The safest display is a well-fitted enclosed case on an interior wall, positioned away from windows, vents, radiators, heat-producing electronics and high-traffic doorways. Use a case whose acrylic or glass has a documented UV-filtering rating, not merely a clear finish; illuminate it with low-heat LEDs; leave clearance around fragile parts; and remove loose dust with a soft brush before wiping any surface. This combination limits airborne grit, accidental contact, ultraviolet exposure and heat without making routine care difficult.
What actually threatens a scale figure
Dust is abrasive and difficult to remove from details
Scale figures collect dust on hair sculpting, clothing folds, faces, bases and weapon tips. Dust also settles on the inside of a display cover, where it can be redistributed whenever the door or lid moves. An enclosed case with doors or flush panels keeps most airborne dust out and reduces handling. Open shelves leave the figure exposed to room dust, pet hair, carpet fibers and particles from cooking, so they demand more frequent gentle cleaning.

Dust itself is not the only problem. Rubbing a dry cloth across gritty particles can drag those particles over painted PVC or a clear acrylic cover. The correct sequence is to lift loose material with a soft brush or carefully controlled air, then wipe a surface only after grit has been removed.

The Zenpai Association’s guide, dated September 6, 2026, links prolonged sunlight with paint fading, discoloration, yellowing and uneven color changes. HD Toys Japan likewise warns that painted PVC and ABS scale figures can yellow in sunlight and sag when exposed to heat. The practical conclusion is simple: a sunbeam falling on the figure is an avoidable risk, even when the room looks comfortable.

Heat and humidity affect the case as well as the figure
Heat can soften or deform some plastics and can make an unsupported pose change over time. Impact Visual Arts’ acrylic-artwork guidance flags interior temperatures above 80°F (26.7°C) or relative humidity above approximately 60% as conditions that could damage acrylic artwork over time. Those figures are care guidance for acrylic art, not a universal storage limit for every anime figure, but they are useful warning thresholds for a hot or damp display room. Keep the case away from radiators, heating vents, direct sun and electronics that release substantial heat.

Place the display safely: a step-by-step setup
- Map the room. Identify windows, skylights, heating and cooling vents, radiators, hot electronics and doorways where a case could be bumped. The preferred location is an interior wall that receives no direct beam of sunlight.
- Eliminate the hottest positions. Do not put a case above a receiver, game console, amplifier or other device that continuously vents heat. A cool room is preferable to a warm alcove, even if the alcove looks visually convenient.
- Measure the complete figure. Measure the base, highest hair or accessory, weapon reach and any dynamic overhang. Compare those measurements with the case’s internal dimensions, not its external marketing dimensions. Leave clearance so a door, lid or shelf cannot touch a part when the case is closed.
- Check the supporting surface. Level the shelf or cabinet before placing the base. Confirm the case’s stated load capacity and the shelf’s own limit, especially when several resin or large-scale pieces share one level.
- Stabilize the pose. Make sure the base sits flat and the figure is not leaning. Use the supplied peg or base support for heavy overhangs, long weapons or elevated poses; do not improvise a point support that presses on painted parts.
- Set the enclosure. Close doors or panels fully and inspect for obvious gaps. A flush, well-fitted cover reduces dust entry more effectively than a loosely placed lid. If the case has ventilation openings, keep them clear rather than sealing them with tape.
- Plan access before filling it. Leave enough room to remove the figure by its base without catching hair, wings or weapons on the cover. A display that requires pulling on a delicate part will eventually cause damage.
How to verify UV protection
Transparency says nothing by itself about ultraviolet filtering. The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies ultraviolet light as the portion of the spectrum most damaging to works of art and explains that UV-absorbing plastic can filter it from glazing and display cases. Display Armour likewise cautions that performance depends on the material’s UV resistance and the complete case design, not simply on whether the panel is clear.
What to look for in a listing or specification sheet
- An explicit statement that the acrylic or glass filters UV, rather than a generic claim such as “crystal clear.”
- The stated UV-wavelength range or transmission rating, if the manufacturer provides one.
- Whether the rating applies to the panel material only or to the assembled case, including doors, seams and top panels.
- Dimensions that keep the figure away from the panel and allow the cover to close without contact.
- Ventilation details and the maximum supported load.
If a listing does not state a UV specification, treat the panel as unverified. A clear acrylic cube can still allow damaging ultraviolet energy through. For an existing glass cabinet, a tested UV-blocking window or cabinet film can add protection, but it does not remove the need to keep the display out of a direct sunbeam.

Acrylic versus glass
Acrylic is light and practical for a desk case, but it scratches more easily and can build static that attracts dust. Use a cleaner specifically marked as compatible with acrylic. Glass is heavier and can provide a substantial cabinet door, yet ordinary glass should not be assumed to block enough UV for a bright room. In either material, the seal, door fit and documented rating matter as much as the transparent panel.
Design the interior around the figure
Keep parts from touching
Arrange figures so hair, swords, ribbons, capes and translucent effects do not rest against another figure or the case wall. Contact points trap dust and make removal risky. Give each base a clear path to the front or top opening so routine cleaning does not require reaching across another pose.
Support overhangs with the supplied hardware
Large accessories and raised limbs create leverage on the ankle, wrist or torso. Use the manufacturer-supplied peg, brace or base connection where provided. Recheck the pose whenever the figure is moved; a small lean is a reason to stop and correct the support rather than leave it to settle.

