The best method depends on the ports and equipment you already have. There are three practical routes: connect the original PlayStation directly to a television with a compatible analog input, place a dedicated analog-to-digital scaler between the console and an HDMI TV, or run PlayStation-format software on a PlayStation 3 connected by HDMI. Direct analog is simplest, a scaler is the most flexible for an original console, and a PS3 can be convenient if you already own one—but Sony warns that some PlayStation-format games may behave differently or may not work properly on PS3.
The important distinction is that the original PS1 outputs analog video. An HDMI-only television cannot use that signal through a passive plug or cable alone; it needs active conversion, such as a scaler, or a different console that provides HDMI output.

Choose the route that fits your equipment
| Route | What you need | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS1 to a TV analog input | PS1 cable and a television with a matching composite input | Fewest components and the simplest setup | Many modern TVs omit analog inputs, and the TV’s own processing determines how the picture is handled |
| Original PS1 through an analog video scaler | PS1 cable, a scaler that supports the signal, and an HDMI cable to the TV | Converts supported analog video to digital output for an HDMI display | More hardware and compatibility checks; PS1 composite can be off-spec on some scalers |
| PlayStation-format software on PS3 | Compatible PS3, HDMI cable, and the games or software you intend to use | HDMI output without sending the original PS1’s analog signal to the TV | Sony says some PlayStation-format titles can run differently or fail to work properly |
Do not choose by connector shape alone. First identify the signal coming from the console or cable, then confirm that the next device accepts that signal. A television’s yellow video jack, a scaler’s composite input, and an RGB/HD15 connection are different parts of a signal chain, even if they ultimately feed the same screen.

Check the television’s exact ports
Look at the television itself or its model-specific manual. Do not assume that a new set has composite video just because the television has older-looking audio connectors, and do not assume that an adapter supplied with one model works with another. You need a video input that matches the PS1 cable’s output, plus the corresponding audio inputs.
Composite is the usual simple connection: video travels on the composite video lead and audio on the left and right audio leads. Some televisions place these jacks on a breakout adapter rather than directly on the chassis. That adapter is part of the TV’s input system; it is not an upscaler.
Connect and select the input
- Turn off the PS1 and television before connecting the cable.
- Connect the cable to the PS1’s AV output.
- Connect the video and audio plugs to the television’s matching analog input. Match left and right audio channels.
- Power on the TV, select the corresponding input label, and then start the PS1.
- If the TV offers an aspect-ratio or picture-mode choice, use the setting that keeps the original image proportions rather than stretching it.
The television is responsible for processing the analog signal in this arrangement. A direct connection does not itself upscale the source. If the set displays a stable picture and acceptable controls, this can be the most convenient solution. If the TV has no compatible analog input, move to a scaler or PS3 instead of trying to force an HDMI-only connection with a passive cable.
Route 2: use a dedicated analog video scaler
A scaler accepts an analog video signal, processes it, and outputs digital video for an HDMI display. This is the appropriate type of device when you want to keep using the original PS1 but your television has no usable analog input.

What a scaler does—and what a passive cable cannot do
The PS1’s analog output and the TV’s HDMI input speak different electrical and signal formats. A passive plug can change the physical connector arrangement, but it cannot perform the analog-to-digital conversion or timing work required by HDMI. A scaler is active electronics, with an input stage for the analog format and a digital output stage for the television.
Before buying or installing one, write down the signal your PS1 cable provides. Composite, S-Video, component, and RGB/HD15 are not interchangeable. The scaler must explicitly support the format you plan to use.
Example: RetroTINK-2X Pro
The RetroTINK-2X Pro is an example of a scaler whose manufacturer lists composite, S-Video, and component inputs and digital video output. That makes it a possible bridge between supported analog retro-console signals and an HDMI television. Its documented compatibility warning matters for PS1 owners: PS1 and PSOne composite output can be off-spec and may not work correctly with the 2X Pro. Treat that as a model-and-signal compatibility issue, not proof that every PS1 or every input mode will fail.
Check the scaler’s current documentation for the exact input mode before connecting your console. If composite is unreliable, determine whether your particular console and cable can provide another supported signal, rather than assuming that changing the TV or HDMI cable will fix an incompatible source.

