The most reliable way to measure AI exposure is to build a look-through exposure sheet. Export every stock, ETF and mutual-fund holding with its portfolio weight, expand funds into their underlying issuers, consolidate duplicate companies, classify each issuer by AI-revenue band and value-chain role, then calculate each position’s contribution as portfolio weight multiplied by estimated AI exposure. Report direct AI producers, infrastructure enablers and AI adopters separately; a portfolio can look diversified by ticker while depending on the same chip, cloud or data-center spending cycle.
Why a ticker count does not reveal AI exposure
AI exposure is not a standardized accounting line. A company may sell models or AI software, supply the chips and networking equipment those systems require, provide cloud capacity, or simply use machine learning to improve an existing business. Fund labels can also conceal concentration: several apparently unrelated ETFs may hold the same semiconductor, cloud or networking issuers.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Consequently, “I own five funds” says little about how much of your capital depends on AI investment. The relevant unit is the underlying issuer and the portion of its business connected to AI. A look-through calculation answers three different questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- How much of the portfolio is economically tied to AI-related revenue?
- Which value-chain layers—semiconductors, networking, cloud and data centers, model platforms, applications or adopters—drive that exposure?
- Where do the same issuers or spending dependencies appear across accounts and funds?
Keep the measurement dated. Holdings can be stale between reporting dates, estimates change after earnings or acquisitions, and private-company exposure may be incomplete.

The four-part measurement framework
Use four complementary methods rather than one headline score. Each captures a different aspect of dependence.
| Method | What it measures | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look-through holdings and overlap | Underlying issuer weights after expanding funds and consolidating duplicates | Finding concentration hidden by multiple funds or accounts | Ownership alone does not show how much of an issuer’s business is AI-related |
| Revenue-based exposure | Disclosed or estimated share of company revenue tied to AI | Estimating economic sensitivity to AI demand | Companies disclose different definitions; enabling revenue may be estimated |
| Value-chain and activity layers | Position in semiconductors, networking, cloud/data centers, models, applications or adoption | Seeing whether risk is concentrated in one spending layer | A layer label does not quantify revenue by itself |
| Operating evidence for adopters | Changes in productivity, margins, labor costs, headcount and sales efficiency | Testing whether AI use is affecting an established company | Improvement cannot automatically be attributed to AI |
Step 1: Create a complete holdings inventory
Start with every taxable, retirement and cash-management account. Record the security identifier, market value, account weight, fund weight (if applicable), number of shares, currency, account name and the holdings-report date. Use the latest portfolio file or regulatory report available for each fund, and record the date beside every row.
Your initial sheet should have one row per position held directly or through a fund. Keep the original ticker and fund name for auditability, but assign a stable issuer name or legal entity identifier so that share classes and ticker changes can be consolidated later.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Include ETFs, mutual funds, closed-end funds and separately managed portfolios.
- Record cash, derivatives and short positions separately; do not force them into an AI category.
- Note whether a fund report is daily, monthly, quarterly or otherwise dated.
- Mark positions in private companies or venture funds as incomplete look-through exposure unless underlying data is available.
Step 2: Expand every fund to its underlying issuers
Download the most recent holdings file for each fund from its provider or a regulatory filing. Multiply your portfolio weight in the fund by each underlying holding’s fund weight. For example, a 6% portfolio position in a fund whose issuer weight is 4% contributes 0.24% of your total portfolio to that issuer before any AI-revenue adjustment.
Repeat the calculation for every fund and account. If a fund publishes only its largest holdings, label the remainder as undisclosed rather than assuming it is diversified or AI-free. A partial file can support a partial estimate, but it cannot support a precise total.
- Enter the fund’s weight in your portfolio.
- Enter each issuer’s weight inside the fund from the same report date.
- Calculate look-through portfolio weight as
portfolio fund weight × fund issuer weight. - Retain the source date and file name in adjacent columns.
Look-through analysis is important because shared holdings can be substantial. A 2025 European Securities and Markets Authority study analyzed holdings data for 10,370 EU equity funds from January 2021 through June 2024 and found 83 AI companies that appeared in at least two of seven major AI indices. More than 50% of EU fund market value was concentrated in the largest AI-linked companies as of June 2024. Those figures describe the EU fund market, not your portfolio, but they demonstrate why fund-count diversification can be misleading.
Step 3: Consolidate duplicate issuers
After expanding funds, sort by the legal issuer rather than the ticker. Add direct holdings and every fund-derived holding for the same company. Consolidate ordinary and preferred share classes only when they represent the same economic issuer and your data source treats them consistently.
| Column | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Issuer ID | Stable company identifier used for aggregation |
| Original security | Ticker, share class and fund source for audit trail |
| Look-through weight | Portfolio percentage attributable to the issuer |
| Report date | Freshness of the underlying holding |
| Account and fund | Where the exposure originates |
Calculate a separate total for each account before combining the household portfolio. This reveals whether an apparent household concentration is confined to one account and makes rebalancing practical.

