You do not need an Apple TV to watch iPhone videos on a television. The right method depends on the TV and the iPhone: use AirPlay on an AirPlay-enabled smart TV, cast from a compatible app to Chromecast or Google TV Streamer, use AirPlay on a supported Roku, or connect the phone directly with a connector-matched HDMI adapter.
AirPlay and Google Cast are wireless, while HDMI works with non-smart TVs and unreliable Wi-Fi. The sections below explain exactly what each method can do, what equipment it needs, and how to fix the common failures.

Choose the connection that fits your TV
| Method | Works with | What appears on the TV | Wi-Fi required | iPhone connector | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirPlay to a smart TV | AirPlay 2-enabled smart TVs | Whole-screen mirroring or video streamed from a supported app | Yes, both devices must use the same network | None | Some apps restrict AirPlay |
| Google Cast | Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), and Google Cast TVs | Playback from an app with a Cast button | Yes, both devices must use the same network | None | It is not a universal iPhone screen mirror |
| AirPlay through Roku | Roku players and Roku TVs whose model supports AirPlay | AirPlay streaming, control, content sharing, or screen mirroring | Usually, for wireless setup and playback | None | Compatibility varies by Roku model |
| HDMI adapter | Any TV with a usable HDMI input, including non-smart TVs | The iPhone display and compatible video output | No | Lightning or USB-C determines the adapter | Protected video requires an HDCP-compatible digital connection |
If your television already lists AirPlay, start there. If the video app has a Cast icon but the TV has no AirPlay, use a Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), or Google Cast TV. Choose a supported Roku when you want Roku features and AirPlay in one device. For an older television, poor Wi-Fi, travel, or a predictable offline connection, HDMI is the dependable fallback.

Check the requirements
- The TV must support AirPlay, normally identified as AirPlay or AirPlay 2 in its specifications or settings.
- The iPhone and TV must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Apple’s setup instruction is: “Connect your iPhone or iPad to the same Wi-Fi network as your Apple TV, AirPlay-compatible smart TV or Mac.”
- Both devices should be powered on and available on that network.
Mirror the whole iPhone screen
- Connect the iPhone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open Control Center. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the upper-right corner. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Tap Screen Mirroring.
- Select the television from the list.
- If a code appears on the TV, enter it on the iPhone.
The TV now shows the iPhone display. Open the Photos app, a browser, or another video source and start playback. To stop, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and choose Stop Mirroring.
Send only a video from an app or Photos
- Open the video in Photos or in an app that supports AirPlay.
- Tap the app’s AirPlay button. It may appear as a rectangle with a triangle, or inside the Share menu.
- Choose the TV.
- Use the iPhone as the remote when the app provides playback controls.
App playback is often cleaner than mirroring because the TV receives the video stream while the phone supplies controls. However, AirPlay availability is decided by each app. If the AirPlay button is missing or playback refuses to start, that app may not permit AirPlay for that video.
When AirPlay is the best choice
- You already own an AirPlay-enabled smart TV.
- You want both full-screen mirroring and one-tap video playback.
- You do not want to buy a receiver or cable.
2. Cast from an iPhone with Chromecast or Google TV Streamer
Google Cast works from iPhones running iOS 12 or later to Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), and televisions with Google Cast. The important distinction is that casting is app-based: the app must include a Google Cast button. It should not be treated as a universal mirror of every iPhone screen.

- A Chromecast, Google TV Streamer (4K), or TV with Google Cast enabled.
- An iPhone running iOS 12 or later.
- A video app that supports Google Cast.
- The iPhone and receiver connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
Cast a supported video
- Finish setting up the Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or Google Cast TV on the television.
- Join the iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network as the receiver.
- Open a Cast-enabled video app on the iPhone.
- Start a video, then tap the app’s Cast button.
- Select the television or receiver from the device list.
- Use the app’s controls to pause, seek, change volume, or disconnect.
Once connected, the receiver generally obtains the playback stream while the iPhone acts as a controller. You can leave the video app or use the phone for other tasks only as far as that particular app allows; casting does not make every iPhone screen appear on the TV.

- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Confirm app support before buying hardware
Open the video service you intend to use and look for the Cast icon. If it is absent, Chromecast may not solve your specific problem. A Cast-enabled app can still behave differently by video, account, or region, so test the service you actually watch before purchasing a receiver.
When Google Cast is the best choice
- Your preferred apps consistently show a Cast button.
- Your TV supports Google Cast but not AirPlay.
- You prefer a wireless receiver and app-controlled playback rather than full-screen mirroring.
3. Use AirPlay through a compatible Roku
Roku documents AirPlay streaming, control, content sharing, and screen mirroring from an iPhone to compatible Roku streaming devices and Roku TVs. This can add AirPlay to a television that does not have it built in, but support is not universal across Roku hardware.
Verify the Roku model
Check the product specifications or Roku’s current compatibility information before buying or installing a device. The model must explicitly support AirPlay. A Roku device that lacks AirPlay cannot receive an iPhone mirror merely because it is connected to the same network.

Connect with AirPlay
- Connect the Roku and iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network.
- On the Roku, complete any required software update and enable AirPlay in its settings if the option is present.
- For a full mirror, open Control Center on the iPhone and tap Screen Mirroring.
- Select the Roku device or Roku TV.
- Enter the on-screen code if Roku displays one.
For supported video apps, use the AirPlay button inside the app instead of mirroring the entire display. That keeps the Roku in playback mode and lets the iPhone remain a controller.

When Roku makes sense
- You already use Roku and want to add iPhone playback.
- You are replacing a TV and want a model with both Roku and AirPlay support.
- You need AirPlay but your existing television does not include it.
4. Connect the iPhone directly with HDMI
A wired HDMI connection works with a non-smart TV, a television without usable wireless features, or a situation where Wi-Fi is unavailable. The adapter must match the iPhone’s physical port.
Identify the iPhone port
| iPhone port | Required adapter | Typical connection |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning | Lightning Digital AV Adapter | iPhone → Lightning Digital AV Adapter → HDMI cable → TV |
| USB-C | USB-C display/AV adapter or USB-C-to-HDMI cable | iPhone → USB-C adapter or cable → HDMI cable or TV input |
iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C, so start with USB-C-to-HDMI options. Older Lightning models require the Lightning Digital AV Adapter. Do not buy an adapter based only on the word “iPhone”; match the port shown on your phone.
Set up a Lightning iPhone
- Plug the Lightning Digital AV Adapter into the iPhone.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to an HDMI input on the TV.
- If the adapter has a pass-through power port, connect the iPhone charger to it when the adapter requires or benefits from external power.
- Turn on the TV and select the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Unlock the iPhone and start the video.
Set up a USB-C iPhone
- Connect a USB-C display/AV adapter or compatible USB-C-to-HDMI cable to the iPhone.
- Connect HDMI to the adapter and the TV, unless the cable already provides the complete USB-C-to-HDMI link.
- Supply power through the adapter’s pass-through port if it has one and the phone or adapter needs power.
- Select the matching HDMI input on the TV.
- Play the video on the iPhone.
Apple’s USB-C documentation says compatible USB-C iPhones can connect to an HDMI television with a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable. HDMI 2.0-capable accessories can output up to 4K at 60 Hz where the iPhone, adapter, cable, and TV all support it. That maximum is a capability, not a guarantee for every combination.

Why HDMI is preferable to VGA
Use a digital AV or HDMI adapter for normal television viewing. Apple notes that VGA does not carry audio, so a VGA setup may require a separate audio path. HDMI carries the picture and audio together and is the more suitable choice for videos.

