Best Way to Host Multiple Static and CMS Websites on One VPS

The most reliable design is one VPS with Nginx or Apache listening publicly, a separate DNS record and name-based server block (or virtual host) for every domain, isolated roots and credentials for every site, and private application and database services behind the proxy. Serve static files directly; send CMS requests to PHP-FPM, Apache, or a container. Add HTTPS with Certbot, back up each site independently, and size the VPS from measured CPU, memory, storage-I/O, and concurrency rather than a guessed site count.

For this architecture, an Antihost VPS provides Linux virtual servers on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage, full root access, and 1 to 16 vCPUs with 2 to 64 GB of RAM. Antihost lists USA East, the Netherlands, and Ukraine for these self-managed VPS instances, with unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and L3/L4 DDoS protection.

What the architecture looks like

Several domains can point to the same public IPv4 or IPv6 address. When a browser connects, it sends the requested hostname in the HTTP Host header (and during TLS negotiation through SNI). The edge web server selects the matching configuration and serves that site’s files or forwards the request to the correct application.

Apache calls this a virtual host: its documentation defines the term as running more than one website on a single machine. Nginx uses the term server block. Both approaches are name-based hosting, so separate public IP addresses are normally unnecessary.

Layer Recommended responsibility Publicly reachable?
DNS An A record for IPv4 and, when configured, an AAAA record for IPv6 for every domain and subdomain DNS is public; it does not expose a service port
Nginx or Apache Terminates HTTP/HTTPS, chooses the site by hostname, serves static files, and proxies dynamic requests TCP 80 and 443 only
Static site roots HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and downloads for each static site Only through the proxy
CMS application PHP-FPM, Apache, or a container running the CMS code No direct public port
Database and cache One database and credentials per CMS where practical; private network access No direct public port
Operations Logs, backups, monitoring, deployment and restore tooling Administrative access should use a deliberate policy, preferably restricted by network or VPN

A typical request therefore travels through DNS, the edge proxy, and either a document root or an internal application service. Keeping those responsibilities separate makes it possible to add a new site without changing existing applications.

Choose Nginx, Apache, or a combination

Choice Best fit Important trade-off
Nginx at the edge Many static sites, reverse-proxying to PHP-FPM, Apache, or containers, and centrally managed configuration Nginx has no .htaccess equivalent; rewrite and access rules must be placed in administrator-controlled configuration
Apache at the edge CMS installations that depend on .htaccess, per-directory rules, or an Apache-focused workflow Proxying and configuration can be more involved when many independent application services are present
Nginx in front of Apache Sites that need Apache compatibility while benefiting from a single TLS and routing layer Two web servers mean two configurations, two log locations, and another layer to troubleshoot

WordPress’s official developer guidance notes that Nginx can run by itself or reverse-proxy to Apache, and that many sites reported as using Nginx are actually Apache behind an Nginx proxy. Select the simpler arrangement that matches your applications. Do not copy Apache rewrite snippets into Nginx unchanged; translate the rules and test them.

Prepare the VPS before adding sites

  • Use a supported Linux distribution, apply security updates, and set the correct timezone and hostname.
  • Create a non-root administrator with sudo, disable password SSH login after key authentication is confirmed, and restrict SSH with a firewall or network policy.
  • Install only the services you need. Keep package repositories and runtime versions consistent across sites so updates are predictable.
  • Reserve storage for operating-system logs, web logs, databases, backups, and temporary files. A full filesystem can take every site offline even when CPU and memory are idle.
  • Open inbound TCP 80 and 443. Keep database, cache, PHP-FPM, container, and internal proxy ports bound to localhost or a private container network.
  • Record where configuration, content, uploads, secrets, and backups will live before the first deployment.

Map every domain in DNS

Create an A record for each hostname that should reach the VPS, such as example.com and www.example.com. Add AAAA records only when the VPS is correctly configured for IPv6; an unreachable IPv6 address can make some visitors fail even though IPv4 works. Point every record at the same VPS address, then wait for resolvers to return the new value.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check resolution from more than one network before issuing certificates. A DNS record that exists at the authoritative provider but has not propagated to the resolver used by Certbot can cause validation errors. Keep the old server available during a migration until the new address is consistently returned.

