Best ways to set a phone curfew without buying a smartwatch

You can set a reliable phone curfew with controls already built into most current phones. Use Screen Time Downtime on an iPhone, Family Link or supported Android parental controls for a child’s Android device, and Digital Wellbeing Bedtime mode when an adult mainly needs fewer nighttime interruptions. For a stronger boundary, combine the schedule with a household cutoff and charge the phone outside the bedroom. If the phone is your alarm, a basic digital alarm clock removes the biggest reason to keep it beside the bed.

Choose the control that matches the situation

A curfew can mean two different things: stopping access to apps and the device, or simply making the phone quiet and less visually tempting. Pick the option according to who owns the phone and how strict the boundary must be.

Situation Best-fit setting What it does Who configures it
Parent setting a child’s iPhone or iPad schedule Screen Time Downtime Blocks apps and notifications during scheduled periods while calls and selected apps can remain available The parent through Family Sharing and Screen Time, or on the device
Parent managing a child or teen Android device Google Family Link Provides daily limits, scheduled Downtime and School Time, plus app-specific limits or blocks The parent account supervising the device
Android device with supported built-in parental controls On-device Android Parental Controls Can provide scheduled downtime and app limits Configured on the phone, subject to Android version and device support
Adult managing their own Android phone Digital Wellbeing Bedtime mode Schedules a darker, quieter experience with options such as Do Not Disturb and grayscale; it is not necessarily a lockout The phone owner

There is no evidence that one setting works best for every family. The meaningful differences are whether access is blocked or merely quieted, whether a parent controls the schedule, what the phone and account support, and which calls or apps remain available.

Set a curfew on an iPhone with Screen Time Downtime

What Downtime does

Apple’s Screen Time feature lets you schedule a period when most apps and notifications are blocked. Calls and apps you deliberately allow can still work, so you can preserve an emergency contact method or a small set of essential tools. A Screen Time passcode helps prevent the schedule from being changed casually. Apple’s current instructions are published in Use Screen Time to manage your child’s iPhone or iPad.

Amazon Basics Small Digital Oval Alarm Clock with LED Display, Nightlight, Snooze Function & Battery Backup, Black, 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 Inches
  • Digital alarm clock with a 0.7-inch green LED display for easily checking the time at a glance
  • Built-in nightlight gently illuminates a dark room
  • Repeating snooze function makes it possible to sleep a little longer
  • AC powered with integrated power supply. Batteries may be used as a backup power source to ensure time and alarms are retained in memory for 8 hours (refer to User Manual for details)
  • Measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 inches (LxWxH); weighs 0.4 pounds (6.6 oz) Note: Batteries are not included

Parent-managed setup

  1. Make sure the child’s iPhone or iPad is connected to the family setup you use for Screen Time. Apple documents management through Family Sharing; the exact labels can vary with the installed iOS or iPadOS version.
  2. Open the child’s Screen Time settings and choose Downtime. Set the start and end times to cover the intended sleep period, including weekends if the same boundary applies every night.
  3. Review the apps and contacts that are allowed during Downtime. Keep only what the child genuinely needs at night; leaving every entertainment app available defeats the purpose of the schedule.
  4. Create or confirm a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know. Store it where the supervising adult can retrieve it, because forgetting the passcode can make schedule changes difficult.
  5. Test the schedule before relying on it. Check that a blocked app is unavailable during the test period and that the calls or selected apps you kept available still work.

Self-managed setup

An adult can use the same Downtime controls on their own iPhone. Set a realistic start time rather than one that begins before necessary evening tasks are finished. If you need navigation, two-factor authentication, an accessibility tool or an emergency contact, add only those items to the allowed list. Verify the labels on your current iOS release because Apple changes menu layouts and family-account details over time.

When Downtime is too permissive

Downtime is a scheduled restriction, not a guarantee that a person will never reach the device. A passcode, a short allowed-app list and a physical charging location outside the bedroom make the software boundary harder to bypass. If the user needs the phone nearby for an urgent call, keep the phone accessible but remove discretionary apps from the allowed list.

Use Google Family Link for a supervised Android phone

Why Family Link fits a child or teen device

Google Family Link is designed for a parent supervising a child or teen account. Its documented controls include daily time limits, scheduled Downtime and School Time, and limits or blocks for individual apps. Start with Google’s current feature and account guidance at Family Link from Google – Family Safety & Parental Control Tools.

