If you only want price exposure and do not need to withdraw coins, a regulated securities brokerage that offers a spot-bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) can remove much of the wallet and private-key work. If you want to own bitcoin that can be sent to a wallet, a carefully vetted exchange offers more control but also more responsibility. A Bitcoin ATM is a cash-access option, not a safety shortcut; an unsolicited demand to use one is a strong scam signal.
No route eliminates volatility, fraud, mistaken transfers, account takeover, or provider failure. Compare custody, legal protections, total costs, security controls, tax records, limits, and availability before placing an order.

Choose the route that matches your goal
These products are not interchangeable. An exchange account can hold actual bitcoin and may let you withdraw it on-chain. A spot-bitcoin ETP is a security held in a brokerage account and generally provides price exposure rather than control of spendable coins. An ATM converts cash into a bitcoin transfer, often at a higher and less transparent total cost.
| Route | What you receive | Custody and withdrawals | Protections and regulation | Costs to check | Best fit | Main risks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crypto exchange | Bitcoin recorded in an exchange account | Usually custodial at first; withdrawal to a personal wallet may be available under the provider’s rules | Registration or licensing varies by entity and jurisdiction. Non-security crypto may not have SIPC protection. | Trading fee, spread, deposit fee, withdrawal fee, and network fee | People who want direct ownership and possible on-chain transfers | Platform custody failure, account compromise, withdrawal limits, wrong-address transfers, and unclear legal entity |
| Brokerage with spot-bitcoin ETP | Shares of a securities product designed to track bitcoin | You hold shares in a securities account, not normally coins you can send to a wallet | Trades through a securities brokerage; account and product protections depend on the legal documents. Market losses are not insured. | ETP sponsor fee, bid-ask spread, brokerage commission if any, and account fees | Investors seeking simplified price exposure, statements, and tax reporting | Volatility, tracking differences, sponsor risk, market-hours limits, and inability to use the shares as bitcoin |
| Bitcoin ATM | A cash purchase that sends bitcoin to a specified wallet address | You must provide or create a wallet address; the operator controls the transaction interface | Operator licensing, identity checks, limits, and consumer recourse vary by location; exact requirements are provider-specific | Displayed exchange-rate markup, operator fee, network fee, and possible cash limits | A person who has a legitimate, voluntary need to use cash and has independently verified the operator | Impersonation scams, high fees, irreversible transfers, counterfeit interfaces, and limited dispute options |
Availability, purchase limits, settlement timing, and legal protections depend on your country, state, the exact legal entity, and the product’s current terms. Confirm those details before funding an account.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Using an exchange for direct bitcoin ownership
When an exchange is the right tool
An exchange is the most flexible of the three routes when you want bitcoin itself rather than a security that follows its price. You can usually buy a fractional amount, hold it on the platform, and—if withdrawals are enabled—send it to a wallet you control. That flexibility comes with operational duties: you must assess the provider, secure the account, understand the withdrawal process, and protect any wallet and recovery material you use.
Verify the provider before sending money
Start with the exact legal entity, not just a familiar trading name. In the United States, Investor.gov recommends checking a firm through the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure system, FINRA BrokerCheck, and relevant state regulators. Those checks help identify the entity and the rules that apply; registration does not make bitcoin safe or guarantee that you will avoid a loss. Outside the United States, use the financial regulator in your jurisdiction and confirm that the service is authorized to serve residents there.
- Open the provider’s official domain or app by typing it yourself or using a bookmark you created. Do not use a link or phone number supplied by an unsolicited caller, text, email, or social-media message.
- Read the legal-entity name, terms of service, custody disclosures, insurance or loss-protection language, and dispute channel.
- Check whether residents of your location may buy, hold, and withdraw bitcoin, and whether identity verification is required.
- Read the withdrawal policy: supported networks, minimums, processing windows, address allowlists, holds after a password change, and the way network fees are displayed.
- Confirm how the provider handles outages, stolen credentials, mistaken transfers, and account closure.
Step-by-step: a safer exchange purchase
- Open the account from an independently verified official app or website. Check the domain character by character and avoid search advertisements or messages that redirect you elsewhere.
- Confirm identity and jurisdiction. Match the legal entity in the account agreement with the regulator’s record and make sure the service is permitted where you live.
- Secure the account before depositing funds. Use a unique password, a passkey or authenticator-based two-factor authentication, device and login alerts, and a withdrawal allowlist if offered. Keep backup codes offline.
- Review the complete quote. Compare the displayed bitcoin price with a reference market price, then add the trading fee, spread, deposit charge, and any withdrawal or network charge. A fee labelled “zero” does not mean the trade has no spread.
- Fund with a small amount first. Confirm that the deposit arrived under the expected name and that the account shows the correct available balance.
- Place the order. Check the amount of bitcoin, the dollar total, the execution price, and every fee before confirming. Save the confirmation immediately.
- Decide where the bitcoin should remain. Leaving it on the exchange is convenient but leaves custody with the platform. Moving it to a personal wallet gives you control of the keys and the responsibility to back them up.
- If withdrawing, make a small test transfer. Copy the destination address only from the wallet you intend to use, verify it on a trusted device, check the network, and wait for confirmation before sending the remainder.
- Record the transaction. Keep the confirmation, dollar amount, fees, acquisition date, wallet address, and transaction ID in a format you can retrieve for tax reporting.
Custody: exchange-held versus self-custodied bitcoin
With exchange custody, the platform controls the private keys while your account records an entitlement to the bitcoin. You avoid seed-phrase management but depend on the provider’s solvency, security, withdrawal systems, and policies. Do not describe an exchange balance as FDIC- or SIPC-insured unless the provider’s legally applicable documents expressly say so. Non-security crypto assets may not receive SIPA protection, and protection for a brokerage account does not protect you from a fall in bitcoin’s price.
Self-custody changes the failure mode rather than removing risk. You control the private keys, but a lost or exposed recovery phrase can make the funds permanently inaccessible or stealable. Write the recovery phrase on paper or another durable offline medium, store it in a secure location, never share it, and never photograph or upload it. A hardware wallet can be considered only after you understand this responsibility and verify the device’s authenticity, security documentation, and compatibility.
Using a brokerage and a spot-bitcoin ETP
What you own
A spot-bitcoin ETP is a security traded in a brokerage account. Its objective is generally to reflect the price of bitcoin through bitcoin held by the product or another documented structure. You own shares of the ETP, not the underlying on-chain coins in a wallet you can spend. Most retail investors therefore cannot use an ETP share to pay someone, transfer it to a blockchain address, or recover it with a seed phrase. Read the prospectus for the exact redemption and custody terms.

