For a complete move to a new iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS setup transfer, preferably with a compatible USB-C data cable when supported. For a new Android phone, use its built-in iPhone copy flow, but plan a separate route for files and iCloud Photos. To send only a few nearby files from Android to iPhone, use Quick Share with AirDrop discovery on supported Android models, or its QR-code fallback. For an existing phone that is already set up, a computer or a cloud-library transfer is usually simpler.
The sections below separate whole-phone migration, one-off sharing, manual copying and cloud-library moves so you can choose without risking an incomplete transfer.

Choose the route by what you need to move
| Situation | Best starting point | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Android to a new iPhone | Move to iOS during iPhone setup; use a direct USB-C connection when your devices support it | Eligibility varies by device and software; check Apple’s current instructions |
| iPhone to a new Android | Android’s setup copy flow, using its wireless or cable option | Google says files and iCloud Photos are not included in that setup transfer |
| A few files from Android to iPhone nearby | Quick Share using AirDrop discovery on eligible Android phones | The iPhone must allow “Everyone for 10 minutes”; support is model-specific |
| A few files when AirDrop discovery is unavailable | Quick Share QR code | Internet is required; Google documents a 10 GB per 24-hour allowance and 24-hour file availability |
| Android photos or videos after iPhone setup is complete | Copy Android’s DCIM folder to a computer, then sync to iPhone | It is a manual process rather than a complete phone migration |
| An entire Google Photos library to iCloud Photos | Google Takeout’s direct transfer to iCloud Photos | Requires eligible accounts, iCloud capacity and supported formats; completion can take hours to days |
There is no single universal method for every Android model, iPhone generation, file type and account configuration. Decide first whether you are replacing a phone, sharing a handful of items or moving a cloud library.

Prepare before starting
- Check that the iPhone has enough free capacity for the Android content you intend to select. If the destination is too small, reduce the selection or free space before beginning.
- Keep both phones connected to power. A long photo and video transfer should not be interrupted by a depleted battery.
- If you plan to use a cable, confirm that it fits both ports and supports data, not only charging. Apple identifies a direct USB-C connection as a faster option for supported devices.
- Leave the iPhone in its initial setup process. The Move to iOS transfer is designed to run before setup is finished.
Use Move to iOS during setup
- Turn on the new iPhone and proceed through setup until the screen offering transfer from an Android device appears.
- On the Android phone, install and open Apple’s Move to iOS app if your device and software require it. Apple also documents a setup transfer without the app for some supported Android and iPhone combinations; the available choice depends on the current eligibility rules.
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions. You may transfer wirelessly, or connect the phones directly with USB-C where supported. Apple’s wording is: “Alternatively, you can also use a USB-C cable to directly connect your Android device and your iPhone for a faster transfer.”
- When the content list appears, select the categories you actually need. Include photos, videos, albums, files and folders as appropriate, rather than assuming every item will fit.
- Leave both devices near one another, powered and undisturbed until the iPhone’s progress indicator finishes. Do not switch to another task or disconnect a cable while the transfer is running.
- Complete iPhone setup and inspect important albums, conversations and documents before treating the Android phone as disposable.
Apps, music, books and PDFs can require separate handling. Apple’s migration guidance does not promise that every category moves automatically, so make a separate plan for anything not shown in the transfer selection.
If the iPhone is already set up
Apple’s manual Android-to-iOS instructions describe a computer fallback. Connect the Android phone to a computer, locate the commonly used DCIM folder, and copy the photos and videos to the computer. Then connect the iPhone and sync or import those files using the computer’s normal iPhone management process. This is appropriate when you cannot restart setup or when you want to select folders manually.
For documents, sign in to the same cloud-storage service on the iPhone if the files already live there. Otherwise, copy them to a computer and sync or import them to an iPhone app that supports the format. Keep the original Android files until you have opened representative photos, videos and documents on the iPhone.