  • Sleek, User-Friendly Design:Designed with simplicity in mind: a single top button controls brightness, while the clean, modern look complements any decor—from minimalist living rooms to industrial-style home gyms. Its intuitive interface works for all ages.

Set the schedule

  1. Open Family Link with the supervising parent account and select the child’s profile. Confirm that the correct Android phone is listed; a schedule applied to another device will not solve the intended problem.
  2. Open the controls for daily device time and choose the Downtime schedule. Set a nightly start and end time, then add a separate weekend schedule if weekdays and weekends need different boundaries.
  3. Use School Time when the goal is to restrict distracting apps during school hours rather than overnight. Keep the school schedule separate from the bedtime schedule so each has a clear purpose.
  4. Set app-specific limits or blocks for services that cause repeated late-night use. A device-wide schedule and an app limit solve different problems: the first defines when the phone is available, while the second limits a particular app across the day.
  5. Tell the child which calls or approved communication methods remain available, then test the phone during a short trial window. Family Link features depend on the account and device configuration, so confirm the result on the actual supervised phone.

Account and device qualifications

Family Link is not a universal switch for every Android phone. Supervision, the child’s account arrangement and the phone’s software affect which controls appear. If a setting is missing, update the relevant Google apps where appropriate, confirm that the account is supervised, and check Google’s current support information rather than assuming the same menu exists on every model.

Check Android’s built-in Parental Controls

Some Android phones provide on-device Parental Controls with scheduled downtime and app limits. Eligibility depends on Android updates and supported devices. Google’s June 16, 2026 announcement says the expanded controls are rolling out to Android devices updating to Android 17; that does not mean every Android phone has them today. Read the details in Google’s announcement about expanded Android parental controls.

  1. Open Settings and search for “Parental controls.” On some phones the entry is under Digital Wellbeing or a similarly named family-safety section.
  2. If the option is present, review the eligibility or update message before creating a schedule. Record the Android version and device model if you need to check the manufacturer’s support page.
  3. Create the downtime window and choose app limits where offered. Keep the schedule long enough to cover the full sleep period, not just the moment the user intends to stop scrolling.
  4. Protect the settings with the available parent authentication or control method. Without that protection, the phone owner may be able to remove the boundary.
  5. Run a test at the scheduled time and confirm which apps, calls and notifications remain usable. Android manufacturers can implement controls differently, so do not infer behavior from another phone.

Use Bedtime mode when you need a quieter Android phone, not a lock

What Bedtime mode changes

Google describes Digital Wellbeing Bedtime mode as a scheduled way to keep the phone dark and quiet. Depending on the device, it can turn on Do Not Disturb and grayscale, reducing notification noise and the visual pull of a colorful screen. Google’s explanation is at Bedtime tools to help improve your sleep.

Configure it

  1. Open Settings and go to Digital Wellbeing, then select Bedtime mode or the equivalent bedtime setting shown on your Android version.
  2. Choose the days and start and end times. Schedule the mode for the period when interruptions should stop, rather than only the time you expect to be asleep.
  3. Turn on Do Not Disturb and grayscale if those options help. Review exceptions so genuinely urgent contacts can still reach you according to your own safety needs.
  4. Use the phone for a few nights and note whether you still open unrestricted apps. If you can continue browsing normally, Bedtime mode is doing what it was designed to do—quieting the phone—not enforcing a lockout.

For a stricter Android curfew, use Family Link or supported on-device parental controls instead of describing Bedtime mode as a device lock. An adult who can change their own settings can also override the schedule, so environmental changes matter.

Build a no-purchase routine around the schedule

Agree on the cutoff before turning on a timer

A curfew works better when everyone knows what it means. Decide whether the cutoff covers all screen use, entertainment apps only, or only notifications. Set separate rules for school nights, weekends and travel if those situations genuinely differ. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a family media plan that fits the family’s routines and is revisited as children mature. Its HealthyChildren.org guidance says to set screen-free zones such as the dinner table, homework time and before bed. Read How to Make a Family Media Plan.

Move charging out of the bedroom

Use one shared charging location in a hallway, kitchen or another place outside sleeping areas. This costs nothing and removes the easiest path to late-night checking. The AAP policy statement on media use recommends avoiding screens for an hour before bedtime and not sleeping with devices in bedrooms. Those are recommendations for healthier routines, not proof that a particular timer will improve sleep for every person. The policy statement is available at Media Use in School-Aged Children and Adolescents.

