If your TV has a compatible analog video input, connect the PS2’s rear AV Multi Out with the appropriate cable and select that input. If the TV has only HDMI, add a PS2-to-HDMI converter or a component-to-HDMI scaler, recognizing that image quality, latency and compatibility depend on the specific device. You can also use a PS3 model that supports PS2-format discs, or run the disc in PCSX2 on a computer with a DVD/CD drive.
Choose the signal path by checking your TV first
The original PlayStation 2 outputs analog video and stereo audio through its rear AV Multi Out connector. Sony’s connection instructions show the basic sequence: connect the console to a television video input with a suitable cable, then switch the television to that input. The exact labels and available sockets vary by television model, so a Sony BRAVIA connection page is an example of model-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every modern TV has the same ports.

Look at the back or side of the television and identify which of these situations applies:
- Composite video available: You can use a standard PS2 AV lead with the yellow video plug and red/white audio plugs, provided the television accepts those connectors.
- Component video available: A PS2 component AV cable can provide a separate red, green and blue video connection plus red/white audio. Sony lists component cable models SCPH-10490 and SCPH-10100 for PS2 90000, 70000, 50000, 30000 and 10000 families.
- HDMI only: The analog PS2 output must pass through an external converter or scaler before it reaches the television’s HDMI input.
- No suitable input and no converter: The console cannot connect directly; choose a different display, an appropriate converter, a supported PS3, or a computer running PCSX2.
Before buying anything, check the console model number, the cable connector, the television’s input labels and how audio will be routed. A television may have a connector that looks familiar but is assigned to a different function, or may require a breakout adapter supplied with that particular set.

Option 1: connect the PS2 to a compatible analog input
What you need
- A working PS2 console and power lead.
- A cable that plugs into the rear AV Multi Out socket.
- A television with the corresponding composite or component input.
- Red and white audio inputs, or an audio system that can accept those channels.
Setup steps
- Turn off the PS2 and television.
- Insert the cable’s PS2 connector fully into the console’s rear AV Multi Out port.
- Connect the video plug or plugs to the television’s matching video sockets. For composite, this is normally one video connection; for component, use the three video channels identified on the cable and television.
- Connect the red and white audio plugs to the television’s left and right audio inputs. Some televisions place those audio sockets beside the component inputs rather than beside the video sockets.
- Turn on the television and select the input that corresponds to the sockets used. Sony’s instructions specifically require selecting the matching TV input after connecting the console.
- Start the PS2. If the console menu appears, the basic signal path is working; set the television’s aspect or picture mode to preserve the game’s intended 4:3 framing where possible.
If there is sound but no picture, recheck the video plug and the selected input. If there is picture but no sound, verify that the red and white plugs are connected to the audio inputs associated with the selected video input. If neither appears, reseat the AV Multi Out connector, test another input and confirm that the cable is intended for PS2 use.

Option 2: use a PS2 component AV cable
Component is a separate analog connection category, not an HDMI signal. Sony’s accessory compatibility table identifies component AV cable models SCPH-10490 and SCPH-10100 as compatible with the PS2 90000, 70000, 50000, 30000 and 10000 series. The table is a compatibility reference for those model families; it does not establish current retail availability, and Sony notes that support combinations can vary. After-sales service for PS2 hardware has ended.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck compatibility before ordering
- Read the model number on the console label and match it to the 90000, 70000, 50000, 30000 or 10000 family listed by Sony.
- Confirm that the cable is a component AV cable, not a composite lead with similar-looking red and white audio plugs.
- Confirm that the television has three component video inputs and the associated stereo audio inputs. If the television has only HDMI, the component cable still needs a converter or scaler.
- Check regional and signal support in the television manual. The cited compatibility table identifies cable and console combinations, but it does not test every television.
Connect the cable with the console and television powered off, then select the television’s component input. Preserve 4:3 framing if the set offers an aspect-ratio control. Do not assume that a component cable alone converts the signal to digital HDMI or guarantees a sharper picture; those outcomes depend on the display and any processing device in the chain.

Option 3: add a PS2-to-HDMI converter or component-to-HDMI scaler
An HDMI-only television needs an intermediate device because the PS2’s documented output is analog. The intermediate device may accept the PS2’s composite or component connection and output HDMI. A PS2-to-HDMI adapter and a component-to-HDMI scaler are categories, not a single standardized performance level.
What to verify in a converter or scaler
- Input type: Make sure the device accepts the exact cable path you plan to use: composite, component or another explicitly supported PS2 signal.
- Output and power: Confirm the HDMI version, required USB or external power and the television’s supported resolution range.
- Regional signal: Verify support for the console’s regional video format and the games you intend to play.
- Audio routing: Check whether audio travels through HDMI, requires a separate output or needs an external extractor.
- Aspect ratio: Look for a way to retain the original 4:3 presentation instead of stretching it to widescreen.
- Display behavior: Read the device’s current specifications for supported modes, handling of sync changes and any stated latency. The official materials reviewed here do not provide comparative measurements.
Generic connection procedure
- Connect the PS2 AV Multi Out to the converter or scaler using the cable type that its input specifies.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an open HDMI input on the television.
- Attach the converter’s required power supply before testing the signal.
- Select the television’s HDMI input and then start the PS2.
- Set the converter and television to a non-stretched aspect ratio where available.
- If the screen remains blank, test the converter with another HDMI input, remove intermediate switches, confirm the console’s cable type and check whether the device lists the PS2 signal format as supported.
There is no evidence here that a particular adapter removes input lag, improves every game, works with every PS2 revision or outperforms a television’s own scaling. Those are product-specific claims that require current specifications or independent testing. Choose a device only after checking its documented inputs and the return or support policy available in your region.