Basic scaler setup
- Confirm the scaler accepts the PS1’s signal type. Use the manufacturer’s input list, not only the appearance of the connector.
- Connect the PS1’s AV cable to the scaler’s matching analog input.
- Connect the scaler’s digital output to an HDMI input on the television.
- Connect any required power for the scaler, following its documentation.
- Select the scaler’s HDMI input on the TV, then power on the PS1.
- If the scaler has an input-mode control, choose the mode matching the connected cable. An incorrect mode can produce a blank, unstable, or incorrectly colored picture.
This chain adds a second device that can be misconfigured, but it also avoids relying on the television’s analog-video circuitry. Keep the console, cable, scaler, and TV settings documented so that you can isolate a fault one link at a time.
Advanced option: RGB and the PS1 HD15 dongle
An RGB/HD15 installation is a specialist path, not a universal HDMI adapter. RetroTINK’s PS1 HD15 dongle is an active adapter intended to connect a PS1 signal to a compatible scaler. The dongle does not upscale the picture or alter its timing, and it is not designed for PS2 or PS3. You still need a scaler that accepts the resulting signal.
That distinction prevents a common mistake: buying the dongle expecting it to turn the PS1 directly into an HDMI source. The complete chain is the modified or compatible PS1 output, the HD15 dongle, a scaler with the appropriate input, and then HDMI to the TV.

Compatibility cautions for the dongle
- Verify that your scaler accepts the dongle’s output format.
- Do not treat the dongle as an upscaler; scaling remains the scaler’s job.
- Do not use it as a PS2 or PS3 accessory.
- Some HDMI-modded PS1 units can experience sync-drop issues related to power on the AV-out pin. If your console has an HDMI modification, check the adapter maker’s compatibility notes before adding the dongle.
For most readers, direct composite or a supported scaler input is easier to troubleshoot. The HD15 route makes sense only when the console, cable path, and scaler are deliberately selected as a system.

Route 3: play PlayStation-format software on a PS3 over HDMI
A PS3 can avoid the original PS1’s analog-to-HDMI problem because Sony documents HDMI video output for the PS3. Connect the PS3 to the television by HDMI, select the matching HDMI input, and use the PS3’s game and display settings for the setup.
Sony’s video-output documentation notes that HDMI output depends on the connected display’s HDCP compatibility. If the TV does not establish the required HDMI/HDCP connection, the problem is between the PS3, the display, and the HDMI path—not a missing PS1 scaler.
What the PS3 route does not guarantee
Sony’s game-settings guidance warns that some PlayStation-format games may run differently on PS3 and that some may not work properly. Therefore, a PS3 is not an assumption-free replacement for an original PS1. Check the specific game and software format you intend to use, and keep the original console route in mind if exact original-console behavior is important.

This option is most practical when you already own a compatible PS3 and the required games or software. It avoids buying a separate analog scaler, but it introduces the PS3’s own compatibility layer. Do not describe the result as identical to running every title on original hardware.

