To reduce reflections on a phone screen, first raise brightness or enable adaptive brightness if the display looks washed out in daylight. If you can still see a sharp reflection of your surroundings, a compatible matte anti-glare protector may help by scattering that reflected light. Settings make the screen’s own light brighter; they do not remove the reflection.
First identify what is making the screen hard to see
There are two different problems that can occur together: the display may be too dim for the surrounding light, or the glass may show a sharp reflection of a window, lamp or the sky. Brightness controls address the first. A surface that diffuses reflected light addresses the second. If both are happening, try the reversible setting first, then consider a protector if the reflection remains distracting.

Try brightness settings when the image looks dim
Start with the phone’s brightness control, then try adaptive brightness if available. Adaptive brightness adjusts the screen in response to surrounding light; it can be useful when moving between indoor and outdoor environments, though behavior and menu labels vary by model.
Some phones offer an additional high-brightness option. Google says Pixel 4 and later may temporarily exceed normal maximum brightness in extremely bright ambient light, such as direct sunlight. Motorola documents an Extra brightness option on the moto g35 5G. These are device-specific features, not settings available on every handset. Motorola warns that Extra brightness uses a lot of battery and may cause eye strain in darker surroundings, so turn it off when you no longer need it.

Apple also notes that an iPhone display may dim if the device gets too warm, with maximum brightness reduced until it cools. If the brightness control does not keep the screen bright outdoors, heat may be one reason; increasing the setting cannot guarantee sustained maximum output.
Use a matte protector for a sharp reflected image
A matte anti-glare surface does not make reflected light disappear. It diffuses a concentrated, mirror-like reflection across more directions, which can make that reflection less distinct. 3M’s anti-glare technical sheet describes this diffusion, while its Display Optics 101 glossary distinguishes anti-glare scattering from anti-reflection approaches that reduce reflection intensity through optical layers or destructive interference.

Those documents explain optical mechanisms; they do not establish that every phone protector performs equally well or preserves the same display appearance. Before buying, match the protector to your exact phone model and check that it supports features you use, including touch and fingerprint recognition where relevant. Google documents a screen-protector mode to increase touch sensitivity on supported Pixel phones; availability is not universal.

- Check the symptom: Decide whether the screen image is too dim, a sharp reflection is visible, or both.
- For a dim image: Adjust brightness or enable adaptive brightness using your phone’s own display settings. Look for extra-brightness features only if your model supports them.
- For a persistent sharp reflection: Consider a matte anti-glare protector designed for your exact handset. Treat it as a way to diffuse reflections, not a guarantee that glare will be eliminated or image quality unchanged.
- Check compatibility before purchase: Confirm the exact model fit and any touch or fingerprint requirements. If you use a supported Pixel, check its screen-protector touch-sensitivity setting.
- Reduce high brightness when conditions change: Switch off an extra-brightness mode when leaving bright surroundings to avoid its battery cost and potential eye strain in darker conditions.