Respect load and ventilation ratings
Do not stack cases or add glass shelves beyond the stated capacity. A crowded case also limits air movement and makes dust inspection difficult. Follow the case maker’s ventilation design, keeping vents unobstructed while still closing the main panels.

Low-heat LED cabinet lights are the sensible default. AKiBATO and related display-care guidance recommend LEDs instead of halogen, whose heat can raise the temperature around a figure and its enclosure. Mount or position LEDs so they illuminate the scene without touching the figure, acrylic or wiring. If a light source makes the panel noticeably warm, relocate it or reduce its operating time. Lighting cannot compensate for a case placed in a sunbeam; it should be treated as a visibility feature after the location and UV strategy are correct.
Clean figures and acrylic without causing scratches
Use a routine that matches the room
Inspect a closed case weekly to biweekly and adjust the interval to the room’s dust load. Open shelves, homes with pets or carpet, and rooms near cooking generally need more frequent attention. On an open shelf, use a soft makeup-style detailing brush or feather duster. In a case, dust the figure and wipe the exterior panel while the door is open, then close it promptly.

Dust the figure first
- Wash and dry your hands so skin oils do not transfer to painted surfaces.
- Remove the figure’s loose accessories only if the manufacturer designed them to detach safely; otherwise clean around them in place.
- Use a clean, very soft brush to lift dust from the base upward, working from broad surfaces toward recesses. Hold the figure by its base, not by hair, weapon or projecting limb.
- If you use air, keep it gentle and carefully directed. A forceful blast can drive grit into joints, dislodge a small part or spin a loose accessory.
- Inspect under the chin, behind hair, between fingers and around the base before deciding that the cleaning is complete.
Wipe acrylic only after loose grit is gone
Impact Visual Arts advises removing loose debris first, then using a soft microfiber cloth and a plastic cleaner compatible with acrylic. Never use ammonia-based glass cleaner or ordinary glass cleaner on acrylic; the product can fog or otherwise damage the plastic. Apply cleaner to the cloth rather than flooding seams, vents or electrical components. Use a second dry microfiber cloth to remove residue, with light pressure.
What not to do
- Do not dry-wipe a visibly gritty panel.
- Do not use paper towels, abrasive pads, powdered cleaners or household ammonia on acrylic.
- Do not spray liquid directly onto a figure, base decal, joint or case seam.
- Do not polish painted PVC as though it were bare automotive plastic; a shiny finish can change the appearance of the paint.
Handle, move and inspect the display
Every placement change is a maintenance check. Confirm that the base is level, the figure is upright, delicate hair and weapon parts are supported, and no accessory has shifted into the door path. When a case must be moved, remove the figure first if its pose or height makes the enclosure awkward to carry. Keep the cover closed during room-to-room transport so dust and accidental contact do not reach the figure, and never lift a loaded case by a thin lid or removable panel.
Control the room around the case
- Sun: Keep the display outside direct beams. If relocation is impossible, use curtains or a tested UV-blocking film as an additional layer, not as permission to leave the figure in direct sun.
- Heat: Separate the case from radiators, vents and heat-emitting electronics. Watch for a warm top panel or a figure that begins to lean.
- Humidity: Use the approximately 60% relative-humidity warning from acrylic-artwork care as a reason to improve a persistently damp room, while remembering it is not a universal anime-figure limit.
- Traffic: Avoid door swings, narrow walkways and shelves that people regularly brush against.
- Airborne contamination: Keep the display away from cooking vapors, smoking and dusty work areas; these environments shorten the interval between cleanings.

Choose a fitted acrylic cube with an explicit UV-filtering claim, enough internal clearance for the tallest accessory and a stable base. Keep it on an interior wall rather than beside the monitor, console or a sunny window. A soft detailing brush and microfiber cloth cover most routine maintenance.

Several figures in one room
A glass-door cabinet provides more capacity and easier grouping than many small cubes. Check each shelf’s load rating, inspect door gaps and select UV-rated glazing or add a tested film if the room is bright. Arrange bases so every figure can be removed without reaching through another pose.
A large collection on open shelving
Open shelves are workable when access and capacity matter more than dust protection. Keep them away from windows and vents, schedule frequent brush cleaning and use curtains or UV-blocking film for nearby glazing. Treat every shelf as an exposed display, not as a case.
A display that must remain near a window
Use a well-fitted custom case with documented UV-filtering acrylic or glass, then add curtains or tested film to reduce the room’s incoming light. Leave ventilation clear and monitor heat; UV treatment does not make a hot, sunlit position safe by itself.
