Remove the odor source first, clean the material that holds it, and ventilate safely. Use activated-carbon air cleaning only for residual gases after those steps. Cooking smells usually come from grease, moisture and airborne compounds around the range; pet odors come from urine, feces or vomit left on a surface; sewage odor indicates contaminated water or materials and may require controlled remediation. Fragrance sprays and ozone generators can hide or worsen the problem without removing what caused it.
Start with source control, not fragrance
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s indoor-air guidance ranks source control as the most effective approach, followed by ventilation, with filtration or air cleaning as a supplement. That order matters because an air cleaner treats what is already airborne; it does not remove grease on a cabinet, urine in carpet backing or sewage in porous drywall. If the source remains wet or contaminated, the smell will return when the room warms up or air moves across it.

Use this sequence for any odor:
- Stop or contain the source. Turn off the process creating the odor, stop a leak or keep people and pets out of a contaminated area.
- Remove soil from the affected material. Blot liquids, pick up solids, extract or wash surfaces, and discard materials that cannot be safely cleaned.
- Apply a product labeled for that surface and odor. Follow its dilution, contact-time and rinsing instructions exactly.
- Ventilate when outdoor conditions are safe. Exhaust to the outdoors or create cross-ventilation rather than merely moving contaminated air to another room.
- Filter residual gases if needed. Choose an air cleaner with substantial activated carbon and an appropriately sized particle CADR.
Food odors, pet-waste odors and sewage odors are not interchangeable. The table shows the correct first response before the detailed procedures.

How to remove cooking smells from a house
Capture odor and moisture at the range
Turn on an outdoor-vented range hood before or as cooking starts. Keep it running afterward until steam and odor have cleared. EPA guidance explains that cooking generates moisture and odors and recommends capturing combustion products and exhausting them directly outdoors. A typical range ventilation recommendation cited by EPA from ASHRAE and the Home Ventilation Institute is 100 cubic feet per minute (cfm), although the correct capacity depends on the appliance and installation.

An exhaust fan that vents outdoors removes contaminated air from the building. A recirculating hood can still collect some grease with its filter, but it does not provide the same direct outdoor exhaust described by EPA. Make sure the hood actually discharges outdoors and that its filter and duct are not blocked.
Clean the grease film that keeps releasing odor
Odor often remains because a thin oil film has settled beyond the cooktop. Work from the range outward:
- Switch off the appliance and let hot surfaces cool.
- Remove and clean the hood’s grease filter according to its instructions. Replace a disposable filter when it is saturated.
- Wipe the backsplash, underside of cabinets, cabinet faces, nearby walls and the floor around the range.
- Use only a cleaner labeled for each material. Painted surfaces, natural stone, finished wood and unsealed grout can react differently to alkaline or solvent-based degreasers.
- Rinse or wipe away cleaner residue when the label requires it, then dry the surfaces.
Do not combine degreaser with bleach, ammonia or another cleaning product. Read the label for the correct dilution and contact time; stronger is not automatically safer or more effective.
Ventilate without bringing in another hazard
If outdoor air quality, temperature and weather permit, open windows or doors on opposite sides of the home to create cross-ventilation. EPA recommends outdoor-air ventilation when it is safe and appropriate. Close openings if smoke, high outdoor pollution, extreme weather or security concerns make ventilation unsafe.
Use carbon filtration only for the residue
A portable cleaner containing activated carbon can reduce gaseous cooking odors that remain after the grease has been removed and the room ventilated. It cannot clean a greasy hood, cabinet or fabric. Run it in the cooking area with doors to unaffected rooms closed when practical, and follow the manufacturer’s filter-replacement schedule. Carbon becomes less useful as it fills with adsorbed compounds, so a unit with a small carbon sheet may have a short useful life for heavy cooking.

How to remove dog or cat urine, feces and vomit smells
Remove the material before deodorizing
Pick up feces and vomit promptly and blot urine rather than scrubbing it deeper into carpet or upholstery. Wash the affected area before applying a deodorizer. An EPA-registered deodorizer label advises cleaning pet-odor areas first, testing an inconspicuous spot for colorfastness, observing the stated contact time, blotting and allowing the area to dry.
For washable bedding, covers and clothing, remove solids, rinse according to the care label and launder. Keep contaminated laundry separate until it is washed. Do not put a heavily soiled item in a dryer until the odor and stain are gone; heat can make some residues harder to remove.

