Yes—you can play some original Xbox games without the original console. The simplest option is an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, but Microsoft supports only selected titles. On a PC, the free xemu emulator can run some games if your computer meets its graphics requirement and you supply the necessary Xbox system files and game image. Neither option works with every original Xbox game.

Start by checking whether your specific game is supported. Then consider whether you already have a disc or digital copy, whether your console has a disc drive, and whether you are comfortable setting up an emulator and sourcing files lawfully.

Play supported games on Xbox One or Series X|S
Microsoft’s backward-compatibility program covers select original Xbox titles, not the complete original Xbox library. Check the current Xbox catalog for the exact game before buying a console or relying on a disc. The Xbox Wire announcement from October 23, 2017 named games including BLACK, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Fuzion Frenzy, Ninja Gaiden Black, Psychonauts and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic; these are historical examples from that launch announcement, not a substitute for checking the live catalog. Using an original disc
If your game is supported and your Xbox has a disc drive, insert the disc to install the game to the console’s storage. Keep the disc in the drive to play. Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot use an original Xbox disc.

Using a digital copy
Supported digital titles can be played on compatible consoles. Xbox describes backward compatibility for eligible games owned by the player as free; that does not mean every original Xbox game is available digitally or included in the catalog. Check the title’s current listing for availability.
Features that do not carry over
- Original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility.
- Offline co-op, local multiplayer and system-link may work when the original game supports them.
- These games do not receive Xbox achievements through the program.
- Original Xbox save files do not transfer to Xbox One or Series X|S. Saves made on a newer console can sync among Xbox One and Series X|S consoles through the cloud.

Play on a computer with xemu
xemu is a free, open-source original Xbox emulator for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its stated graphics requirement is an OpenGL 4.0-compatible GPU. Meeting that requirement does not guarantee a particular game will run well: performance depends on the computer, and compatibility reports are community submissions tied to particular emulator versions and systems. Files and formats xemu needs
Besides the emulator, xemu needs an MCPX boot ROM image, an Xbox-compatible BIOS and a hard disk image. The project says an unmodified retail BIOS cannot boot games because required key DRM functions are not implemented; it describes using a debug or modified BIOS. Its basic downloadable 8 GB disk image contains no copyrighted material and uses an unsigned basic dashboard. xemu says the lawful way to obtain protected Xbox system files is to dump them from a real physical Xbox. For games, xemu expects an XISO image. A file ending in .iso is not necessarily in the right format. xemu documents ways to back up legally purchased media and create or extract XISO images. Some full “redump” images include an extra video partition, so they may need the game partition extracted or repacked before use. Read the disc-image instructions.
What to expect from compatibility
Compatibility and performance vary by title, xemu version and computer. The project’s reports are community-submitted and may need updating as the emulator changes. Treat them as useful game-specific guidance, not a guarantee. This route is most practical if you already have a suitable computer and can make lawful backups of your own game media and system files.

Do not assume an original disc can be converted to digital
Xbox announced a disc-to-digital entitlement feature on August 26, 2026 for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games. The announcement says Xbox Cloud Gaming and Play Anywhere benefits apply where supported, and that not every title would be available at launch. It does not say original Xbox discs qualify, so inserting one should not be assumed to create a digital entitlement. Read Xbox’s announcement.