Setup transfer steps
- Start the new Android phone and select the option to copy apps and data from an iPhone or iPad.
- Choose the wireless or cable method offered by the phone. If you use a cable, check that it supports data and that the connectors match both devices.
- Follow the pairing and permission prompts on both phones. Select the content categories offered by the Android setup assistant.
- Check available storage before confirming. Google instructs users to verify storage and keep the phones connected throughout the transfer.
- Do not disconnect either phone until the Android device reports completion. Review contacts, messages and photos before wiping the iPhone.
What this setup flow does not include
Google explicitly says that files and iCloud Photos do not transfer in this setup flow. Treat the setup copy as a phone-content migration, not as a complete export of every item in Apple’s cloud and Files storage. For an iCloud photo library, Google points users to a separate iCloud-to-Google Photos transfer process. For documents, download or export them from their current cloud location and upload them to the Android-compatible service you plan to use.
Send a few files from Android to iPhone nearby
For a handful of photos, videos or documents, a full migration is unnecessary. Google’s Quick Share instructions document two Android-to-iPhone paths. The first uses AirDrop discovery and is available only on supported Android models. Google lists Pixel 8a or later and certain phones from other manufacturers; the supported-device list is subject to change.
Quick Share with AirDrop discovery
- On the receiving iPhone, open Settings, then General, then AirDrop, and select Everyone for 10 Minutes. The recipient must make the iPhone discoverable this way for the Android transfer.
- On the Android phone, select the photos or files, choose Share, and select Quick Share.
- Choose the nearby iPhone when it appears through AirDrop discovery.
- Accept the AirDrop notification on the iPhone and wait for the files to finish saving.
- Afterward, the iPhone user can return AirDrop to a more restrictive setting if desired.
This is not a claim that every Android phone can send directly to every iPhone through AirDrop. If Quick Share does not show the iPhone, the model may not support the discovery route, the iPhone may not be set to the required visibility, or the devices may be too far apart.

Quick Share QR-code fallback
When AirDrop discovery is unavailable, Quick Share can generate a QR code. The iPhone scans the code with its camera, opens the transfer in a browser and downloads the shared items. This method requires an internet connection. Google documents a 10 GB allowance per 24-hour period and says the files remain available for 24 hours; these are service limits that can change, so confirm them in Google’s current help page.

AirDrop for sharing between Apple devices
AirDrop is Apple’s nearby-sharing feature for photos and files between Apple devices. Apple’s AirDrop guide says both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and must be nearby. That is useful when the sender and receiver are both using Apple hardware, but AirDrop alone is not the native Android-to-iPhone transfer method; use Quick Share’s documented routes for that direction.
Use a computer when the phones are already set up
A computer is the most controllable fallback when setup migration is no longer available or when you need to select folders one at a time. The process is especially practical for Android camera media.
- Connect the Android phone to the computer and choose its file-transfer mode if prompted.
- Open the phone storage and find the
DCIMfolder, where camera photos and videos are commonly stored. Copy the required folders to a clearly named computer folder. - Open several copied files on the computer to confirm that the transfer completed before disconnecting the Android phone.
- Connect the iPhone and use the computer’s supported photo-sync or import workflow to place the media on the iPhone.
- For documents, either sign in to the relevant cloud service on the iPhone or copy the files through the computer into an iPhone app that supports them.
This route gives you an intermediate backup and lets you omit duplicates or unwanted folders. It does not automatically recreate every Android app, message history, music library or book collection, so handle those categories separately.

Transfer a Google Photos library directly to iCloud Photos
If your goal is to move a cloud photo library rather than the contents of one handset, Apple documents a direct Google Takeout transfer in Transfer a copy of your photos and videos to iCloud Photos. The service copies eligible content from Google Photos into iCloud Photos without requiring you to download the entire library to the phone first.
Requirements and account checks
- Turn on iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive for the Apple Account that will receive the library.
- Ensure that iCloud has enough free storage for the incoming items. A transfer cannot complete if the destination lacks capacity.
- Use an eligible Google account and Apple Account. Apple lists exclusions including child accounts, Managed Apple Accounts and accounts with Advanced Data Protection enabled.
- Expect the process to take from hours to days, depending on the library and service processing.
Formats and destinations
Apple lists JPEG, HEIC, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP and most MP4 and MOV files as supported for iCloud Photos. Items that cannot be placed in iCloud Photos, including RAW files, are sent to iCloud Drive instead. This means a successful transfer may divide your collection between Photos and Drive; inspect both locations rather than assuming every item appears in the Photos timeline.
The transfer copies the Google Photos content and does not delete the Google originals. Keep the Google library until you have checked representative dates, albums and high-value files in the Apple account.