Step 4: Assign an AI-revenue band with evidence
Use revenue exposure, not a fund’s marketing label, as the primary economic measure. For each issuer, record the percentage or band, the period measured, whether the figure is disclosed or estimated, and the evidence source.
| AI-revenue band | Interpretation | How to record it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 50% | AI-related activities represent a majority of reported or carefully estimated revenue | Enter the percentage if disclosed; otherwise record “>50%” and explain the estimate |
| 20–50% | Material but not majority exposure | Record the range, source period and whether revenue is direct or enabling |
| Less than 20% | Limited measured revenue exposure, although strategic or future exposure may be higher | Use the disclosed estimate or mark the band as analyst-estimated |
The Bloomberg AI methodology described in a 2026 U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing uses these three bands. A separate BITA methodology described in a 2025 SEC filing uses filings, earnings reports, investor presentations, official conference-call transcripts and credible news. Its screen includes companies with at least 50% thematic exposure or the largest thematic revenue-dollar amounts, subject to market-cap and liquidity requirements. The 50% threshold is an inclusion route, not a claim that every selected company receives exactly 50% exposure.
Do not mix a disclosed AI-revenue percentage with an unqualified thematic label. Store the source period and confidence level beside every estimate:
- High confidence: management reports a defined AI revenue figure in a filing or earnings release.
- Medium confidence: revenue is disclosed for a segment whose AI content can be reasonably isolated.
- Low confidence: the estimate relies mainly on analyst judgment, product descriptions or an enabling relationship.
Step 5: Map each issuer to the AI value chain
Assign one primary layer and, where necessary, a secondary layer. A company can be both an infrastructure supplier and an adopter; record both rather than forcing a single label.
| Layer | Typical economic activity | Concentration question |
|---|---|---|
| Semiconductors | Processors, memory, manufacturing equipment and packaging | Would a slowdown in accelerator or server demand affect several holdings at once? |
| Networking | High-speed switches, interconnects and optical equipment | Are multiple funds financing the same data-center build-out? |
| Cloud and data centers | Compute rental, storage, colocation and power infrastructure | Does the portfolio depend on capital expenditure and utilization growth? |
| Model platforms | Foundation models, training and inference services | Is revenue recurring, usage-based or still investment-led? |
| Application software | AI features embedded in productivity, security, design or industry tools | Are customers paying for new functionality or receiving it in existing subscriptions? |
| AI-enabled adopters | Businesses using AI to improve operations, service or sales | Are productivity gains visible in financial metrics? |
MSCI’s AI Value Chain Indexes match segment revenue to AI value-chain components, while its AI Exposure Intelligence combines rules-based signals for competitive position, AI activity and AI-related revenue. These frameworks are useful benchmarks for your layer taxonomy, but their universes and rules may differ from your holdings. Compare classifications; do not average incompatible scores.
Step 6: Separate producers, enablers and adopters
Use three activity labels in addition to the value-chain layer.
- Direct producers: companies whose products are AI models, software or services.
- Infrastructure enablers: suppliers of chips, networking, cloud capacity, data centers, power or other inputs required to run AI.
- Adopters: companies applying AI inside another business rather than selling AI as the main product.
This split prevents a portfolio from appearing balanced when most of its exposure is actually an infrastructure bet. An adopter may benefit from efficiency without receiving a large share of AI revenue, while an enabler can have high sensitivity to AI capital spending even if its products serve other workloads.
Step 7: Calculate contribution, totals and overlap
For each issuer, calculate:
AI contribution = consolidated portfolio weight × AI-exposure estimate

If your evidence is a band, calculate a range rather than inventing a midpoint. For a 3% issuer position in the 20–50% band, the contribution is 0.6–1.5 percentage points. Sum contributions by issuer, account, activity label and value-chain layer.
| Illustrative issuer | Consolidated portfolio weight | AI band | AI contribution range | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Issuer A | 3.0% | 20–50% | 0.6–1.5% | Infrastructure enabler |
| Issuer B | 1.5% | >50% | >0.75% | Direct producer |
| Issuer C | 4.0% | <20% | 0–0.8% | Adopter |
The figures above are a calculation example, not company measurements. In your sheet, preserve lower and upper bounds and add a confidence flag. A simple total can therefore be reported as a range, such as “estimated AI-linked contribution: 12–19%,” with the assumptions visible.
Also calculate gross shared exposure. If three funds each hold the same issuer, the issuer’s consolidated weight is the relevant concentration number; counting each fund separately understates it. Add a dependency flag when several issuers rely on the same semiconductor, cloud, networking or data-center spending cycle, even if they are different legal companies.

