Burlington is an off-price retailer rather than a chain that relies on one predictable annual clearance event. Its buyers purchase in-season and opportunistically, and the company says it can shift purchases between suppliers and categories as market conditions change. That creates a constantly changing assortment: a store may receive a strong shipment in one department while another location has very different sizes, colors or brands.

Clearance is an additional reduction on an item already priced through Burlington’s off-price model. A clearance ticket can be attractive, but the lowest ticket is not automatically the best purchase if the size is wrong, a component is missing or the item is damaged. Treat each unit as an individual deal.

Save the store addresses and hours for two or three practical locations if you have them. A second nearby store can have a better assortment even when the same department appears picked over at the first location. Do not assume an item shown online can be reserved for pickup unless the site explicitly offers that option for the item and store.
Make a targeted list, not a single-item mission
Write down the category, acceptable colors, minimum condition and maximum price before shopping. Add substitutes for sizes and styles. Burlington carries women’s, men’s, youth and baby apparel, footwear, accessories, beauty, home, toys, gifts and coats, so a flexible list lets you use the trip efficiently when one rack is thin.

For example, someone looking for a winter coat can check coats first, then outerwear-related racks, accessories and adjacent seasonal clearance. This is not a guarantee that the same item is stocked elsewhere; it is a way to avoid leaving after checking only one sign or endcap.
Use the early-shopping and repeat-visit trade-off
Shop early when selection matters
Burlington’s own deal guidance says, “Shop early in stores for the best values and selections.” Early shopping generally gives you more sizes, colors and complete sets. It is the better choice for a fixed event date, school uniform, coordinated outfit or a specific coat size, because waiting can eliminate the exact version you need.
Wait when the lowest possible ticket matters more

- First visit: shop while the season is active, identify acceptable items and buy necessities whose sizes or specifications are difficult to replace.
- Second visit: return later for discretionary additions or a lower price, accepting that selection may be narrower.
- Stop rule: if the item meets your list and budget and replacement risk is high, buy it rather than treating a possible future markdown as certain.
Search the whole store, not just the clearance rack
Begin with marked clearance racks and endcaps, then scan the full department. A clearance rack can contain the most visible reductions, while a regular rack may contain a better size, color or complete set at Burlington’s already discounted price. Compare the same category in nearby departments instead of assuming a sign applies to every unit.

Apparel and coats
Check women’s, men’s, youth and baby sections separately. Look at both the clearance rail and the active-season racks, and compare matching pieces when buying separates. For coats, inspect zippers, snaps, lining, pockets and hood attachments; a low ticket is not a value if a functional part is missing.
Footwear and accessories
Check both shoes and adjacent accessories for matching sizes, colors or practical substitutes. Examine soles, fasteners and display wear. Verify that both shoes are the same model and size, and that removable inserts or straps are present.
Beauty, home, toys and gifts
Inspect seals, expiration information where applicable, packaging and included components. For home goods, open the package when store policy permits and confirm that hardware, lids, cables or instructions are included. For toys and gifts, check that boxes are not heavily damaged and that all pieces are present before paying.

- Read every ticket: confirm the current Burlington price and whether a second markdown is actually reflected.
- Compare sizes and colors: one color or size may have a different ticket, especially on clearance.
- Check condition: inspect seams, stains, scratches, broken seals and missing parts.
- Confirm the set: count pieces and verify that accessories, labels and packaging belong to the item.

- Enter with your list and budget. Decide which needs are urgent and which purchases can wait for a later markdown.
- Go to the target department first. Check clearance racks, endcaps and regular racks in the same category.
