The best method depends on where your gaming PC sits. If it is close enough to the television for a practical cable run, connect the PC directly to an HDMI input. That avoids game-stream encoding and decoding. If the PC is in another room, stream from it with Steam Link or, for a more configurable setup, Sunshine on the PC with Moonlight as the client. None of these methods requires opening, replacing parts in, or otherwise modifying a PS5.
PS Remote Play is different: it streams games that are running on a PS4 or PS5. It does not turn a PS5 into a receiver for Windows games.

Choose the connection before buying anything
Start with two questions: how far is the PC from the TV, and where do you want the game to run? A direct HDMI connection runs the game on the PC and sends its display signal to the television. A streaming setup also runs the game on the PC, but captures, encodes and sends the picture and sound across your home network while returning controller input to the PC.
| Method | Best fit | What runs the game | Main dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC to TV over HDMI | The computer is nearby or a cable can be routed safely | Your gaming PC | PC and TV video support, plus a practical cable length |
| Steam Link | You primarily use Steam and want the simplest client setup | Your gaming PC running Steam | A compatible TV or streaming device and a stable network |
| Sunshine with Moonlight | You want broader desktop or game streaming control | Your gaming PC running the host software | Compatible host and client software, network quality and configuration |
| PS Remote Play | You want to stream PS4 or PS5 games | Your PlayStation console | PlayStation Remote Play compatibility and network conditions |
There is no controlled, same-hardware latency comparison establishing a universal winner between HDMI, Steam Link and Sunshine/Moonlight. Streaming adds capture, encoding, network transport, decoding and display processing, so the result depends on your PC, client device, router, television settings and game.

1. Connect the gaming PC directly to the TV with HDMI
Direct HDMI is the least complicated route when the PC and TV are close enough. The television acts as another display for the computer; the PS5 is not involved.
What you need
- A free HDMI input on the TV.
- A matching video output on the gaming PC. Many desktop graphics cards provide HDMI, while some systems use another output that requires a suitable adapter.
- A cable long enough to reach without being pinched, sharply bent or placed where it can be pulled.
- A controller paired with the PC, or a wireless receiver that the PC supports.
The cable must support the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use, and the PC’s output, TV input and television panel must support that mode together. A longer cable is not automatically better; choose the shortest safe route that meets your placement needs.
Setup steps
- Turn off or suspend the PC if you prefer, then connect the cable from the PC’s video output to an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Use the TV remote to select that HDMI input.
- In the computer’s display settings, select the TV and set the desired resolution, refresh rate and HDR option if the PC and TV support them.
- Enable the television’s game-oriented picture mode when available. This usually reduces picture processing, although the exact label and behavior vary by model.
- Pair your controller with the PC, not the PS5. Test buttons and vibration in the game or its controller settings before starting a long session.
Valve’s instructions for the discontinued Steam Link hardware also show the basic pattern: HDMI carries the picture to the display, while the gaming computer can use a wired network connection. That legacy device listed 720p or 1080p display guidance. Those figures describe that old Steam Link unit, not a limit on a current gaming PC connected directly to a modern TV.
Advantages and limits
- Advantages: no home-network video stream, no client app and no separate host configuration. The PC renders the game and the TV displays its signal.
- Limits: the PC must be close enough for a safe cable route; the TV still needs to support your chosen mode; and controller range can become a separate problem in a living room.
Keep the PC’s audio output in mind. Windows may continue sending sound to the computer’s speakers or headset after the TV is connected. Select the television or HDMI audio device in the operating system, then set the game’s output device if it has its own audio selector.