Give each site its own layout and identity

Do not put every project in one writable directory. A practical filesystem layout separates code, public files, logs, and deployment metadata:

/srv/sites/static-example/current/public
/srv/sites/static-example/releases
/srv/sites/static-example/shared
/srv/sites/cms-example/current
/srv/sites/cms-example/shared/uploads
/etc/nginx/sites-available/
/etc/nginx/sites-enabled/
/var/log/nginx/static-example.access.log
/var/log/nginx/cms-example.error.log

Use a distinct Unix user or service identity for each application where feasible. The proxy should be able to read static content but should not have broad write access. CMS upload directories need carefully limited write permissions; the application should not be able to modify its own executable code unless that behavior is intentional.

Keep separate:

  • Document roots and release directories.
  • Unix users, groups, file ownership, and environment files.
  • Access and error logs, with rotation and retention rules.
  • Databases, database users, encryption keys, API credentials, and mail settings.
  • Deployment pipelines and rollback targets.

Drupal’s multisite documentation describes separate site configuration and notes that automation can create Apache or Nginx virtual hosts and enable HTTPS. Whether you use a control panel, a Drupal-oriented tool, or your own scripts, the goal is the same: repeatable per-site configuration rather than hand-editing a shared file.

Configure Nginx for a static site

After installing Nginx, create one server block per hostname. The following example serves a static site from a dedicated root and redirects HTTP to HTTPS after certificates are installed:

server {
    listen 80;
    listen [::]:80;
    server_name example.com www.example.com;

    root /srv/sites/static-example/current/public;
    index index.html;

    location / {
        try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
    }
}

Enable the file, test the complete configuration, and reload gracefully:

sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/static-example.conf /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/static-example.conf
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx

Use a deployment process that updates a new release directory and switches the current symlink atomically. That prevents visitors from receiving a mixture of old and new assets during an upload.

Route CMS requests to PHP-FPM or an application service

For a PHP CMS running with PHP-FPM, the proxy serves ordinary files and sends PHP scripts to the site’s own socket or upstream. A minimal pattern is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
server {
    listen 80;
    server_name cms.example.com;
    root /srv/sites/cms-example/current/public;
    index index.php index.html;

    location / {
        try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$query_string;
    }

    location ~ .php$ {
        include snippets/fastcgi-php.conf;
        fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm-cms.sock;
    }
}

The exact socket name and include file differ by distribution and PHP version. Verify them locally rather than pasting a path from another system. Give each high-risk CMS its own PHP-FPM pool when practical so one site’s worker limit, environment variables, and memory behavior do not automatically control every site.

A CMS can also run behind an internal HTTP upstream, such as an Apache process or a container:

upstream cms_backend {
    server 127.0.0.1:8081;
}

server {
    listen 80;
    server_name cms.example.com;

    location / {
        proxy_set_header Host $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
        proxy_pass http://cms_backend;
    }
}

Make the application trust forwarded headers only from the proxy you control. Otherwise, generated HTTPS URLs, login redirects, client-IP logging, and rate limits may be wrong.

Use Apache virtual hosts when compatibility matters

Apache’s name-based virtual hosts follow the same DNS rule: every hostname must resolve to the server. A simplified configuration is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName example.com
    ServerAlias www.example.com
    DocumentRoot /srv/sites/static-example/current/public

    <Directory /srv/sites/static-example/current/public>
        Options -Indexes
        AllowOverride None
        Require all granted
    </Directory>

    ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/static-example-error.log
    CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/static-example-access.log combined
</VirtualHost>

For a CMS that relies on directory-level rewrite rules, set AllowOverride deliberately and limit the allowed directives. Enabling unrestricted overrides across the entire filesystem makes accidental or compromised configuration harder to contain. Enable each site, run Apache’s configuration test, and perform a graceful reload before serving traffic.

Containerize CMS and database dependencies when repeatability is valuable

Docker describes Compose as a tool for defining and running multi-container applications. Compose is useful when each CMS needs a repeatable web runtime, database, cache, worker, and private network. Keep the public edge proxy outside the application network or attach it only to the specific networks that need routing.

services:
  cms:
    image: example-cms-image:version
    depends_on:
      - db
    environment:
      DATABASE_HOST: db
    volumes:
      - cms_files:/var/www/html
    networks:
      - cms_net

  db:
    image: example-database-image:version
    environment:
      DATABASE_NAME: cms
      DATABASE_USER: cms
      DATABASE_PASSWORD_FILE: /run/secrets/db_password
    volumes:
      - cms_db:/var/lib/database
    networks:
      - cms_net

volumes:
  cms_files:
  cms_db:

networks:
  cms_net:
    internal: true

Use pinned image versions, a secrets mechanism rather than passwords committed to YAML, named volumes for persistent data, and explicit health checks. Compose improves repeatability and service separation; it does not automatically provide backups, patching, monitoring, or perfect security isolation. A container with a writable host mount can still damage shared data if permissions are too broad.

