For a home reading at a particular moment, use a blood glucose meter with a compatible test strip and a fingerstick sample. For ongoing readings and trends, ask a health professional whether a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is appropriate. An A1C test measures a longer-term average; it cannot tell you your glucose right now. In the U.S., the FDA says it has not authorized, cleared, or approved a smartwatch or smart ring that measures or estimates glucose on its own.
What can you use instead of a smartwatch glucose sensor?
| Method | What it tells you | Main tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Fingerstick blood glucose meter | A point-in-time glucose measurement from a blood drop on a test strip. | Requires a fingerstick and strips compatible with the meter. Follow the testing frequency recommended by your health care professional. |
| Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) | Ongoing readings and trends from a sensor that measures glucose under or implanted in the skin. A compatible phone, receiver, or other device displays the readings. | Sensor placement, wear time, calibration, indications, and when to confirm with a blood meter vary by system. Follow that device’s labeling and clinical guidance. |
| A1C blood test | An estimate of average blood glucose over about three months. | It does not show sudden or temporary highs and lows and is not a real-time substitute for a meter or CGM. |
| Watch or ring claiming independent, noninvasive glucose measurement | No FDA-authorized independent measurement of this kind, according to the agency’s February 21, 2024 safety communication. | Do not use its claimed glucose reading for care or medication decisions. A watch app that displays readings from an authorized glucose device is different. |
Are smartwatch blood sugar readings accurate?
Do not rely on a smartwatch or smart ring that claims to measure glucose by itself, without a sensor that pierces the skin. The FDA warns that inaccurate readings could lead people to make unsafe diabetes treatment decisions. Its February 21, 2024 safety communication states: “The FDA has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring that is intended to measure or estimate blood glucose values on its own.” FDA safety communication

This warning does not mean a watch cannot be part of a glucose-monitoring setup. Some authorized glucose devices send readings to a compatible app that can appear on a phone or watch. In that case, the glucose sensor is the medical device; the watch is a display. Check the specific device’s current authorization, intended users, labeling, and instructions for treatment decisions.

How to check blood sugar at home with a meter
A blood glucose meter system consists of a handheld meter and compatible test strips. For a typical test, a lancet helps obtain a small blood drop, which is applied to a disposable strip inserted into the meter. The meter displays a reading for that point in time. - 7 Seconds And 0.7µl Blood: This blood glucose meter kit just needs 0.7 microliter blood sample and 7 seconds to get you blood glucose value; Fast, minimizes wound and less painful
- More Clearly Glucose Trend: 4 modes to record your glucose value according to different time, shows your glucose trend more clearly; 450 blood sugar values storage, continuous 14/21/28/60/90 day average, which brings more convenient Diabetes management for you and your health provider
- User-friendly for The Aged: 4 reminder alarms could be set everyday to remind the aged to do a test in time, considerate; the display is larger than most glucose monitors, showing the results more clearly, easier to read for the aged
- Check compatibility. Use strips made for your meter and follow the device’s instructions. If testing in the U.S., FDA advises using new, unopened strips authorized for sale in the United States; do not use previously owned strips.
- Prepare correctly. Read the meter instructions. Wash and dry your hands before testing, and store the meter and strips as directed.
- Take and read the sample. Follow the meter’s steps for using the lancet, applying the drop to the strip, and reading the result. If a result seems inconsistent with how you feel, follow your device instructions and clinical advice rather than assuming it is correct.
- Follow a clinician’s testing plan. The appropriate frequency depends on your circumstances. An over-the-counter meter is not a diabetes diagnostic test; consult a health professional for diagnosis or advice about symptoms.
What to compare when choosing a meter
Ask a health professional for help selecting a meter. FDA suggests weighing accuracy, the blood sample size needed, ease and speed of testing, size, data storage or transmission, possible medication or supplement interference, manufacturer support, and the cost of both the meter and its recurring strips. A low meter price alone does not show whether its strips are compatible or a suitable choice.
When to use a fingertip rather than another sampling site
Some meters allow samples from the palm or forearm. FDA cautions that these readings may be less accurate when glucose is changing rapidly. It recommends a fingertip sample when low glucose is suspected, after recent food or exercise, during stress or illness, after recent insulin, or when a result does not match how you feel. FDA also says not to use alternative-site readings to calibrate a CGM or calculate insulin doses. Follow current meter labeling and your clinician’s instructions. When a CGM may fit better than spot checks
A CGM uses a sensor under or implanted in the skin to provide ongoing glucose readings and trends. Depending on the system, it may send data to a phone or receiver. It is not the same as a watch independently estimating glucose: the under-skin sensor is doing the measurement.

For example, the FDA’s March 29, 2023 approval notice for the Eversense E3 described an implanted sensor with an external transmitter and app, readings transmitted every five minutes, and required fingertip meter calibrations. The notice described up to 180 days of wear for that Eversense E3 version; those details should not be generalized to all CGMs. FDA Eversense E3 approval notice
What A1C can—and cannot—tell you
An A1C blood test reflects average blood glucose over approximately the past three months, which can help with diabetes diagnosis and management when used and interpreted appropriately. It does not show short-lived increases or decreases and cannot answer what your glucose is at this moment. NIDDK: The A1C Test & Diabetes

A meter reading is also not, by itself, a diagnosis. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases says over-the-counter equipment such as a glucose meter cannot diagnose diabetes; diagnosis uses appropriate tests and interpretation by health professionals. If you are concerned about diabetes or symptoms, contact a health professional for testing advice. NIDDK: Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis

The useful choice depends on what information you need and what your clinician recommends. Consider whether you need point-in-time checks or ongoing trends, whether you can manage fingersticks or a skin sensor, whether alarms or data sharing matter, how often readings are expected, and what the specific device requires for calibration or confirmation. Include recurring supplies in the cost, not just the initial device price.
