Best Ways to Traverse ARC Raiders Maps Without a Grappling Hook

You can cross ARC Raiders maps without the Grappling Hook, but you must plan around connected ground, ladders, stairs, slopes, doors and usable ziplines instead of treating every roof, cliff or gap as reachable. The Grapple Hook is specifically described as a way to climb hard-to-reach places, abseil from buildings and swing over large gaps, so its absence removes those direct shortcuts. Your replacement is a slower, evidence-based route: identify a continuous path, confirm every vertical transition, and avoid committing to a gap or drop until the landing is clearly traversable.

The advice below is deliberately practical rather than a list of unverified coordinates. Terrain, vaulting and map infrastructure can change with patches, and the official material does not establish one universally best route or an exact non-hook control sequence for every map.

What changes when the Grappling Hook is not equipped?

The Grapple Hook has three distinct traversal functions in the official Frozen Trail preview: climbing to hard-to-reach locations, abseiling from buildings and swinging over large gaps (Embark Studios’ Frozen Trail First Look). Without it, those actions are not substitutes for an ordinary jump. A roof that is accessible by a grapple may require an interior stairwell, a ladder, a ramp or a completely different approach when you are carrying another gadget.

Think of a map as a network of connected surfaces. A viable route has a walkable surface between each elevation change, a confirmed way through every doorway or barrier, and a landing that does not depend on a last-second swing. If one link is missing, treat the route as unconfirmed and keep searching rather than gambling your run.

The three questions to ask at every obstacle

  • Can I reach the next surface from ground level? Look for a ramp, stairs, ladder, sloped rock, open doorway or low ledge that supports normal movement or a visible vault.
  • Can I leave that surface safely? A roof may be reachable but still be a dead end if the only exit is a grapple point or a large drop.
  • What happens if the connection fails? Account for a fall, a long detour, exposure to enemies and the time needed to recover.

These checks are route-planning guidance, not a guarantee that every similarly shaped object behaves identically. ARC Raiders’ traversal geometry is live and has been adjusted in updates.

Scan for a connected ground route before taking a shortcut

When you arrive at a new area, pause long enough to read the space. Trace the lowest continuous route first: roads, paths, courtyards, building entrances and broad rock shelves. Only after that should you evaluate elevated alternatives. A ground route often looks slower on the map but is more reliable than a climb that depends on an uncertain auto-step.

Use visual route markers

  • Stairs and ramps: Follow their full length with your camera. Confirm that they terminate on the level you need, rather than at a locked door or a broken platform.
  • Doors and interior corridors: Buildings frequently provide the most predictable vertical movement. Check both sides of a structure before assuming its exterior is the intended entrance.
  • Walkable slopes: Broad, gradual slopes are preferable to a series of small ledges. Approach at an angle that keeps your character on the surface instead of aiming directly at a sharp lip.
  • Low ledges: Test a ledge from a stable position and look for the game’s normal vault or step behavior. Do not chain several untested ledges while under fire.

When visibility is poor, move in short sections. Reach one secure surface, stop, and reassess the next connection. This prevents a single mistaken assumption from carrying you into a dead end.

Do not infer a route from the destination alone

Seeing a rooftop, tower or ridge is not evidence that it is reachable without the hook. The official description of the hook’s swing and rappel functions exists precisely because some destinations are designed around special traversal. If the only apparent approach is a wide gap, sheer wall or exposed building face, mark it as hook-dependent until you locate a conventional connector.

Use ladders, stairs and doors as deliberate route connectors

Official ARC Raiders patch notes refer to ladders and ziplines as traversal objects, including a fix for a missing “Use Zipline” prompt (Flashpoint patch notes 1.22.0). A ladder or stairway that is visibly present is therefore a stronger route signal than an object that merely resembles a climbable surface.

How to approach a ladder

  1. Stand on a stable surface directly in front of the ladder rather than jumping toward it from an angle.
  2. Center your view on the ladder and wait for the interaction prompt, if one appears.
  3. Start the climb only after checking the top landing. A ladder can solve the vertical section while leaving you exposed or trapped above.
  4. At the top, step onto the landing before turning toward the next objective. Avoid immediately sprinting across an unverified edge.

The exact button or key depends on your platform and current control mapping. Use the on-screen interaction prompt and your settings rather than relying on a control sequence copied from another platform or an older build.

Prefer complete stair-and-door chains

A stairwell connected to a door, corridor and exterior exit is usually more useful than a single ladder to an isolated roof. Before climbing, look for the route’s next two transitions. If the top opens onto a courtyard or another staircase, you have a repeatable path; if it ends at a sealed surface, descend and find a different entrance.

Check both sides of a barrier

Fences, low walls and rubble can look like impassable boundaries from one direction and ordinary vault points from another. Circle the obstacle instead of repeatedly jumping at its highest face. The goal is to find the designed side of the connection, not to force a movement animation where none is available.

Use ziplines only when they are visibly available and usable

Ziplines can connect separated surfaces, but their availability depends on the route. Do not plan a crossing around a zipline that you have not seen in the current run. If a map-provided line is present, or a placed line gives you a clear, usable connection, treat it as an optional bridge rather than a universal replacement for the Grappling Hook.