In a September 9, 2024 Investor.gov bulletin, the SEC said spot bitcoin and ether ETPs “may provide exposure to those crypto assets without some of the direct risks to the investor of personally transacting on a crypto asset trading platform or using a crypto asset wallet and handling the public and private cryptographic keys.” That convenience does not make the investment conservative. The SEC also says investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments.
Why investors choose an ETP
- The account can sit alongside other securities, with familiar statements, order types, and year-end tax documents.
- You do not have to create a wallet, store a recovery phrase, or approve an on-chain withdrawal.
- A regulated securities account may provide clearer ownership records and a formal customer-service and dispute process than an unfamiliar crypto platform.
- You can buy during the exchange’s trading hours without managing blockchain network congestion.
Trade-offs to understand
- The share price can differ from the spot bitcoin price because of market demand, trading hours, liquidity, expenses, and tracking effects.
- The sponsor fee reduces the amount of bitcoin represented by each share over time. It is an ongoing product expense, even when your brokerage does not show a separate trade commission.
- Bid-ask spreads can be wider when the market is stressed or the product is thinly traded.
- You cannot assume that brokerage-account protections cover a decline in bitcoin, a product’s tracking error, or every type of operational loss. Read both the brokerage agreement and the ETP prospectus.
- Trading stops when the relevant securities market closes, while bitcoin itself trades continuously.
Step-by-step: buying an ETP
- Use a brokerage you can independently verify. Check the legal entity through the applicable securities regulator and read the account’s protection and custody disclosures.
- Read the ETP prospectus and fee schedule. Identify the sponsor fee, index or pricing methodology, custody arrangement, trading venue, risks, and whether individual shareholders can redeem for bitcoin. Do not rely solely on a product name.
- Check liquidity and the quoted spread. Compare the bid and ask, use a limit order when appropriate, and avoid assuming that a commission-free trade is free of all costs.
- Fund the securities account and place the order during market hours. Confirm the share quantity, order type, estimated dollar value, and execution before submitting.
- Save the trade confirmation and statements. Keep the purchase date, number of shares, price, commissions, and other fees for basis records.
- Monitor the product, not a wallet address. Review sponsor notices, prospectus updates, account alerts, and tax documents. An ETP position cannot be transferred to a personal bitcoin wallet unless the product’s documents explicitly provide that mechanism.
Bitcoin ATMs: cash convenience with a major scam warning
Why an unsolicited ATM instruction is dangerous
Bitcoin ATMs are a leading channel for impersonation fraud because a victim can be directed to insert cash and send bitcoin to an address controlled by the criminal. Transfers are usually irreversible, and the machine may provide little practical recourse after the transaction is confirmed.