Issue HTTPS certificates for every hostname

Once DNS resolves and ports 80 and 443 are reachable, use Certbot’s Nginx or Apache plugin to obtain certificates and install the corresponding HTTPS configuration. The plugin can also create the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect when you approve it. Request certificates for all names that the site actually serves, including a www alias only when that alias exists in DNS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install Certbot and the plugin matching the web server.
  2. Confirm that each hostname resolves to this VPS and that TCP 80 is reachable for HTTP validation.
  3. Run Certbot for the selected names and review the proposed configuration before accepting changes.
  4. Test the resulting configuration with nginx -t or Apache’s configuration test, then perform a graceful reload.
  5. Run a renewal dry test and keep the scheduled renewal timer enabled. A certificate that was issued successfully once can still fail later if DNS, port access, or permissions change.

Restrict private-key permissions to the web-server account and administrators who need them. Monitor renewal logs and expiration dates; do not wait for browsers to report an expired certificate.

Protect databases, credentials, and administrative paths

  • Bind database and cache services to a private interface or internal Compose network, not 0.0.0.0.
  • Create a separate database and least-privilege database user for each CMS. Do not reuse one superuser credential across sites.
  • Store secrets outside the web root and exclude them from repositories and public backups.
  • Disable directory listing, remove unused test files, and set explicit upload limits.
  • Protect CMS administration with strong authentication, updates, and, where practical, an IP allowlist or VPN.
  • Forward logs to a location that survives container replacement and rotate them before they consume the disk.

Isolation reduces the blast radius of a vulnerable plugin or compromised account, but sites still share the VPS kernel, storage, network, and failure domain. A separate VPS is the stronger boundary for untrusted customers, regulated workloads, or sites whose availability requirements conflict.

How many sites can a VPS handle?

There is no honest universal number, and the reviewed official documentation publishes no general site-count statistic. A small static site may consume almost no CPU while idle, whereas a busy CMS can exhaust PHP workers, database connections, memory, or storage I/O with only a few domains. Traffic concurrency, uncached requests, plugins or modules, image processing, scheduled jobs, backups, and monitoring all change the result.

Resource What to measure Warning signs
CPU Sustained utilization, load average, and per-process spikes during publishing or cron jobs Slow responses while CPU remains saturated; queued PHP or container workers
Memory Resident usage, filesystem cache, swap activity, and database buffer allocation OOM-killer events, swapping, workers being terminated, random 502/503 responses
PHP/application workers Active, idle, and queued workers per CMS Requests waiting for a free worker; timeouts under modest concurrency
Database Connections, slow queries, locks, cache hit rate, and transaction volume High query latency, connection exhaustion, or disk stalls
Storage Free space, inode use, read/write latency, and backup growth Full volumes, slow writes, failed uploads, or backups overlapping peak traffic
Network Bandwidth, packet loss, and transfer bursts from media or downloads Throttling or increased latency during large transfers

A 2 GB or 4 GB VPS cannot be assigned a reliable site count from its RAM label alone. Start with one representative static site and one representative CMS, observe them during normal traffic and scheduled tasks, and leave headroom for bursts, updates, and restoration. Add CPU, RAM, or faster storage when a resource is consistently constrained; split databases or move the busiest CMS to another VPS when isolation or contention, rather than raw capacity, is the limiting factor.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Backups and recovery are part of the design

Back up site files, uploaded media, databases, secrets, and proxy configuration independently. A database dump without uploads cannot restore a CMS, and a filesystem snapshot without a consistent database may produce an unusable application.

  1. Take scheduled database dumps with retention that covers at least one known-good version before updates.
  2. Copy static files and CMS uploads to storage outside the VPS. Keep credentials for that storage separate from the server’s root credentials.
  3. Version-control Nginx or Apache configuration and Compose files, but keep secrets in a protected secret store or encrypted backup.
  4. Record DNS, certificate, runtime, and database versions so a rebuild does not depend on memory.
  5. Perform a restore to an isolated environment. Verify pages, logins, media, scheduled jobs, and HTTPS before calling the backup usable.