Confirm the line before committing

  • Verify that both endpoints appear to connect to solid, reachable surfaces.
  • Look for the interaction prompt while positioned at the intended start point. The 1.22.0 patch notes specifically mention a missing “Use Zipline” prompt being fixed, so a prompt that does not appear should trigger a repositioning check rather than an immediate jump.
  • Check the landing for enemies, hazards or a second obstacle. A successful ride is not a successful route if the far side is a dead end.

Place lines away from intersecting geometry

The Frozen Trail 2.0 update states that ziplines break when they intersect something after placement (Frozen Trail 2.0 update, October 8, 2026). Give the line a clean corridor: avoid walls, roofs, poles, rock faces and other objects that can cross its path. If placement produces an obviously obstructed line, cancel the plan and reposition from a more open angle instead of assuming the line will repair itself.

Have a ground fallback

Before placing or boarding a zipline, identify the nearest ordinary route. A failed placement, a broken line or a contested landing should leave you with somewhere safe to retreat. This is particularly important when a line crosses a gap that cannot be jumped without the Grappling Hook.

Handle rocky terrain and vaults conservatively

Rock surfaces are not interchangeable. The Store Update 2.1.0 notes say rocky-terrain traversal was improved to reduce unintended sliding after climbing, while also recording a Pendola Pass Railyard location where players could not jump up or auto-step as expected (Store Update 2.1.0, October 13, 2026). Those two changes are a warning against treating one successful rock climb as proof that every ledge works the same way.

A safe rock-climb test

  1. Approach on foot, not at full sprint, so you can stop before the edge.
  2. Face the broadest part of the slope or ledge and attempt the normal movement or vault interaction.
  3. After gaining height, pause to confirm that your character is standing securely rather than sliding.
  4. Scan the next ledge before moving. If the next step is higher, narrow or separated by a gap, look for a ground route or ladder.

If the game refuses an expected auto-step, do not keep jumping at the same spot. Back away, circle the formation and test a lower angle. A patch may later change that exact location, so route instructions tied to a particular rock should always be checked against the current build.

Separate a vault from a gap

A vaultable lip is a short transition to an adjoining surface. A gap has empty space between takeoff and landing. Without the Grappling Hook’s swing function, a gap should be crossed only by a normal jump whose landing is clearly within ordinary movement capability or by a working zipline or other infrastructure. Never infer jump distance from a destination’s visual proximity.

Reaching rooftops without the Grappling Hook

Start inside or beside the building, not on the street facing the roof. Search for an entrance, stairwell, service ladder, attached ramp or neighboring structure that offers a continuous rise. Rooftop access is often a chain of small, ordinary transitions rather than one dramatic ascent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rooftop decision process

  1. Walk the building perimeter and identify every open door, stairwell and ladder.
  2. Check adjacent buildings for a lower roof or connecting walkway that leads to the same block.
  3. Look for a ramp or slope that reaches the roof edge without a sheer face.
  4. Confirm an exit route before climbing. If the roof has only a drop-off, use it as a temporary observation point, not as a planned through-route.
  5. If no conventional connector exists, mark the roof as hook-dependent and continue at ground level.

This approach answers the practical question “How do I get up to rooftops without the Grappling Hook?” without promising that every roof has a non-hook entrance. The correct answer is sometimes that the roof is not part of your available route in that loadout.

Compare routes by risk, not just distance

When two paths reach the same objective, compare the factors that determine whether you can complete the crossing under pressure. The official material does not publish route distances, traversal speeds or success rates, so the table below is a decision framework rather than a set of measured map statistics.

Factor Lower-risk option Questions to ask
Vertical gain Several stable stairs, ramps or ladders Is each transition supported by a visible connector, and can you descend the same way?
Gap width Continuous ground or a confirmed zipline Is there empty space that would normally require a swing or rappel?
Exposure Covered corridors, interiors or terrain with concealment How long are you visible to enemies or other Raiders while climbing?
Infrastructure dependence Ordinary movement with no single point of failure What happens if the ladder is blocked or the zipline prompt fails?
Fall or detour cost A route with a safe recovery surface nearby Would a missed vault cost health, equipment, time or the entire run?

A slightly longer path is often superior when it removes one irreversible fall or one contested zipline landing. Re-evaluate the choice if enemy activity, map conditions or a blocked door changes the exposure calculation.

  1. Set the objective and exit. Identify where you need to go and where you can retreat. Do not plan only the forward leg.
  2. Trace the lowest continuous path. Follow roads, paths, courtyards and open interiors before searching for elevation shortcuts.
  3. Mark every elevation change. Label each as stairs, ladder, ramp, walkable slope, vault, zipline or unconfirmed.
  4. Test one transition at a time. Stop on secure ground after each climb or vault and inspect the next connection.
  5. Reserve ziplines for confirmed links. Check prompts, endpoints and clearance before boarding or placing one.
  6. Choose the route with the cheapest failure. Prefer a detour over a gap, dead end or high-exposure climb when the objective is not time-critical.
  7. Recheck after a patch or return visit. Terrain behavior and individual spots can change, so do not assume an old route still works.

