firing options | Rewards preparation and burst timing instead of continuous shooting |
| 6 | Trident | Water, weather, and hybrid combat | Combines melee and throwing, with mobility and utility enchantments | Harder to obtain reliably and more dependent on environment or setup |
1. Netherite sword: the safest all-purpose melee choice
The netherite sword is the dependable default for exploration, caves, farms, and ordinary mob fights. It does not require a special arena, a prepared firing lane, a weather condition, or a carefully measured jump. You can keep it ready while moving through cramped terrain and respond immediately when an enemy reaches you.
Why the sword is so consistent
- Its melee role is straightforward: stay in range, manage your timing, and keep attacking.
- It has unusually broad support for useful combat and utility enchantments, including Sharpness, Smite, Fire Aspect, Knockback, Looting, and Unbreaking.
- In Java Edition, Sweeping Edge adds an important crowd-control consideration when several enemies are grouped together.
- It remains useful across mixed enemy types, so one carefully built sword can cover most routine trips.
Recommended sword builds
Choose Sharpness when the same sword must handle a mixture of enemies. Choose Smite for work dominated by undead targets; it is a specialization rather than an upgrade that can simply be stacked with Sharpness. Looting is the practical choice when drops matter, while Fire Aspect and Knockback change how safely you can control distance. Mending and Unbreaking are the durability choices for a weapon you expect to carry constantly.

- The design stays true to the unique, pixelated world of Minecraft!

Do not judge the sword only by its first hit. Its value comes from repeatability, crowd control, and the number of situations in which its enchantments remain useful. That reliability is why it takes the overall melee position even though other weapons can produce more dramatic single attacks.
2. Bow: the best general ranged weapon
A fully drawn bow delivers repeatable long-range damage while letting you choose the distance and angle of an encounter. It works in open terrain, from defensive positions, and against targets that are inconvenient or dangerous to approach. For a player who wants one ranged weapon that fits most situations, the bow is the strongest default.
What its enchantments change
- Power raises arrow damage and is the core damage choice.
- Flame adds fire to arrows, which can alter both damage and target behavior.
- Punch adds knockback, helping you preserve distance or interrupt an approach.
- Infinity can reduce normal-arrow consumption under its rules, making ammunition management easier for a bow that meets the enchantment’s requirements.
- Mending and Unbreaking support long-term use when durability matters more than ammunition convenience.
The bow rewards calm positioning. Draw before exposing yourself, use cover when possible, and keep enough room to retreat. Its main trade-off is cadence: every shot requires a draw, so a player who fires hurriedly or allows an enemy into melee range loses much of the weapon’s advantage.

3. Mace: the highest conditional burst ceiling
The mace, introduced with the 1.21 weapon set, is built around a falling smash attack. Its damage scales with the blocks of falling distance completed before impact, as described in the official 1.21 documentation. That mechanic gives it the highest burst potential in this ranking when you can deliberately create and land a drop.
Where the mace excels
- Planned attacks from towers, ledges, or other elevated positions
- Ambushes in which you control the enemy’s location and your landing point
- Encounters where one decisive impact is more valuable than a steady series of ordinary hits
Why it is not the universal best weapon
A smash requires the right geometry, timing, and confidence. Flat ground removes much of the weapon’s defining advantage. A miss can leave you exposed or create fall damage, and a chaotic fight may not give you time to arrange a safe drop. Carrying a mace alongside a dependable sword is therefore more sensible than replacing every melee option with it.