Match the signal, cable, and input before troubleshooting
Most failed setups can be traced to one of four mismatches: the TV has no analog input, the cable’s signal is not the one the scaler expects, the scaler does not support the particular PS1 output, or the HDMI path does not establish a display connection.
| What you have | What the next device must accept | Typical next step |
|---|---|---|
| PS1 composite cable | Composite input on the TV or scaler | Use direct analog if the TV supports it; otherwise use a scaler with composite support, while checking the PS1 off-spec warning |
| PS1 S-Video cable | S-Video input on the TV or scaler | Use a matching S-Video input; do not plug it into a composite jack by appearance alone |
| PS1 component path | Component input on the TV or scaler | Confirm that the complete cable and input path support component video |
| RGB/HD15 path | A compatible scaler input, often via an appropriate adapter | Use the HD15 dongle only as part of a supported scaler chain |
| PS3 HDMI output | HDMI input with compatible HDCP behavior | Connect directly to the TV and check PS3 output and game compatibility |
If a value is not stated by the equipment maker, do not infer it from the connector. A device that accepts composite is not automatically an RGB processor, and a device with an HDMI socket is not automatically an analog converter.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The TV says “no signal” with a direct PS1 connection
- Confirm that the TV is on the analog input used by the cable, not an HDMI input.
- Check that the video plug is in the TV’s video jack and that the audio plugs are not being mistaken for video.
- Try the TV’s other analog input arrangement if the model uses a supplied breakout adapter.
- Verify that the PS1 is powered and that the game or system screen is actually starting.
- If the television has no compatible analog input, stop pursuing a passive cable and use a supported scaler or PS3.
The scaler shows a black or unstable image
- Confirm that the scaler input mode matches the cable: composite, S-Video, component, or RGB/HD15.
- Check the PS1 composite compatibility warning. A PS1 or PSOne composite signal can be off-spec for the RetroTINK-2X Pro.
- Test the console and cable directly on a known-compatible analog display, if available, to separate a console problem from a scaler problem.
- Remove unnecessary adapters and reconnect the analog and HDMI links firmly.
The PS1 works, but the HDMI television behaves inconsistently
Separate the analog side from the HDMI side. First confirm that the scaler is receiving a stable source; then check the scaler’s digital output and the TV’s selected HDMI input. A passive HDMI cable swap cannot correct an unsupported analog signal or a scaler-input mismatch.

The HD15 setup loses sync
Review the adapter and scaler documentation, especially if the PS1 has an HDMI modification. The HD15 dongle maker warns that some HDMI-modded PS1 units can have sync-drop issues related to power on the AV-out pin. This is a hardware-path compatibility problem and may require a different supported configuration, not merely a different TV setting.
The PS3 displays video but a game does not behave as expected
Use Sony’s compatibility warning as the starting point: some PlayStation-format titles may run differently or may not work properly on PS3. Test the specific title, confirm the PS3 software and game format, and use the original PS1 route when the PS3’s behavior is unacceptable for that game.
How to decide between convenience and control
Choose direct analog when
- Your TV has a confirmed compatible analog input.
- You want the fewest components and cables.
- You accept that the TV, rather than a separate scaler, handles the analog processing.
Choose a scaler when
- Your TV is HDMI-only or its analog input is unavailable.
- You want a dedicated device that accepts the PS1’s specific analog format.
- You are willing to verify input compatibility and troubleshoot an extra link.
Choose a PS3 when
- You already have a compatible PS3 and HDMI television.
- The software you want is supported well enough for your use.
- You prefer a console-based HDMI path over maintaining an original PS1 analog chain.
No sourced head-to-head test establishes a universal winner for image quality, latency, or a CRT-like appearance among these routes. Those outcomes depend on the console signal, the scaler or television processing, the display, and the individual game. The defensible choice is the path that matches your ports and your tolerance for compatibility work.
A practical setup checklist
- Write down the console: original PS1, PSOne, HDMI-modded PS1, or PS3.
- Identify the cable’s signal: composite, S-Video, component, or RGB/HD15.
- List the TV’s actual inputs and any required breakout adapter.
- If using a scaler, confirm that it accepts that exact signal and review its PS1 compatibility notes.
- If using the HD15 dongle, confirm the complete dongle-to-scaler chain and exclude PS2/PS3 use.
- If using a PS3, connect by HDMI and account for HDCP compatibility and title-specific behavior.
- Power on in a controlled order, select the correct TV input, and change only one setting at a time.
- Record which combination works so a future cable or TV change does not recreate the diagnosis.
Bottom line
For an HDMI-only TV, the original PS1 needs an active scaler or another HDMI-capable console route; a passive cable is not enough. Use direct analog when the TV has a matching input, use a scaler when you want to preserve the original console on an HDMI display, and use a PS3 when its title-specific compatibility is acceptable. Verify the signal type at every link, and treat PS1 composite and advanced HD15 paths as compatibility cases rather than guaranteed plug-and-play solutions.
