The most reliable way to reduce dependence on AI stocks and mega-cap technology is to diversify both across asset classes and within equities. A practical mix can include non-U.S. developed and emerging-market stocks, U.S. value and small-cap shares, high-quality bonds or Treasuries, and—only when appropriate—real estate or commodities. Start by measuring your existing exposure, choose additions that address the actual concentration, and use a written rebalancing rule instead of chasing whichever market segment recently performed best.

Why a portfolio can look diversified while still depending on mega-cap technology

Diversification means spreading money among different investments and asset categories so that one company, industry, country or economic outcome cannot determine the result. The SEC’s Investor.gov describes diversification as a way to reduce risk, but it also warns that a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund is not necessarily diversified when it is narrowly focused, such as on one industry sector.

That warning matters when a portfolio owns several funds that appear different but share the same largest holdings. A broad U.S. index fund, a growth fund, an AI-themed fund and a technology-sector fund may all hold many of the same mega-cap companies. The number of funds is not the same as the number of independent risk drivers.

Concentration can also arise inside a target-date or balanced fund. Such products generally hold stock, bond and other funds, but their equity allocation, underlying indexes and largest positions still determine how much technology exposure you actually have. Read the holdings and the glide path rather than relying on the product label.

What “diversifying away” should mean

Reducing concentration does not require selling every technology company or predicting the next winning sector. It means making the portfolio less dependent on a single combination of large U.S. growth companies, high valuations, advertising and cloud spending, semiconductor demand, artificial-intelligence investment and the interest-rate environment that supports long-duration growth stocks.

The objective is a collection of assets whose return and risk drivers are not identical. No mix eliminates losses. International shares can fall with U.S. shares, bonds can lose value when rates rise, and real assets can be volatile. Diversification is risk management, not a guarantee of profit.

Start with an exposure audit before buying anything

Write down every account and fund, then look through each fund’s latest portfolio. Record the percentage invested in U.S. large-cap growth, the largest individual holdings, sector weights, non-U.S. exposure, bond duration and credit quality. Add positions across accounts; a technology-heavy workplace plan can offset a seemingly diversified brokerage account.

  1. List direct holdings. Include individual shares, company stock, options and concentrated positions acquired through employment.
  2. Open each fund’s holdings file. Note its top ten positions, sector breakdown, country allocation and the index it tracks. Two funds with different names may use substantially overlapping holdings.
  3. Separate asset classes. Classify each position as U.S. equity, non-U.S. equity, government bond, corporate bond, cash or cash equivalent, real estate, commodity or another category.
  4. Identify the dominant risk. Decide whether the problem is one company, U.S. large-cap growth, the technology sector, equities generally, long bond duration, low credit quality or a lack of geographic exposure.
  5. Set a target policy. Base the mix on your goal, time horizon, ability to withstand losses and need for income. Official investor guidance does not establish one universal allocation for everyone.

Do this analysis before selecting a replacement fund. Otherwise, you can purchase another product that quietly increases the same exposure you intended to reduce.

1. Add non-U.S. developed and emerging-market equities

International shares broaden exposure beyond the U.S. economy and its largest technology companies. Developed markets add companies in financials, industrials, health care, consumer goods and other sectors, while emerging markets can add different demographic, commodity and economic drivers. A broad international fund is usually more diversified than selecting a single foreign country or theme.

What this route can improve

  • Dependence on U.S. mega-cap technology valuations and earnings.
  • Exposure to only one country’s monetary policy, regulation and economic cycle.
  • Sector concentration created by the market-cap structure of U.S. indexes.

Risks that remain

International investing introduces currency movements, country-specific regulation, political risk, different accounting standards, settlement practices and sometimes lower liquidity. Emerging markets can be especially volatile. A falling U.S. dollar can help unhedged foreign returns, while a rising dollar can reduce them for a U.S.-based investor. These outcomes are uncertain, so geographic diversification should be sized to your risk tolerance and time horizon.

How past performance should be read

Vanguard reported that $100 invested in U.S. stocks 10 years earlier would have grown to $334 by the end of 2024, an annualized 13% return, compared with $160, an annualized 5% return, for a similar investment in non-U.S. stocks. That is a historical comparison, not a forecast or a reason to abandon international exposure. The period happened to favor U.S. stocks; future leadership can differ.

2. Tilt toward value stocks and smaller companies

Broad total-market funds include small and mid-sized companies, but their market-cap weighting still gives the largest companies the greatest influence. A deliberate small-cap, small-cap-value or broader value allocation can counterbalance a portfolio dominated by large growth shares.

Value exposure

Value indexes typically emphasize companies that appear less expensive relative to measures such as earnings, book value or cash flow. Their sector mix can differ materially from a growth-heavy index, often increasing exposure to financials, industrials, energy or consumer businesses. Valuation measures are not a guarantee: a stock can be cheap because its earnings are deteriorating, and value funds can lag growth funds for long periods.