The mace has its own enchantment decisions. Density and Wind Burst are documented mace enchantments; select a build according to whether you want to maximize the impact itself or use the weapon’s movement-oriented potential. These choices do not make every encounter a falling-attack encounter, so keep the terrain and your escape route in mind.
4. Axe: heavy hits and Java shield pressure
An axe trades attack speed for a stronger individual hit and additional utility. That exchange is attractive when you can predict an opening, punish a shield user, or end a fight with fewer committed swings. It is less comfortable when several enemies surround you or when every missed timing window matters.
Edition-specific behavior
Java combat guides commonly identify the axe’s ability to disable shields as a major advantage. That interaction should not be generalized to Bedrock: combat timing and weapon behavior differ by edition and version. Label your target edition before choosing an axe for player-versus-player combat.
Useful axe enchantments
Microsoft’s enchantment documentation lists Sharpness, Smite, Fire Aspect, and Unbreaking as axe-compatible choices. Sharpness is the mixed-target option; Smite serves undead-heavy work. Fire Aspect changes the outcome of a successful hit, while Unbreaking extends service life. As with swords, Sharpness and Smite are alternative damage paths, not additive upgrades that can all occupy the same build.
For ordinary exploration, the slower cadence makes an axe less forgiving than a sword. For deliberate heavy strikes or Java shield pressure, however, that same trade-off can be exactly what you want.

5. Crossbow: prepared burst and special ammunition
The crossbow is the preparation-focused ranged weapon. You can load it before a fight, hold the shot while moving, and release it when an enemy enters the chosen lane. That behavior suits raids, ambushes, defensive positions, and players who prefer a planned volley over a continuous draw-and-release rhythm.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIts distinct firing options
- Quick Charge reduces the time needed to prepare another shot.
- Multishot broadens the attack into a spread, useful when targets are grouped.
- Piercing changes how a projectile interacts with targets in line.
- Firework rockets provide a special ammunition route and support a different burst pattern from ordinary arrows.
The crossbow’s advantage is not simply “more damage.” It is the ability to decide when a loaded attack happens and to tailor the ammunition or enchantment to the encounter. Its cost is tempo: compared with a bow, it rewards setup and timing rather than constant shooting. Carry it when you can anticipate contact, not as an automatic replacement for a bow in every expedition.
6. Trident: the strongest environmental specialist
A trident occupies an unusual middle ground because it functions in melee and as a thrown weapon. It can therefore cover situations that would otherwise require two different tools, but its best features depend on obtaining the weapon and selecting the right enchantment for the environment.
What its enchantments enable
- Loyalty returns a thrown trident to you, making repeated throws practical.
- Riptide launches the player in water or rain, adding movement as well as attack utility.
- Channeling can summon lightning when its conditions are met.
- Impaling is another documented trident enchantment for a specialized damage build.
Water travel, rain, and weather-aware combat make the trident unusually versatile. On dry ground without the relevant conditions, its mobility and utility advantages are narrower. It is also harder to obtain reliably than the standard melee and ranged choices, so it belongs in a specialist slot unless your world and play style revolve around water or storms.
Enchantment decisions that change the ranking
An enchantment is not a universal power-up; it changes what a weapon is for. Microsoft Learn describes enchantments as properties that improve an item’s existing abilities or give it additional abilities. Build around the job you actually perform instead of trying to combine mutually exclusive damage paths.

| Weapon | Documented enchantment roles | Build question |
|---|---|---|
| Sword | Sharpness, Smite, Fire Aspect, Looting, Knockback, Sweeping Edge in Java, Mending, Unbreaking | Do you need mixed-target reliability, undead specialization, drops, or crowd control? |
| Axe | Sharpness, Smite, Fire Aspect, Unbreaking | Are heavy individual hits or shield-oriented Java combat worth slower attacks? |
| Bow | Power, Flame, Punch, Infinity, Mending, Unbreaking | Is your priority damage, distance control, fire, or reduced normal-arrow consumption? |
| Crossbow | Quick Charge, Multishot, Piercing | Do you want faster follow-up shots, a spread, or a line-of-target effect? |
| Trident | Loyalty, Channeling, Impaling, Riptide | Will the weapon be used for returning throws, storms, aquatic targets, or movement? |
| Mace | Density, Wind Burst | Can you consistently create and survive the falling attacks that define the weapon? |
Sharpness versus Smite is the clearest example of a decision rather than a straight upgrade. Sharpness supports mixed enemies; Smite is the undead-damage route. The same principle applies to choosing a trident built around Loyalty or Riptide: each supports a different way of playing.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition: what must be labeled
Do not publish or rely on one universal damage table without naming the edition and version. Attack timing, axe behavior, shield interaction, Sweeping Edge, and mace testing can differ between Java and Bedrock. The official material covers both Java and Bedrock 1.21, but that does not make every combat result interchangeable.
Java-specific considerations
- Attack cooldown and deliberate timing are central to Java melee decisions.
- Sweeping Edge makes sword crowd control a meaningful part of the Java evaluation.
- Axe shield disabling is a major Java consideration for player-versus-player combat.
Bedrock-specific considerations
Bedrock players should verify the behavior of the weapon and enchantment in the exact game version and server rules they use rather than importing Java assumptions. A sword remains the safest general melee recommendation, but the relative value of an axe, the timing of attacks, and the practical feel of a mace should be tested in Bedrock conditions.