Match the cleaner to the surface
Hard, sealed flooring can usually be cleaned with a product labeled for that finish. Avoid flooding wood, laminate seams or electronics. For carpet, upholstery, mattresses and other porous items, choose an enzymatic pet-odor cleaner whose label specifically covers the material. Extension guidance identifies enzymatic treatment as a practical option when cat odor has penetrated porous surfaces because the formulation is intended to break down odor-causing organic residues rather than cover them with perfume.
- Check the product label for the exact surface and odor claim.
- Test a hidden area for color change or damage and let it dry before judging the result.
- Apply enough product to reach the contaminated layer, but do not oversaturate a backing, cushion or subfloor that cannot dry safely.
- Keep the area wet for the label’s required contact time. Removing the product too soon can leave residue untreated.
- Blot or extract as directed, then provide airflow and let the material dry completely.
Repeatedly spraying fragrance over urine does not remove salts that can recrystallize and smell again in humid conditions. If urine has soaked through carpet into padding or subfloor, surface spraying alone may not reach the source.
Use airflow and sunlight cautiously
Sunlight and fresh air can help washable items when the material, weather and security conditions allow. They are supporting measures, not substitutes for removing the soil and using a compatible cleaner. Keep treated items away from children and pets until they are dry and the label permits normal use.

Know when disposal is the sensible option
A porous item saturated for a long period may continue to release odor after several correctly performed treatments. Extension guidance notes that disposal can be more practical than endless masking attempts. Before discarding, check whether the item can be professionally cleaned and whether the contaminated padding or backing can be replaced; do not keep an irreversibly contaminated item simply because the surface looks clean.

Why ozone generators are a poor choice
Do not use an ozone generator as a pet-odor solution. Extension guidance reports that EPA and Extension programs warn ozone can damage materials and is not effective on uric-acid-based odors. Ozone also introduces an inhalation hazard; source removal and labeled cleaning are safer controls.
How to get rid of sewage smell safely
Treat the odor as a contamination warning
Sewage odor usually means contaminated water, solids or vapor are present. Stop the backup or leak if you can do so safely, keep people and pets out of the area, and avoid tracking contamination through the house. Sewage-related conditions can be associated with temporary headache, nausea and eye, nose or throat irritation, so leave the area if occupants feel unwell.
Stop the source before cleaning
Shut off or isolate the overflowing fixture, contact a plumber for a blocked drain or failed sewer connection, and address any failed sump or backflow device. Do not restart a system that is still discharging. If sewage has reached electrical outlets, appliances, HVAC equipment or concealed cavities, keep clear and arrange professional assessment rather than probing or powering equipment.
Remove contaminated materials and follow the label
Porous materials that absorbed sewage may need to be removed instead of deodorized. Carpet pad, upholstered furnishings, insulation, unfinished drywall and similar items can retain contamination where household wiping cannot reach. Hard surfaces may be cleaned or extracted according to the material and the remediation plan.

EPA label directions for the registered product Lonzagard RCS-256 Plus give examples of dilution and contact time: 2–3 fluid ounces per gallon for pet odors and 1–2 fluid ounces per gallon for sewage backup or water damage, with a 10-minute contact time for the cited 2024 label directions. Those figures apply only to that product’s label and situation; another cleaner may require different dilution, application and personal-protection steps. Never substitute a stronger mixture or shorten the contact time.
Ventilate only when it is safe
Open windows or use exhaust fans when outdoor conditions permit and when doing so will not spread contamination to clean areas. The EPA label cited above requires proper ventilation, and CDC cleaning guidance advises using a fan or opening windows and doors to bring in fresh air when products are used indoors. Keep contaminated air from being drawn through the home’s HVAC system; if ducts or air handlers were exposed, obtain professional guidance.
Escalate extensive or hidden contamination
Use a qualified water-damage or sewage-remediation provider when the backup is extensive, moisture is hidden, contamination has entered HVAC components, structural materials remain wet, or you cannot safely remove and clean the affected materials. This is a scope-and-safety decision, not a claim that every odor requires a service. Ask what materials will be removed, how moisture will be verified, how waste will be handled and what ventilation controls will be used.