How to assess AI adopters without overclaiming
For adopters, revenue share alone may understate the economic effect. Track operating evidence over several reporting periods:
- Revenue per employee
- Gross and operating margins
- Headcount growth or decline
- Labor and service-delivery costs
- Customer-service efficiency and unit economics
- Sales productivity, conversion and retention
UBS chief investment office head Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, quoted by Kiplinger, states: “For a positive AI impact, revenue per employee should increase over time.” Treat that as a monitoring indicator, not proof of causation. A margin improvement may result from pricing, restructuring, currency or demand rather than AI. Record management’s stated AI contribution, the metric’s period and alternative explanations.
Compare your worksheet with published taxonomies
Use at least one external methodology as a reasonableness check. Compare along five axes:
| Axis | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Transparency | Can you trace the classification to a filing, earnings statement or named methodology? |
| Revenue specificity | Is it a disclosed AI share, a defined band or only a thematic classification? |
| Coverage | Does it include producers, enablers and adopters across sectors? |
| Overlap handling | Does it look through funds and aggregate accounts, or only rank tickers? |
| Timeliness and cost | How quickly do holdings and company events update, and is the data free, retail, adviser or institutional? |
Explain differences instead of averaging scores. One index may use a 50% revenue threshold, another may include the largest AI revenue dollars, and a third may use activity or competitive-position signals. Different answers can all be internally consistent.

- Quarterly or annual earnings that change segment revenue
- New filings or investor presentations defining AI sales
- Acquisitions, divestitures or major product launches
- Large capital-expenditure changes in cloud or data-center businesses
- Disclosures about model usage, pricing or customer adoption
Keep the prior estimate instead of overwriting it. A dated history shows whether exposure rose because you bought more shares, because a fund changed its holdings, or because the issuer’s AI revenue grew.
Common errors and how to correct them
Counting funds instead of issuers
Symptom: several funds appear diversified, but the same companies recur in their top holdings. Fix: expand each fund and aggregate by issuer.
Treating a thematic label as a revenue percentage
Symptom: an “AI” fund is counted as 100% AI. Fix: use underlying issuer bands and retain the fund’s methodology only as a separate classification.
Mixing dates
Symptom: a current account value is combined with holdings from different quarters without disclosure. Fix: date every row and state that the result is an estimate based on asynchronous reports.
Ignoring enabling businesses
Symptom: only model vendors are counted. Fix: map semiconductors, networking, cloud and data-center issuers and flag shared spending dependencies.
Assigning all adopter gains to AI
Symptom: every productivity improvement is labeled an AI return. Fix: track operating indicators and management evidence while listing other plausible causes.
Using false precision
Symptom: an estimated 20–50% band becomes an exact 35%. Fix: carry the range through the portfolio total and show confidence and source period.

Set a limit that fits your overall risk plan
No cited methodology establishes a universally safe AI-exposure percentage. Set a limit in the context of your time horizon, ability to tolerate drawdowns, income needs and existing sector or factor concentrations. Decide whether the limit applies to:
Best Value
- Direct AI producers only
- Producers plus infrastructure enablers
- All estimated AI-linked revenue, including adopters
- Gross dependency on a shared AI capital-spending cycle
Document the definition before making a trade. Otherwise, a changing taxonomy can make the limit appear satisfied without reducing economic risk. Review the calculation against current filings and holdings before acting.
A spreadsheet layout you can maintain
Use one raw-data tab, one issuer master and one dashboard.
- Raw holdings: account, security, fund, report date, shares, market value and source file.
- Look-through: fund weight, underlying issuer, calculated portfolio weight and report date.
- Issuer master: issuer ID, AI-revenue band, direct/enabler/adopter role, value-chain layer, confidence, evidence period and notes.
- Calculations: lower and upper AI contribution, account totals, layer totals and duplicate-issuer flags.
- Dashboard: total range, largest issuers, largest layers, stale rows and changes since the previous refresh.
Keep a notes field for why an estimate changed. That audit trail is more useful than a single score because it distinguishes new evidence from a reclassification.

A useful report states the dated portfolio weight, the estimated AI-linked range, the confidence level, the largest underlying issuers, the value-chain distribution and the accounts or funds creating overlap. It also identifies what is not measured: stale holdings, undisclosed fund positions, private-company exposure and revenue estimates based on enabling roles.
The result is not a prediction of AI returns. It is a transparent map of how much of your capital may respond to AI revenue, infrastructure demand and adoption outcomes, with assumptions that can be updated as disclosures change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I measure AI exposure using only the names of my ETFs?
No. ETF names are a starting clue, not an exposure percentage. Expand each fund into its dated holdings, aggregate duplicate issuers and classify their AI-related revenue and value-chain roles.
Should infrastructure suppliers count as AI exposure?
Yes, but report them separately from direct producers. Chips, networking, cloud and data-center companies can depend heavily on AI capital spending even when AI is not their only business.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if a company does not disclose AI revenue?
Use a clearly marked estimate or band, record the evidence date and assign a lower confidence level. Carry the uncertainty through the portfolio total instead of creating an exact percentage.
How often should the calculation be updated?
Update the holdings layer whenever new fund reports arrive and revisit classifications after material earnings, filings, acquisitions, capital-expenditure changes or product disclosures.