What to do when a route fails

The character will not vault or auto-step

Stop repeating the jump. Move laterally, approach the ledge from a lower or broader angle, and search for a nearby stair, ramp or ladder. The Pendola Pass Railyard issue documented in the 2.1.0 notes demonstrates that a location can fail to behave as players expect and then be changed by an update.

The ladder does not connect to a usable destination

Climb only if the top landing is clear. If the upper surface is blocked, exposed or isolated, descend and use the ladder as a landmark while looking for an interior route or a second connector. Do not jump from the top to compensate for a missing exit.

The zipline prompt is missing

Reposition until you are at the intended endpoint, ensure the line is intact and confirm that you are targeting the line rather than nearby geometry. The patch history shows that prompt behavior has required fixes, so a missing prompt is a reason to verify the object and route, not evidence that every zipline is decorative.

A placed zipline breaks

Move to an open placement angle and avoid intersecting walls, roofs, poles or rocks. The 2.0 update explicitly notes breakage when a placed line intersects something. If a clean placement is impossible, return to the ground route instead of spending more time on repeated attempts.

You reach a high surface with no way down

Stop before the final climb whenever possible and inspect the descent. If already stranded, look for a ladder, stairwell, sloped edge or safe lower platform. A fall that appears short can still be more expensive than the detour you avoided.

Map-specific caution: Pendola Pass and live geometry

Frozen Trail 2.0 added Pendola Pass and introduced items including the Grappling Hook, Tether Launcher and Snap Hook (official 2.0 update notes). The presence of those items does not mean every Pendola Pass route requires one, nor does it establish a best hook-free path. It does mean that route assumptions made before the area and item set changed may be obsolete.

The 2.1.0 notes identify a specific Pendola Pass Railyard spot where players could not jump up or auto-step as expected. Treat named locations as version-sensitive examples, not permanent rules. If you are following a guide, verify the exact geometry in your current session and build before committing valuable equipment or time.

Check map conditions before timing a traversal

The official ARC Raiders site presents a changing map-condition schedule (ARC Raiders official site). Conditions can affect whether an activity or route is available at a particular time, so check the current map screen or the official map-condition information when your plan depends on timing. Do not treat a route condition seen in a previous session as permanently active.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a hook-free run, this check is especially useful before choosing a route that depends on a specific activity, open infrastructure or a low-risk approach. If conditions make the direct path more dangerous, switch to the ground network you already identified rather than forcing a special traversal line.

Squad and solo habits that make hook-free travel safer

Solo play

  • Pause at each elevation change so you can retreat before entering a dead end.
  • Keep the nearest safe ground route in mind while testing a ladder, vault or zipline.
  • Use cover to observe the landing before exposing yourself on a roof or ridge.

Squad play

  • Have one Raider scout the landing while another watches the approach.
  • Call out whether a connector is a ladder, usable zipline, ordinary vault or unconfirmed ledge.
  • Do not send the whole squad onto an untested surface at once; preserve a fallback position until the first player confirms the exit.

These habits reduce the cost of the hook’s absence without pretending that ordinary movement removes every traversal risk.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Jumping because the destination looks close: visual distance does not prove a normal jump can cover a gap.
  • Assuming every ladder is a complete route: inspect the top landing and the next exit.
  • Placing a zipline through scenery: intersecting geometry can break a placed line.
  • Repeating a failed vault: circle the obstacle and look for the intended approach.
  • Using an old route video as a guarantee: patches can alter rocky traversal and individual spots.
  • Planning only the ascent: a safe route must include a way out or down.
  • Expecting exact universal controls: use the current on-screen prompt and platform mapping.
  • Calling one path the best for every run: exposure, enemy activity, map conditions and infrastructure availability change the decision.

How to verify a route before relying on it

Before you commit to a route in a live run, perform a low-cost reconnaissance pass. Walk the first section, confirm the first vertical connector, and identify the next fallback. If the route requires a zipline, verify both endpoints and its clearance. If it requires rocky movement, test the first ledge and make sure you can stop without sliding. Then decide whether the time saved justifies the remaining unknowns.

When sharing a route with other players, describe the connector and its dependency rather than publishing an absolute claim. “Enter through the stairwell, take the ladder, then use the visible zipline if its prompt appears” remains useful after a small geometry change; “this roof is always reachable from the east” can become misleading after a patch.

The practical answer

Without the Grappling Hook, traverse ARC Raiders by building routes from ordinary movement and confirmed infrastructure. Start with connected ground, use ladders and stairs for deliberate elevation changes, approach rocky ledges one at a time, and board or place ziplines only when their endpoints, prompt and clearance are clear. Treat wide gaps, sheer faces and isolated roofs as unconfirmed until a conventional connector proves otherwise. Because the game’s terrain, map conditions and traversal objects can change, verify any route in the current build instead of relying on a permanent list of “best” shortcuts.