When moving the other direction
Google’s Android migration guidance separately points iPhone users toward an iCloud-to-Google Photos transfer for photos and videos. Do not confuse that cloud-library operation with Android’s in-setup phone copy: Google identifies iCloud Photos and files as exclusions from the setup flow.

Comparison: which method fits your constraints?
| Method | Best for | Setup state | Internet requirement | Capacity or format concerns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Move to iOS | Most Android content going to a new iPhone | iPhone must still be in initial setup | Wireless pairing may be available; a direct cable can be used on supported devices | iPhone storage must fit the selected content; categories vary by eligibility |
| Android setup copy | Core iPhone content going to a new Android | New Android setup | Wireless or cable prompts depend on the model | Files and iCloud Photos are excluded from this flow |
| Quick Share AirDrop discovery | A few Android files sent to a nearby iPhone | Both phones already usable | Nearby sharing; follow the device prompts | Only supported Android models expose this route; iPhone visibility must be enabled |
| Quick Share QR | A few files when discovery support is absent | Both phones already usable | Required | Google documents 10 GB per 24 hours and 24-hour availability |
| Computer copy and sync | Android camera folders or selected documents after setup | Any setup state | Not required for the local copy itself | Requires computer storage and manual handling of categories |
| Google Takeout to iCloud Photos | Large Google Photos libraries | Phones need not be together | Cloud accounts and service processing are required | Supported formats, account eligibility and iCloud capacity apply; RAW goes to iCloud Drive |
Troubleshoot the most common failure points
The transfer option is missing
Check whether the destination phone is still in its first-time setup. Move to iOS and Android’s copy assistant are setup workflows, not universal features inside an already configured phone. If setup is complete, use the computer, cloud or nearby-sharing route that matches the files.
The phones run out of space
Compare the source selection with free space on the destination phone or cloud account. Move only essential albums, copy older media to a computer first, or increase available cloud capacity before restarting. Do not erase the source until the destination has been checked.
A cable connects but nothing transfers
Confirm that the cable supports data and that both connectors fit the ports. A charge-only cable can power a phone without exposing its files. If the model combination does not support the wired setup path, follow the wireless instructions or use a computer.
Quick Share cannot find the iPhone
Verify that the iPhone is set to AirDrop’s Everyone for 10 Minutes, that the Android model supports AirDrop discovery, and that the phones are nearby. If the iPhone still does not appear, use the QR-code option and an internet connection.
Photos or documents appear to be missing
Check the source location. Camera media may be in Android’s DCIM folder, while documents may be in a cloud drive rather than local storage. In a Google-to-iCloud library transfer, unsupported items such as RAW files go to iCloud Drive instead of iCloud Photos. On Android, Google’s setup flow does not include iCloud Photos or files, so those require a separate export.
The cloud transfer is still processing
Apple says a Google Photos-to-iCloud transfer can take hours to days. Keep both accounts active, maintain sufficient iCloud storage and wait for processing to finish before judging the result. Because the Google originals are not deleted, you can retry or use another export without losing the source library.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Replacing Android with iPhone: start Move to iOS before completing iPhone setup; choose a direct USB-C data connection when supported and faster transfer is important.
- Replacing iPhone with Android: use the Android setup copy flow, then separately move files and iCloud Photos.
- Sending a few items Android to iPhone: try Quick Share with the iPhone set to Everyone for 10 Minutes; switch to the QR method if the model is not eligible.
- Moving photos after setup: use a computer for local folders or Google Takeout for a Google Photos library.
- Moving documents: identify whether they are local files or already stored in a cloud drive, then use the corresponding computer or cloud route.
- Before wiping either phone: open sample photos, videos, messages and documents on the destination and confirm that important albums and folders are present.