2. Stream Steam games with Steam Link
Steam Link is the straightforward software route when your games are in Steam. Steam runs the title on the gaming PC. The TV-side Steam Link client receives the encoded video and audio and sends controller input back.
Supported client categories
Valve lists Steam Link destinations including Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Raspberry Pi and other compatible platforms. Availability is not identical across every television or model. Check the exact TV, streaming box or stick in its current app store before purchasing hardware or planning a setup.
Steam Link setup
- Install the Steam Link application on the compatible TV or streaming device.
- On the gaming PC, install or update Steam and sign in to the account that owns the games.
- Open Steam Link and select the computer it discovers. If more than one computer appears, choose the one with the games and controller you intend to use.
- Follow the on-screen pairing or PIN procedure. Steam Link may run a connection test before it lets you continue.
- Connect the controller to the client device when supported, or use the connection method documented for that device. Confirm that Steam sees the controller.
- Launch a game from the Steam Link interface. The game remains installed and running on the PC; the TV is showing the stream.
Valve describes Remote Play as real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol. Its product description says that video and audio go from the gaming PC to another device while remote input and multiplayer voice go back to the PC within milliseconds. “Within milliseconds” is a design description, not a promise of zero delay or a measured ranking against HDMI.
Network arrangement
A wired connection from the host PC to the router is a sensible starting point, and Valve’s Steam Link hardware guidance explicitly recommends wired networking between the Link and gaming PC. If the TV-side device must use Wi-Fi, place it where signal quality is strong and avoid congesting the same band with large downloads or video transfers while playing. A smooth stream is determined by the entire path, not by the internet speed shown in a broadband advert; this is normally a local-network workload.

When Steam Link is the right choice
- You already organize the library in Steam.
- Your TV or streaming device has an official, currently available Steam Link client.
- You prefer a guided setup over manually selecting host applications and streaming profiles.
- You can give the host PC and client a reliable network path.
Steam Link is not a way to run Windows games on the PS5. The client must be a supported TV-side app or device, while the PC remains the host.
3. Stream the desktop or games with Sunshine and Moonlight
Sunshine is a streaming host installed on the gaming PC; Moonlight is the client named in Sunshine’s setup documentation. Together they provide a more configurable alternative to a Steam-focused client. Depending on the client and configuration, you can stream a desktop or games rather than limiting the interface to a Steam library.
Host and client roles
- Sunshine host: installed and configured on the gaming PC that renders the game.
- Moonlight client: installed on a compatible TV-side device or streaming box that displays the stream and returns controller input.
Client availability varies by device. Verify support for the exact TV or box before choosing this route, because a general statement that a platform can run Moonlight does not guarantee that your particular television model can.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Basic setup sequence
- Install Sunshine on the gaming PC and complete its host configuration.
- Install Moonlight on the TV-side hardware that you have confirmed is supported.
- Put the host and client on the same home network, preferably with the gaming PC connected by Ethernet when practical.
- Open Moonlight and select the discovered Sunshine host. Pair the client using the code or confirmation procedure shown by the applications.
- Choose a desktop or game entry exposed by the host, then test video, audio and controller input before adjusting image quality.
- Change resolution, frame rate, bitrate and encoder options one at a time. If a change makes the stream unstable, return to the previous working value.
Because the software is split into host and client components, troubleshooting has more branches than Steam Link. A host that is reachable but fails to start a game can have an application or permission issue; a host that does not appear at all points more often to discovery, firewall or network isolation.

HDR requires a compatible chain
Sunshine version 0.23.0 documentation says HDR streaming is officially supported on Windows hosts and experimentally supported on Linux hosts. It requires HDR to be enabled on the host and in Moonlight, and it notes capture, display-calibration and GPU-encoder requirements. Treat that as version-specific guidance rather than a permanent guarantee for every later release or device.
For HDR to look correct, the host game, operating system, GPU encoder, capture path, client application and television must all handle the selected signal. If the picture is washed out, too dark or has incorrect colors, first disable HDR on both ends and confirm that ordinary SDR streaming works. Then re-enable HDR on the host and client and check the TV’s HDR picture mode.
4. Keep PS Remote Play in its proper role
PS Remote Play is for streaming games running on a PS4 or PS5 to compatible devices. Sony states that a PS4 or PS5 console is required. It does not accept a PC game as an input source, and it cannot substitute for HDMI, Steam Link or Sunshine when the goal is to play a Windows game on the television.

Where it can be useful
If you also want to play PlayStation titles away from the console, Sony lists Android TV OS 12 or later and identifies current availability that includes Chromecast with Google TV in both 4K and HD versions and the BRAVIA XR A95L. Compatibility can change, so confirm the current app and device requirements before relying on a particular model.

