The cable and scaler must match the particular Genesis or Mega Drive model and its video output. For an easier setup that does not use original cartridges, a Genesis or Mega Drive Mini 2 connects directly to a TV over HDMI.
Choose between original hardware and a mini console

A scaler converts a signal; it does not add Genesis cartridge compatibility to a TV. The Mini 2 is a separate console, not an HDMI adapter for an original Genesis. How to connect an original Genesis to an HDMI TV
- Identify your exact Genesis or Mega Drive model and the analog video output it supports. Choose a cable that matches both the console and the scaler’s input; a standard HDMI cable alone cannot connect the original console to the TV.
- Connect the console to the scaler using the compatible analog cable. Composite is one possible connection, but higher-quality options such as S-Video, component, or RGB may be available depending on the console model and cable.
- Connect the scaler’s digital video output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Power the scaler as specified by its manufacturer. The RetroTINK-5X Pro setup calls for a USB power source capable of 5V/2A.
- Select the TV’s HDMI input and the matching input on the scaler, if required. The scaler’s instructions determine the available input and output settings.

RetroTINK-5X Pro: flexible inputs and output modes
The RetroTINK-5X Pro accepts composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART inputs and provides digital video output. It supports 240p input and lists standard output modes up to 1080p. RetroTINK publishes latency of about 0.25 frames in Framelock mode and 0.25–1.25 frames in Triple Buffering; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. RetroTINK says composite produces lower-quality video and recommends higher-quality connections such as S-Video, component, or RGB for optimal results. The best connection you can use depends on what your specific console supports and the matching cable you can obtain.

RetroTINK-2X Pro: check the Genesis composite warning
The RetroTINK-2X Pro accepts component, S-Video, and composite, and line-doubles standard-definition signals. Its maker describes it as a legacy product and warns that Genesis composite output may be off-spec and may not work correctly. RetroTINK-2X MINI: not recommended for Genesis

Do not assume that a generic composite-to-HDMI converter will work reliably with every Genesis. Check the converter’s compatibility with your exact console and signal before buying.
What affects picture quality and compatibility?
- Console model: Genesis and Mega Drive versions may differ in available video outputs. Verify the output on your own console rather than choosing a cable by name alone.
- Signal type: Composite is convenient, but RetroTINK describes it as lower quality than S-Video, component, or RGB. Use a signal and cable supported by both your console and scaler.
- Scaler compatibility: A scaler’s input list does not guarantee that every console produces a signal it handles correctly. The 2X Pro and 2X MINI warnings are examples of why model-specific compatibility matters.
- TV connection: The scaler performs the analog-to-digital conversion. The original Genesis does not become an HDMI console simply by using an HDMI cable.
When a Genesis Mini or Mega Drive Mini 2 makes more sense
Choose a mini console if you want a direct HDMI connection and are content with its included game library rather than playing original cartridges. SEGA’s 2022 announcement for Mega Drive Mini 2 specified over 50 titles and listed a high-speed HDMI cable among the included items. That announcement does not make the Mini 2 an adapter or confirm current stock, pricing, or availability.