Test restoration after changing the architecture, not only after a backup job reports success. A single VPS remains a single hardware and provider failure domain even when its backups are excellent.

Deploy and update without taking every site down

Use per-site releases and graceful reloads. For static content, upload a new release, verify ownership and permissions, then switch the current symlink. For a CMS, stage code and configuration, run database migrations during a maintenance window when required, clear the appropriate cache, and keep the previous release available for rollback.

Update one application at a time when possible. Check proxy syntax before reloading, health-check the site’s homepage and an authenticated or dynamic endpoint, and inspect that site’s error log. Containerized services should be recreated with the same persistent volumes and a known image version; never treat a disposable container filesystem as the only copy of uploads or database data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational checks that catch failures early

  • Monitor HTTP status, latency, TLS expiry, DNS resolution, disk space, memory pressure, and backup age for every hostname.
  • Alert on repeated 4xx and 5xx responses by site rather than looking only at aggregate VPS health.
  • Review access logs for unexpected hostnames. A default server that answers unknown names can accidentally expose the wrong site’s content.
  • Keep a documented runbook for certificate renewal, database restore, rollback, and provider migration.
  • Rehearse a full VPS rebuild from configuration and backups. The exercise reveals undocumented manual steps before an outage does.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The wrong site appears

Check that the hostname resolves to the intended address, that the request’s Host name exactly matches server_name or ServerName, and that only the intended configuration is enabled. Clear stale browser and DNS caches after correcting records.

HTTP works but HTTPS fails

Confirm that TCP 443 is open, the certificate includes the requested hostname, and the TLS server block points to the correct key and certificate chain. Run the proxy’s configuration test before reloading.

Every CMS returns 502 or 503

Inspect the upstream socket or container health, worker limits, and service logs. A shared PHP-FPM pool or a stopped internal network can fail multiple sites at once; separate pools or services make the fault easier to contain.

Permalinks or clean URLs return 404

Static files may be working while the CMS fallback is missing. In Nginx, verify the try_files rule and application front controller. In Apache, verify the rewrite module and the narrowly scoped AllowOverride policy. Never assume an Apache .htaccess file is read by Nginx.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pages become slow after adding a site

Compare CPU, memory, PHP-worker queues, database latency, disk I/O, and cron activity before changing cache settings. A new backup or image-processing job may be the contention source. Add headroom or move the noisy workload when tuning cannot restore predictable latency.

Select an operating model

Model Advantages Costs and risks
Hand-managed server blocks Transparent, minimal layers, and full control over routing and permissions Repetitive setup; mistakes in one shared configuration can affect many domains
Control panel or automation Faster provisioning of virtual hosts, users, certificates, and routine settings Another update surface and less visibility into generated configuration; verify the resulting files
Compose per CMS Repeatable runtimes, private service networks, and simpler rollback of application versions Requires container-image, volume, secret, and health-check discipline
Separate VPS per high-risk or high-load site Strongest fault and resource boundary among these options More servers, patches, monitoring, and cost

For a mixed portfolio, a front proxy with separate static roots and one application service per CMS is usually the best balance. Use hand-managed blocks when transparency is the priority, automation when many nearly identical sites must be provisioned, and Compose when reproducible dependencies or clean service boundaries matter more than minimizing layers.

A practical build sequence

  1. Inventory every domain, alias, CMS runtime, database, upload path, traffic pattern, and recovery requirement.
  2. Provision and harden the VPS, configure SSH and the firewall, and reserve storage for logs and backups.
  3. Create A and, when appropriate, AAAA records; verify that each hostname resolves to the VPS.
  4. Install Nginx or Apache and create a separate server block or virtual host for each site.
  5. Deploy static files to their own roots and deploy each CMS with its own credentials, database, and logs.
  6. Connect dynamic sites to PHP-FPM, Apache, or private container upstreams; expose no internal service port publicly.
  7. Test routing over HTTP, then obtain certificates with Certbot and enable HTTPS redirects.
  8. Configure automated backups, log rotation, monitoring, and renewal tests before announcing the sites.
  9. Load-test representative pages, observe resource headroom, and document the threshold at which you will scale or split the VPS.

This sequence keeps DNS, routing, application deployment, and operations independently verifiable. It also makes adding the next site a repeatable change instead of a risky edit to a monolithic server.