The Federal Trade Commission reported more than $65 million in reported Bitcoin-ATM fraud losses in the first half of 2024. It also reported that losses rose nearly tenfold from 2020 to 2023 and exceeded $110 million in 2023. Government-impersonation, business-impersonation, and tech-support scams account for most reported Bitcoin-ATM losses.
“Don’t believe anyone who says you need to use a Bitcoin ATM, buy gift cards, or move money to protect it.”
Federal Trade Commission, 2024
Real businesses and government agencies will not require you to use a Bitcoin ATM to protect money, fix an account, pay a fine, or receive a refund. “Real businesses and government agencies will never do that – and anyone who asks is a scammer,” the FTC says.

If you independently decide to use an ATM
Use one only for a transaction you initiated yourself, after checking the operator through an independent source. Operator-specific fees, exchange-rate markups, identity requirements, limits, receipts, and supported networks were not established by the official sources available here, so inspect the machine and its terms before committing cash.

Do not trust a machine selected by a caller or a map link they sent. Check the operator’s legal name and customer-support channel independently.
- Inspect the quote before inserting cash. Record the bitcoin amount, exchange rate, operator surcharge, network fee, identity-verification requirement, and transaction limit shown on screen.
- Prepare your wallet first. Use a wallet you control, display its receive address on a trusted device, and confirm that the ATM supports the same network.
- Enter a small amount. Send a test purchase to the wallet, verify the address on the machine and your device, and keep the printed or electronic receipt.
- Confirm the transaction on-chain. Save the transaction ID and wait for confirmation. Never hand cash to a person who claims to be supervising the machine.
If a caller, pop-up, bank message, employer, police officer, tax official, or technical-support agent is directing the purchase, stop. Do not continue the conversation through the supplied number, and contact the supposed organization using a number from a statement or its independently typed official website.
Compare the real cost, not the advertised fee
The amount you pay is determined by the execution price plus every charge associated with acquiring and moving the bitcoin or ETP. Use this checklist for each route:
- Spread: the difference between the provider’s buy price and a reference market price, or between an ETP’s bid and ask.
- Trading or brokerage fee: a percentage, flat amount, or commission shown at order entry.
- Deposit and payment fee: a charge for bank transfer, card, cash, or another funding method.
- Withdrawal fee: an exchange’s charge for sending bitcoin out, which may be separate from the underlying network fee.
- Network fee: the blockchain transaction cost, which can vary with congestion and the chosen network.
- ATM surcharge: the machine operator’s fee and any exchange-rate markup, both of which should appear before confirmation.
- Ongoing ETP expense: the sponsor fee deducted within the product and reflected over time in the bitcoin represented by each share.
Ask for the exact dollar amount of bitcoin or shares you will receive after all disclosed charges. Keep a screenshot or receipt when the interface allows it. A low headline fee cannot compensate for a wide spread or an expensive withdrawal.
Security controls that matter whichever route you choose
Protect the account and device
- Use a unique password stored in a reputable password manager.
- Prefer a passkey or authenticator-based two-factor authentication over SMS where the provider supports it.
- Turn on login, device, trade, and withdrawal alerts.
- Enable a withdrawal allowlist and any required waiting period for a new address.
- Keep your phone, computer, browser, and wallet firmware updated, and avoid signing in on public or shared devices.
- Never give a support agent your password, one-time code, private key, or recovery phrase.
Verify every destination
Malware can replace a copied address, and scammers can create addresses that look similar to a legitimate one. Compare the first and last characters on the trusted wallet and the destination screen, verify the network, and send a small test amount. For a large transfer, pause and recheck the address on a separate trusted device before approving.