| Situation | Primary choice | Reason | Backup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mixed exploration and cave fighting | Netherite sword | Immediate close-range response and broad enchantment support | Bow for targets that should be kept at distance |
| Open terrain or dangerous approach | Bow | Long range lets you control spacing | Crossbow when a loaded shot or special ammunition is more useful |
| Prepared ambush from above | Mace | Falling distance converts setup into burst damage | Sword if the fight moves onto flat ground |
| Java shield-oriented PvP | Axe | Its shield interaction and heavy hit fit the matchup | Sword for faster, more forgiving follow-up attacks |
| Raid or planned volley | Crossbow | Can be loaded before contact and configured for spread or piercing | Bow for sustained flexible shooting |
| Water, rain, or lightning-focused play | Trident | Combines throwing, melee, movement, and weather utility | Bow or sword when conditions are absent |
A practical loadout for most players
- Make the netherite sword your default hotbar melee slot and choose Sharpness for mixed enemies, or Smite if your work is specifically undead-heavy.
- Add Mending and Unbreaking when the weapon must survive repeated expeditions.
- Carry a bow for targets you should not approach. Power is the core damage choice; add Punch or Flame for distance control or fire utility.
- Choose one specialist only when its scenario is common for you: a mace for planned drops, an axe for heavy Java hits or shield pressure, a crossbow for prepared volleys, or a trident for water and weather play.
- Label your own testing notes with Java or Bedrock, the game version, and the server’s combat rules. Do not transfer a result from one edition to the other without checking it.
If you want to test these loadouts with friends, Godlike.Host Minecraft hosting offers Java, Bedrock, and modded Minecraft servers through its own game panel.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling the mace “the best” without the condition
The mace’s falling-distance scaling is powerful, but only when you can create a controlled drop and land safely. Flat-ground fights and chaotic movement favor the sword’s consistency.

Using Java advice in Bedrock
Shield behavior, attack timing, and other combat details are edition-specific. State the edition before making an axe or damage claim.
Stacking incompatible damage goals
Sharpness and Smite represent different target priorities. Pick the one that matches your enemies instead of treating both as mandatory upgrades.
Choosing a specialist as a daily carry
Crossbows, tridents, axes, and maces can be excellent, but each asks you to accept a narrower cadence, environment, or preparation requirement. Keep the sword and bow as the stable foundation unless your routine clearly favors another tool.

Minecraft: Guide to Combat, published by Random House Worlds in 2021, is a 96-page hardcover reference (ISBN 9780593355886). It predates the 1.21 mace, so it should not be treated as a complete guide to every current weapon. It can still serve as a printed introduction to combat fundamentals, while current edition and version behavior should be checked in-game.
Final verdict
For one melee weapon, choose the fully enchanted netherite sword. For one ranged weapon, choose the bow. Add a mace when you can exploit vertical terrain, an axe when heavy Java hits or shield pressure matter, a crossbow when preparation and special ammunition are central, and a trident when water or weather makes its mobility and utility worthwhile. Enchant the weapon for its intended job, and always label Java-versus-Bedrock claims before comparing results.
