The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has the highest stated bare-camera depth in this comparison: 20 m, versus 12 m for the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and a 10 m figure reported for the GoPro HERO13 Black by TechRadar. For long underwater sessions or forceful water, use the matching waterproof or dive case rather than relying on a bare-camera rating.
Those depth figures are not guarantees against leaks, impact damage, or every kind of water exposure. The available specifications also do not establish which camera produces better kayak footage, so choose by exposure, recording needs, housing and mounting setup—not by a claimed performance winner.

DJI’s depth and feature specifications come from its Osmo Action 5 Pro FAQ; Insta360’s come from its Ace Pro 2 product page. TechRadar reports the GoPro figure in its HERO13 Black versus Osmo Action 5 Pro comparison; treat that number as secondary-source information, not a verified current GoPro specification.

The battery figures are not a head-to-head comparison: the cameras’ stated protocols differ, and both manufacturers caution that real runtime varies. Neither lab figure predicts how long a camera will record on a kayak outing.

Which camera fits your kind of water exposure?
Paddle splash, rain, and spray
All three are candidates to consider for exposed outdoor use, but a depth rating describes a stated submersion limit—not immunity to spray, drops, a damaged seal, or a collision. Inspect the camera and follow its maker’s water-use instructions before taking it out. The available material does not support a definitive ranking for ruggedness or real-world kayaking results.
Accidental dunking
The higher stated bare depth of the DJI and Insta360 models gives more submersion margin on paper: 20 m for DJI and 12 m for Insta360. The HERO13 Black’s 10 m figure is reported by TechRadar. These figures do not make intentional dunking risk-free; seals, covers, wear, and impact can affect water protection.

Deliberate underwater filming or high-impact water
DJI rates the Osmo Action 5 Pro to 60 m in its Waterproof Case and recommends installing it for long-duration underwater shooting or environments with high water-impact pressure. Insta360 rates the Ace Pro 2 to 60 m in its Dive Case. Use the correct model-specific housing for the intended conditions, and check the housing instructions and compatibility before relying on it. A bare-camera rating should not be substituted for a housed-use rating.
Video, stabilization, storage, and mounting
DJI lists a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor and 47 GB of built-in storage for the Osmo Action 5 Pro. Its 4K modes reach 120 fps, while HorizonSteady is specified for selected 1080p and 2.7K 16:9 frame rates—not every resolution or mode. Check DJI’s mode specifications when a particular resolution and horizon-leveling combination matters.

Insta360 advertises 8K/30 fps, 4K/120 fps, and 4K Active HDR up to 60 fps for the Ace Pro 2. It describes FlowState stabilization and 360-degree Horizon Lock. These are product features, not evidence that its footage will look steadier or better than another camera’s on a kayak; no controlled kayak-footage comparison is established here.
Plan how the camera will attach before buying accessories. DJI’s support page describes the Quick-Release Adapter Mount and lists supported microSD card models. A float or tether can help reduce the chance of losing a camera, but verify compatibility with the specific camera and housing. Do not assume a mount or tether fits every case.

Prepare the camera for water use
DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro checks and care
- Before exposure, check that the glass lens cover and screens are intact.
- Close the battery and USB-C covers, and tighten the lens cover.
- For long underwater recording or high water-impact conditions, fit DJI’s Waterproof Case as DJI recommends.
- After underwater use, rinse the camera with clean water and let it air-dry fully before using it again.

Use the Ace Pro 2 Dive Case when the planned conditions call for the manufacturer’s housed 60 m rating, and follow Insta360’s current instructions for fitting and care. For GoPro, verify the current official HERO13 Black water specifications and housing guidance before treating the secondary-source 10 m figure as definitive. No GoPro manufacturer source for that rating is established here.

How to choose without overbuying
- Mostly splash and rain: Compare the camera features and mounting arrangement you need, while treating water protection as conditional rather than guaranteed.
- More margin for an accidental dunk: DJI lists 20 m bare and Insta360 12 m bare; TechRadar reports 10 m bare for HERO13 Black. These are not equivalent to a promise against damage.
- Planned submersion or forceful water: Budget for the correct compatible case and use its instructions. DJI and Insta360 each list a housed depth of 60 m.
- Need a particular recording mode: Check that the chosen resolution, frame rate, stabilization, and horizon-leveling features can be used together in that mode.
- Need a full setup: Account for the camera, compatible housing if needed, mount, tether or float, and compatible memory card. Current prices, bundles, and total setup costs are not established here.