Understand HDCP restrictions
Films, TV shows, and some streaming apps require an HDCP-compatible digital connection. If the TV shows a blank screen, an error, or video without the expected picture, the adapter, cable path, or display may not satisfy that requirement. Replacing a low-quality or incompatible adapter with a compliant digital AV adapter is the practical fix; changing the TV input alone will not overcome an HDCP failure.
When HDMI is the best choice
- The TV is not smart or has no AirPlay or Cast support.
- Wi-Fi is weak, unavailable, captive, or deliberately disabled.
- You are presenting, travelling, or need a direct connection that does not depend on device discovery.
- The video app does not support AirPlay or Google Cast but permits wired output.
How to decide in common situations
| Your situation | Recommended route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The TV already has AirPlay | AirPlay | No extra receiver is needed, and you can mirror or send individual videos. |
| The TV has Google Cast and your app has a Cast button | Google Cast | Wireless app playback is supported directly by the service. |
| You own or want a Roku | AirPlay-compatible Roku | It can receive AirPlay, provided the exact model supports it. |
| The TV is non-smart | Connector-matched HDMI adapter | HDMI adds a direct video path without smart-TV features. |
| Wi-Fi is unavailable or unreliable | HDMI | The cable connection does not depend on network discovery. |
| You have an iPhone 15 or later | USB-C-to-HDMI option, or a supported wireless method | These iPhones use USB-C. |
| You have an older Lightning iPhone | Lightning Digital AV Adapter, or a supported wireless method | Lightning and USB-C adapters are not interchangeable. |
What each method can and cannot mirror
Full-screen mirroring
AirPlay screen mirroring and compatible Roku AirPlay mirroring send the iPhone display to the television. This is useful for Photos, websites, presentations, and apps that do not provide their own TV playback button. It also means the TV follows the phone’s screen activity rather than receiving only a dedicated video stream.
App-based casting
Google Cast requires a Cast-enabled app. AirPlay from an app likewise depends on that app exposing an AirPlay control and permitting the selected content. These modes are designed for playback from the service, not for showing every screen on the iPhone.
Wired display output
HDMI sends the iPhone’s compatible display output through the adapter. It avoids wireless discovery, but protected services still enforce HDCP and may reject an incompatible adapter or digital path.

Troubleshoot a wireless connection
The TV does not appear
- Confirm that the iPhone and TV, receiver, or Roku are on the same Wi-Fi network, not merely connected to the same internet service through separate networks.
- Check that AirPlay is enabled on the TV or Roku and that the Roku model supports it.
- For Google Cast, open a known Cast-enabled app and look for its Cast button; the receiver will not appear through an app that has no Cast support.
- Restart the phone and receiver, then try discovery again.
AirPlay starts but the video will not play
Try the app’s own AirPlay button instead of whole-screen mirroring. If that control is missing or the video remains blocked, the app may restrict AirPlay for that content. In that case, use a supported Cast option if the app provides one, or switch to a wired HDMI connection with a compliant digital adapter.
Google Cast connects but playback stops
Keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi network, reopen the Cast-enabled app, and reconnect from its Cast button. Test another video in the same app to determine whether the failure affects one title or the service’s casting function.
Troubleshoot an HDMI connection
The TV says “No signal”
- Confirm that the HDMI cable is plugged into the adapter and the selected TV input.
- Cycle through the TV’s HDMI inputs and select the one physically used.
- Disconnect and reconnect the adapter at the iPhone.
- Connect power to the adapter’s pass-through port when available.
- Try a different HDMI cable or input.
There is a picture but no sound
Use HDMI rather than VGA for a normal video setup. VGA does not carry audio. Also check the TV’s volume and audio-output selection before assuming the iPhone is at fault.

Streaming films and some television apps may require HDCP. A cheap, damaged, or noncompliant adapter can work with Photos yet fail with protected video. Use a compatible digital AV or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and a direct HDMI connection to the TV, avoiding unsupported converters in between.
Buying checklist
- Identify whether the TV lists AirPlay, Google Cast, or neither.
- For Google Cast, verify that the exact apps you watch display a Cast button.
- For Roku, verify AirPlay support for the exact model, not just the Roku brand.
- For HDMI, identify whether the iPhone has Lightning or USB-C.
- Choose a digital HDMI adapter for video and audio; do not substitute VGA unless you have a separate audio plan.
- Check HDCP compatibility when protected streaming video matters.
- Allow for pass-through power if the selected adapter includes a power port or behaves unreliably without charging.
Extra hardware costs vary by region, model, and current listings, so compare the exact adapter or receiver specification rather than relying on a generic product name. The built-in AirPlay route has no receiver requirement; Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, Roku, and HDMI setups require the corresponding hardware when the TV does not already provide it.
Bottom line: the shortest reliable path
Use AirPlay when your TV already supports it. Use Google Cast only when the app you want to watch has a Cast button. Choose a Roku model that explicitly supports AirPlay if Roku is part of your setup. For a non-smart TV, absent Wi-Fi, or an app with wireless restrictions, connect the iPhone to HDMI with the adapter that matches its port: Lightning Digital AV Adapter for Lightning iPhones, or USB-C display/AV hardware for USB-C iPhones.