Use a short wind-down sequence

  • End discretionary phone use at the agreed time.
  • Plug every household phone into the shared charging spot.
  • Switch to a non-screen activity such as reading, preparing clothing or personal hygiene.
  • Keep the same order on ordinary nights so the routine does not depend on willpower.
  • Review the arrangement after a week and adjust the start time if it regularly conflicts with necessary tasks.

If the phone is also the alarm

Best option: separate the alarm from the phone

Keeping a phone beside the bed creates a practical exception to an outside-the-bedroom rule. The AAP’s teen sleep guidance suggests trying a separate alarm clock when the phone is being used as an alarm. A basic digital alarm clock is therefore the relevant optional purchase; no particular model is required. See How to Help Your Teen Succeed in School: Sleep, Study Habits & More.

Fallback when the phone must stay in the room

Place the phone across the room, enable Do Not Disturb during the sleep period, and keep it out of reach from the bed. This does not create the same physical separation as charging elsewhere, but it reduces the chance that a notification wakes the user. The AAP teen guidance specifically suggests Do Not Disturb at night when a phone remains in the bedroom.

Set age-appropriate expectations

Sleep needs vary by age, so a curfew should protect enough time for sleep rather than impose an arbitrary clock time. The AAP’s 2016 policy statement gives a recommended 8–12 hours depending on the child’s age, while its teen guidance gives 8–10 hours for teens. These are recommendations, not measurements of what a phone setting will achieve. Work backward from the required wake-up time and allow time to fall asleep, then place the phone cutoff at least an hour before bed when that is practical.

Troubleshoot common curfew failures

“The schedule is on, but the child can still use everything.”

  • On iPhone, review the Downtime allowed-app and contact list; blocked apps may be available because they were deliberately permitted.
  • Check that the schedule is assigned to the correct child account and device.
  • Confirm that the Screen Time passcode or parent authentication is active.
  • On Android, verify whether you enabled Bedtime mode rather than a parental-control downtime schedule. Bedtime mode quiets the phone but does not necessarily block access.

“The Android option is missing.”

  • Check the phone’s Android version and manufacturer support information.
  • Confirm whether the device is supervised in Family Link if a parent is trying to manage a child’s phone.
  • Look for the on-device Parental Controls entry under Settings or Digital Wellbeing; availability varies by supported device and update status.
  • Do not assume the Android 17 expansion described in Google’s June 16, 2026 announcement is already present on every phone.

“The phone must stay available for emergencies.”

Keep essential calls or contacts available in iPhone Downtime, review Do Not Disturb exceptions on Android, and explain the emergency rule to everyone using the device. A curfew should reduce routine use without preventing the communication method your household has decided is necessary.

“The user keeps overriding the rule.”

Use a parent-held passcode where the platform supports one, remove entertainment apps from the allowed list, and move charging outside the bedroom. For an adult managing their own phone, combine the software schedule with the physical charging rule; no setting can enforce a boundary that the owner can freely disable.

A practical rollout plan

  1. Define the goal. Decide whether you need a true access block, quieter notifications, or simply a phone-free bedroom.
  2. Select the platform control. Choose Screen Time Downtime for an iPhone, Family Link or supported Android Parental Controls for a supervised Android device, and Bedtime mode for a self-managed Android phone that needs fewer interruptions.
  3. Set the schedule. Cover the complete intended sleep period and create separate weekday and weekend rules only when needed.
  4. Protect the settings. Use a Screen Time passcode or parent authentication where available; otherwise rely on a shared household agreement and physical separation.
  5. Preserve essentials. Keep only necessary calls, contacts or apps available during downtime, and test them before the first night.
  6. Remove the alarm objection. Charge outside the bedroom and use a separate digital alarm clock, or place the phone across the room with Do Not Disturb as a fallback.
  7. Review after one week. Adjust timing for real bedtime, school or work demands instead of abandoning the boundary after one inconvenient night.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Built-in schedules can establish a technical boundary, but the cited guidance does not provide a controlled estimate of how much any specific setting improves sleep. The AAP recommendations support screen-free periods, device-free bedrooms and adequate sleep duration; they do not prove that one app limit or downtime schedule will work equally well for every family. Treat the settings as tools within a routine, then adjust them to the person’s age, responsibilities and ability to follow the agreement.