Sony’s guidance calls for 5 Mbps internet and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better PS Remote Play experience. Those are Sony’s figures for PS Remote Play; they are not universal bandwidth requirements for Steam Link or Sunshine/Moonlight.
Sony also warns that greater distance between the console and the remote TV can increase latency and that performance varies by game and network. Some controller features are unavailable on Android TV. These constraints matter only for the PlayStation stream, not for the PC methods above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between the PC methods
Choose direct HDMI when
- The computer is in the same room or a cable can be routed without creating a trip hazard.
- You want the fewest software layers and do not want to tune a network stream.
- Your TV and PC support the resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode you want.
Choose Steam Link when
- Most of your library is in Steam.
- Your exact TV or streaming device has the current Steam Link client.
- You want a guided pairing flow and a familiar Steam interface.
Choose Sunshine with Moonlight when
- You want to stream a desktop or games with more host-side control.
- You accept installing and maintaining separate host and client software.
- Your preferred TV-side hardware supports Moonlight and your network is dependable.
| Decision factor | What favors HDMI | What favors streaming |
|---|---|---|
| PC location | Nearby or easy cable route | Another room or inaccessible location |
| Setup effort | Connect, select input and configure display | Install, pair and maintain host/client software |
| Network dependence | No streamed video path | Strong local connection needed for consistent results |
| Library scope | Any game the PC can display | Steam Link is Steam-oriented; Sunshine/Moonlight can expose broader PC use |
| HDR | Depends on the PC, cable, TV input and display settings | Depends on every capture, encoder, client and display component; Sunshine 0.23.0 documents Windows support and Linux experimental support |
Troubleshooting checklist
The TV shows “no signal” over HDMI
- Confirm that the TV is on the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Check that the cable is connected to an active output on the PC rather than an unused motherboard port when the system uses a discrete graphics card.
- Try a supported resolution and refresh rate, then test another TV input if available.
- Reconnect the cable after the PC has started and verify that the TV appears in the operating system’s display settings.
Steam Link cannot find the PC
- Make sure Steam is running and signed in on the host.
- Confirm that the TV device and PC are on the same home network rather than an isolated guest network.
- Check the host computer’s firewall prompt and allow Steam or the required local-network access.
- Restart the Steam Link app and Steam, then repeat pairing.
The stream is blurry, stutters or drops frames
- Use Ethernet for the host PC where practical.
- Move the Wi-Fi client closer to the router or use a wired client.
- Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Lower the stream’s resolution, frame rate or bitrate until playback is stable, then increase one setting at a time.
- Check whether the TV itself is adding motion processing; use its game-oriented display mode.
Sunshine host does not appear in Moonlight
- Verify that Sunshine is running and the PC is awake.
- Confirm that both devices are on the same network and that client isolation is disabled.
- Review the operating system firewall and Sunshine’s permissions.
- Test discovery from another supported client if available; this helps distinguish a host problem from a TV-device compatibility problem.
Controller input does not reach the game
- Pair the controller with the device that is actually receiving the stream, or with the PC for direct HDMI.
- Check that the client recognizes the controller before launching the game.
- Use the game’s input settings to select the detected controller and remove duplicate virtual-controller entries if they cause conflicts.
- Remember that a controller paired to the PS5 is not automatically available to a PC stream.
Picture quality, latency and expectations
Direct HDMI removes the network streaming stages, but it does not guarantee a particular response time: the TV’s processing, the game’s frame rate and the chosen display mode still matter. Streaming adds capture, encoding, transport and decoding, so network jitter can appear as stutter or input delay even when the game itself runs at a high frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsResolution, refresh rate, HDR and color behavior are negotiated by the specific PC, TV input, client hardware and software settings. A television that accepts 4K from an HDMI source may not accept the same mode through a particular streaming client. Treat every claimed mode as a compatibility check, not an automatic capability.
What you do not need to change on the PS5
For all three PC approaches, leave the PS5 unmodified. Do not open the console, replace its storage or install unofficial firmware to make a PC appear on the TV. Select the TV input connected to the PC, or launch the appropriate TV-side streaming client. The PS5 can remain connected to another HDMI input for ordinary console play.
The Bottom Line
Use a direct HDMI connection when the PC is close enough; it is the simplest and least network-dependent option. For a distant PC, start with Steam Link if the games are in Steam and the exact TV device supports it. Choose Sunshine with Moonlight when you need broader PC streaming and are willing to configure separate host and client software. PS Remote Play remains a PlayStation-only service and is not a method for running PC games.