Small-cap exposure

Smaller companies may benefit from domestic economic growth and can have less representation in mega-cap technology indexes. They also tend to have greater business, financing and liquidity risk. Compare profitability, debt, sector concentration, trading spreads and fees before adding a small-cap fund. A small-cap fund concentrated in unprofitable biotechnology or another narrow industry may not provide the diversification you expect.

Questions to compare before choosing a tilt

Factor Why it matters
Market-cap range Shows whether the fund is genuinely small or simply another large-cap portfolio.
Value methodology Different indexes use different valuation and profitability screens, producing different sector mixes.
Profitability and balance sheet Helps distinguish a diversified value allocation from a collection of financially distressed companies.
Liquidity Lower trading volume can widen spreads and increase transaction costs, especially in stressed markets.
Expense ratio and turnover Higher operating costs and trading activity reduce returns and may create taxable distributions.

3. Use high-quality bonds and Treasuries

Bonds can supply income and a risk source different from common stocks. The SEC lists U.S. Treasury securities, corporate and municipal bonds, bond funds and money-market funds among common investment choices. For a portfolio concentrated in volatile equities, high-quality government bonds or a diversified investment-grade bond fund can provide ballast and a planned source of liquidity.

Match duration to the job the bonds must perform

Duration measures sensitivity to interest-rate changes. Shorter-duration bonds generally fluctuate less when rates move but reinvest sooner and may offer less income. Longer-duration bonds can provide stronger diversification when rates fall, yet they can decline sharply when rates rise. Choose duration according to when the money is needed, not solely according to the highest current yield.

Check credit quality

High-yield bonds can behave more like equities during an economic downturn because default risk and credit spreads rise. If the goal is to offset a technology-heavy stock allocation, replacing it with lower-quality credit may not deliver the desired protection. Review the fund’s average credit rating, maturity distribution, duration and exposure to government, corporate or municipal issuers.

Individual bonds versus bond funds

An individual Treasury or bond held to maturity has a stated maturity date and payment schedule, subject to issuer and market risks. A bond fund continuously buys and sells securities, so its share price and duration change over time. Neither structure is automatically safer; the appropriate choice depends on liquidity needs, account type, tax considerations and the ability to hold through price fluctuations.

4. Consider real estate and commodities selectively

The SEC identifies real estate, precious metals and other commodities as additional asset categories. These can diversify equity risk, but they are optional sleeves rather than requirements for every investor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Real estate

Public real-estate securities can add exposure to property income and real-estate operating companies. They remain equity investments and can be sensitive to interest rates, financing conditions and property values. A narrow real-estate fund may also concentrate in a few property types, such as offices, apartments or data centers. Review geographic and property-sector exposure, leverage, fees and liquidity.

Commodities and precious metals

Commodity prices respond to supply disruptions, weather, inventories, geopolitics and economic growth rather than company earnings. They may diversify stocks in some periods but can produce no income and experience large price swings. Futures-based products add roll costs and complexity; physically backed products can have storage, insurance or management fees. Understand the structure and tax treatment before investing.

5. Use a broad allocation or target-date fund when simplicity matters

A broad allocation fund can combine U.S. and international stocks with bonds in one product. A target-date fund changes its mix over time, usually becoming more conservative as the selected retirement year approaches. The SEC’s March 25, 2025 Target Date Funds bulletin emphasizes that these funds hold mixes of stock, bond and other funds and that their investment mix changes over time.

What to inspect

  • Glide path: Determine when the fund reduces equities, how far the reduction goes and whether the conservative endpoint is reached at the target date or years afterward.
  • Retirement-date assumptions: Two funds with the same year can assume different withdrawal patterns and longevity risks.
  • Equity percentage: A target-date fund may still hold a substantial stock allocation near retirement, including significant U.S. large-cap exposure.
  • Underlying holdings: Check for overlap among the fund’s component funds and for duplicated technology exposure.
  • Total cost: Consider the fund’s expense ratio plus the expenses of underlying funds, as well as trading costs and account fees.

One-fund simplicity is valuable only when the portfolio’s risk matches your objective. A target-date label does not replace reading the prospectus, holdings and glide-path chart.

How the main diversification choices compare

Route Primary diversification benefit Main risks to evaluate Best used when
Non-U.S. developed stocks Country and sector exposure beyond the U.S. Currency, political, regulatory and valuation differences You want geographic breadth and can tolerate periods of relative underperformance
Emerging-market stocks Exposure to different growth and demographic drivers Higher volatility, liquidity, currency and political risk Your horizon is long and you can withstand larger drawdowns
U.S. value stocks Less reliance on large-cap growth valuations Value traps, cyclical sectors and prolonged lagging performance You want a deliberate style counterweight
U.S. small-cap stocks More exposure to smaller businesses and domestic drivers Business failures, financing risk and lower liquidity You accept higher equity volatility for broader capitalization exposure
High-quality bonds or Treasuries Income and a different risk source from equities Interest-rate, inflation and duration risk You need stability, income or money for a nearer-term goal
Real estate Property-related income and asset exposure Rate sensitivity, leverage, sector concentration and liquidity You understand the structure and want a limited real-asset sleeve
Commodities or precious metals Exposure to supply, inflation and geopolitical shocks No inherent income, sharp volatility, roll or storage costs You have a specific diversification rationale and can accept unpredictability
Target-date or broad allocation fund Automatic multi-asset implementation Glide-path mismatch, overlap, fees and residual tech concentration You prioritize simplicity and will still review the holdings

Build the allocation without guessing a universal percentage

There is no evidence-based percentage that suits every investor outside technology. A person saving for a home in three years, a worker with a secure pension and a retiree drawing monthly income have different capacities for loss. Use a decision sequence instead of copying an allocation from a chart.