Can a PS3 play an original PS2 disc?
Sometimes, but the PS3 model matters. Sony’s PlayStation 3 User’s Guide warns that some PS3 systems cannot play PS2-format discs. It also warns that some PS2 software may work differently or may not work properly on a supported system. Therefore, a PS3 owner must identify the exact console model and verify the individual title before relying on this route.
PS3 checks
- Find the PS3 model identifier on the console and in its system information.
- Confirm in Sony’s current documentation that this model supports PS2-format discs; do not infer support from the presence of a disc drive or from another PS3 revision.
- Check the specific game, because Sony documents title-level differences even on systems that accept PS2 discs.
- Insert the original disc only after the model and title checks are complete.
- If you use the PS3’s SD-to-HD upscaling controls, connect the PS3 to the television by HDMI or component AV as required by Sony’s guide, then adjust the game settings and television aspect mode together.
The PS3 path can reduce the number of external conversion boxes, but it changes the console doing the rendering and is not a universal replacement for an original PS2. A compatible PS3 is also a separate piece of hardware whose condition and availability vary.

Can PCSX2 read an original PS2 disc?
PCSX2’s official disc documentation says PS2 game discs are unencrypted DVDs and CDs that a standard DVD/CD-capable optical drive can read. The emulator can therefore use a disc directly when the computer has a suitable optical drive. PCSX2 also describes practical advantages to dumping the disc to an image file and running that file instead.
Direct-disc approach
- Install a current PCSX2 release on a computer that meets the emulator’s setup requirements.
- Confirm that the computer has an optical drive capable of reading DVDs and CDs. The PS2 console’s drive is not used by the emulator.
- Insert the original PS2 disc into the computer’s drive.
- In PCSX2, select the optical-drive source according to the version’s documented interface and start the game.
- If the game does not boot, consult PCSX2’s compatibility and setup guidance for that title and computer rather than assuming the disc is defective.
Dumping the disc to an image
PCSX2’s guide explains that creating a disc image and using the image file has advantages over repeatedly reading the optical disc. The exact dumping workflow depends on the operating system and drive software, so follow the current PCSX2 documentation for those steps. Keep the original disc available for verification, and use only images made from discs you are entitled to use. The guide’s statement that a standard optical drive can read PS2 discs does not guarantee identical behavior for every drive, game or computer configuration.
Picture shape, scaling and expectations
PS2 games were designed for older television standards and commonly present a 4:3 image. A modern widescreen television may offer stretch, zoom, or original-aspect options. Select the mode that keeps circles round and avoids cutting off menus; the correct choice can differ between the television, converter and game.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Every path can add processing: the television may deinterlace or scale an analog signal, a converter may resample it, and a PS3 or PCSX2 may apply its own output processing. The reviewed official sources do not compare image quality or latency among these paths. Treat claims of a universally best picture, zero lag or guaranteed compatibility as unverified unless a specific product provides supporting measurements.
Troubleshoot in a fixed order
No picture and no sound
- Confirm that the PS2 power light is on and that the television is set to the exact input used.
- Reseat the connector at the PS2 AV Multi Out port and at the television or converter.
- Remove HDMI switches, receivers and splitters temporarily.
- Check that the cable type matches the selected input: composite, component or the converter’s specified input.
Picture without sound
- Reconnect the red and white audio plugs to the left and right inputs associated with the active video input.
- If using a converter, check whether it carries audio over HDMI or requires a separate audio connection.
- Test the television with another source on the same input to rule out a muted or disabled input.
Sound without picture
- Verify the video plug or component channels and ensure that component channels are connected to the matching color labels.
- Check whether the converter supports the PS2’s regional signal and output mode.
- Try the television’s original-aspect or standard picture mode rather than a zoom mode that can hide the image.
Intermittent or unstable HDMI output
- Use the converter’s supplied power arrangement and avoid powering it from an underpowered USB port.
- Try a different HDMI input and a shorter known-good HDMI cable.
- Check the converter’s current documentation for supported resolutions and signal formats; do not assume that a generic HDMI label means universal PS2 support.
Which method should you choose?
- Choose a direct composite connection when the television has the matching analog input and simplicity matters more than adding equipment.
- Choose component when the television or an existing scaler accepts component and your console family matches a compatible cable such as SCPH-10490 or SCPH-10100.
- Choose an HDMI converter or scaler when the television has no usable analog input. Compare the device’s documented signal support, audio routing, aspect controls and latency information rather than relying on the category name.
- Choose a supported PS3 only after confirming the exact PS3 model and game, because disc support is limited and behavior can vary.
- Choose PCSX2 when computer emulation is acceptable and you have a DVD/CD optical drive. Direct-disc play is possible, while a disc image may be more practical according to PCSX2’s documentation.
The original-hardware route is therefore determined first by the television’s inputs, then by the cable and any required conversion. The PS3 and PCSX2 routes are alternatives for readers who can accept different hardware or emulation, with compatibility checks required in both cases.