It can reduce some airborne gases, but only the right filter and only as a supplement. EPA identifies activated carbon as the relevant medium for gases. A portable cleaner with activated carbon can filter gases; a high-clean-air-delivery-rate (CADR) unit with carbon can address particles and gases. CADR itself is a particle rating, and there is no widely used, authoritative rating system that lets you compare gas-removal performance directly.

- Activated carbon or gas-removal filter: The specification should clearly state that carbon is present, not merely that the unit has a particle filter.
- Substantial carbon mass: EPA notes that activated carbon can be effective when a large amount of material is used. A thin impregnated sheet generally holds less gas than a deeper carbon bed.
- Room-appropriate particle CADR: Use CADR to judge particle turnover, not as a promise of odor removal.
- Replacement availability and cost: Carbon fills as it adsorbs compounds. A low-priced machine can become expensive if replacement cartridges are scarce or frequent.
- Noise and run-time controls: Higher fan speeds and longer operation increase the amount of air filtered, but noise may affect whether the unit can run continuously.
Place the cleaner near the cleaned source, leave airflow around its intake and outlet, and replace filters according to the manufacturer’s condition indicator or schedule. Do not use filtration to justify leaving a leak, grease deposit or contaminated material in place.

Cleaning and ventilation safety rules
- Never mix cleaning products. Combining bleach with acids, ammonia or other chemicals can create dangerous gases. Use one product at a time and rinse as the label directs before changing products.
- Follow dilution and contact time. More concentrate can damage finishes and increase exposure without improving odor removal.
- Provide fresh air. CDC guidance recommends a fan or open windows and doors when products are used indoors, provided outdoor conditions are safe.
- Protect people and animals. Keep products away from children and pets, wear the personal protective equipment specified on the label, and keep treated areas closed until safe.
- Never disinfect an animal with household disinfectant. CDC specifically says not to wipe or bathe pets with disinfection products.
- Do not spread contamination. Use separate tools for dirty and clean areas, bag disposable materials as directed and wash hands after handling waste.
Troubleshooting when the smell returns
The room smells again after cooking
Inspect the hood filter, the underside of cabinets, backsplash, wall paint and nearby fabrics for an oily film. Confirm that the hood exhausts outdoors and is running during and after cooking. If the odor is strongest when the range is off, look for grease above the hood, in ductwork access points or on washable textiles.
Pet odor remains after an enzymatic cleaner
Use a moisture-sensitive inspection or careful visual check to locate adjacent spots, then determine whether urine reached padding, subfloor or furniture framing. Verify that the product was labeled for the material, that the area stayed wet for the required contact time and that it dried fully. Do not layer a disinfectant, fragrance and enzyme product without label instructions.
Sewage odor remains after the visible water is gone
Look for hidden moisture behind baseboards, under flooring, inside wall cavities, beneath appliances or in an HVAC drain pan. A dry-looking surface can still hold contaminated material. Stop using the room if irritation continues and obtain a remediation assessment when the source cannot be located or safely removed.
An air cleaner seems ineffective
Check whether it contains real activated carbon, whether the carbon is already saturated and whether the unit is sized for the room. Run it longer or at a higher speed after source cleaning, but do not expect it to remove odor embedded in a surface. Replace the carbon filter when required; washing a disposable carbon filter can destroy its intended performance.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Can you identify and stop the source?
- Is the odor on a washable hard surface, a porous item or in contaminated water?
- Does the cleaner’s label cover that material and give a contact time?
- Can the area be ventilated without bringing in unsafe outdoor air or spreading contamination?
- Will the material dry completely, or should it be removed?
- Would hidden moisture, HVAC exposure or the contamination’s size justify qualified remediation?
- After cleaning, would activated carbon provide useful supplemental gas filtration, and can you afford replacement media?