  1. Define the goal and date. Separate money needed soon from money that can remain invested for decades.
  2. Set a tolerable loss. Consider how much decline you could endure without selling at the worst time.
  3. Protect near-term spending. Keep cash or short-duration, high-quality instruments for expenses that cannot wait for a market recovery.
  4. Choose the equity breadth. Combine U.S. exposure with non-U.S. markets and, if appropriate, value or small-cap allocations rather than adding more overlapping growth funds.
  5. Add fixed income deliberately. Select duration and credit quality to match the purpose of the bond allocation.
  6. Use optional sleeves sparingly. Real estate and commodities should solve a clear diversification problem, not fill a quota.
  7. Document the policy. Record target ranges, the account used for each asset and the rule that will trigger a rebalance.

Rebalance as a risk-control process

Investor.gov describes rebalancing as restoring a portfolio to its target mix after market movements change the weights. Vanguard President and Chief Investment Officer Greg Davis wrote on March 26, 2024: “The speed at which the landscape changed, as central banks attacked inflation with higher interest rates, serves as a strong reminder of why investors need to resist the temptation to chase performance and why portfolio diversification remains as important as ever.”

A practical rule can use a calendar review, percentage bands around each target, or both. When one asset grows beyond its permitted range, direct new contributions toward underweight holdings first; selling may be appropriate when contributions cannot restore the mix. In taxable accounts, weigh capital-gains consequences and transaction costs before selling. In retirement accounts, exchanges may be simpler, but fund availability and plan rules still matter.

What not to do

  • Do not sell an entire asset class solely because it recently lagged.
  • Do not increase a position simply because it was the best performer last year.
  • Do not rebalance so frequently that taxes, spreads and commissions overwhelm the risk-control benefit.
  • Do not change the target every time headlines predict a new technology boom or bust.

Fees, taxes and account location can change the best choice

Compare expense ratios, bid-ask spreads, turnover, trading commissions where applicable and any platform or advisory fee. A cheaper fund is not automatically better if it has a different index, less liquidity or unwanted concentration, but costs compound over long periods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and account type. In a taxable account, selling appreciated technology shares can create capital gains, while some bond interest, real-estate distributions and commodity structures have different tax characteristics. In tax-advantaged accounts, the immediate tax impact may differ, but withdrawal rules still apply. Use current fund documents or qualified tax advice for a decision involving a large gain or retirement account.

A decision framework for common situations

If several funds all own the same mega-cap companies

Consolidate overlapping holdings, then add the missing asset class or geography. Replacing one technology fund with another technology fund changes the label, not the risk.

If you want less dependence on the U.S. market

Review a broad non-U.S. allocation that includes developed and, if suitable, emerging markets. Accept that currency and country risks can produce long periods of underperformance.

If your portfolio is all equities and you need money within a few years

Prioritize cash reserves and high-quality, duration-appropriate bonds for the near-term goal. A value or international tilt does not solve the problem of having too much total equity risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are uncomfortable with a large technology gain

Measure the tax cost of selling, set a maximum position or sector range, and redirect new contributions before making a large taxable transaction. A written rule can reduce the temptation to make an all-or-nothing market call.

If you use a target-date fund

Compare its glide path, equity level, fees and underlying holdings with your actual retirement date and risk capacity. If the fund already supplies the desired diversification, adding several overlapping funds can make the portfolio less clear rather than more diversified.

Common mistakes that undermine diversification

  • Counting funds instead of exposures: Five products can share the same top holdings.
  • Confusing a broad label with a broad portfolio: “Market,” “balanced” or “global” does not reveal the actual weights.
  • Replacing stock concentration with bond concentration: A single long-duration or low-quality bond fund can be volatile.
  • Ignoring liquidity: Small-cap, emerging-market, real-estate and commodity products may trade less smoothly in stressed markets.
  • Chasing recent returns: Past leadership, including the strong U.S. performance through 2024, is not a forecast.
  • Forgetting employer stock: Your salary and portfolio may already depend on the same company or industry.
  • Rebalancing without a plan: Emotional selling and buying can turn diversification into performance chasing.

Bottom line

To diversify beyond AI stocks and mega-cap technology, first uncover overlap, then add the exposures your portfolio lacks: international equities for geography, value and small-cap stocks for market breadth, high-quality bonds or Treasuries for a different risk source, and optional real assets only when their risks fit your plan. Broad and target-date funds can simplify the job, but their holdings, fees and glide paths still require inspection. Keep the allocation tied to your goal and risk capacity, and rebalance by rule rather than by recent performance.