Separate convenience from control
Keeping bitcoin on an exchange is convenient but exposes you to platform and account risks. Self-custody removes the exchange from the signing process but makes you responsible for backups and key security. An ETP avoids both on-chain transfers and personal-key management, but it does not give you spendable bitcoin. Decide which failure you are better prepared to handle before buying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.United States tax reporting and recordkeeping
The IRS treats digital assets such as Bitcoin as property for federal tax purposes. Selling or exchanging Bitcoin can create a capital gain or loss, and the transaction must be reported whether or not a Form 1099-DA arrives. Buying establishes your tax basis; a later sale, exchange, or other taxable disposition requires the original cost and fee information.
For custodial brokers, gross-proceeds reporting applies to transactions effected on or after January 1, 2025. Basis reporting applies to certain transactions on or after January 1, 2026. These dates concern federal reporting rules for covered transactions; they do not transfer responsibility for calculating and reporting your taxable activity to the broker.
Keep a complete transaction file
- Trade confirmation and order number
- Acquisition date and time
- Dollar amount, bitcoin amount or ETP share count, execution price, and every fee
- Wallet address, network, and blockchain transaction ID for transfers
- Sale or exchange confirmation and the proceeds received
- Statements and any Form 1099-DA supplied by a custodian
- Notes explaining gifts, donations, swaps, or transfers between wallets
Broker-generated forms can omit activity, classify it incorrectly, or cover only transactions the broker is required to report. Keep the original confirmations and reconcile them with your own wallet history. For non-U.S. tax residents, use the rules and forms of your own jurisdiction.
Common failure modes and what to do
A withdrawal is delayed
Check the provider’s status page, identity-verification notices, withdrawal hold rules, and the blockchain transaction status. Do not pay a stranger who promises to “unlock” funds. Contact support only through the independently verified channel and preserve screenshots, case numbers, and receipts.

You sent bitcoin to the wrong address or network
Blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed by the sender. Contact the receiving service immediately if the address belongs to a custodial account; otherwise, recovery may be impossible. Never send a second payment to someone claiming it will recover the first.
Your account may be compromised
Use a trusted device to change the password, revoke active sessions and API keys, disable unfamiliar withdrawal addresses, contact the provider’s official fraud team, and notify your bank if a linked payment method was affected. Preserve evidence and report a confirmed scam to the appropriate authorities.
You lost a self-custody recovery phrase
There is no central reset process for a wallet’s private keys. Search your secure offline backups, but do not disclose the phrase to anyone offering recovery services. If the phrase may have been exposed, move funds to a newly created wallet using a clean device while you still control them.
A practical decision guide
- You want a simple long-term price position inside an investment account: compare spot-bitcoin ETPs at a verified brokerage, focusing on sponsor fee, spread, liquidity, prospectus terms, and tax documents.
- You want to send bitcoin, use a personal wallet, or control on-chain keys: use a verified exchange, then learn the withdrawal and self-custody process before transferring a meaningful amount.
- You only have cash and independently chose an ATM: verify the operator, read every fee and limit, use your own wallet, and start with a small test transaction.
- Someone else told you to buy immediately: do not buy. Pressure, secrecy, guaranteed returns, threats, or instructions to “protect” money are scam indicators.
- You are unsure which protections apply: identify the legal entity and jurisdiction first. If you cannot find clear registration, custody, fee, withdrawal, and dispute information, do not fund the account.
The safest purchase is the one whose custody, costs, legal status, security controls, and tax records you can explain before clicking Buy.
