The best water butt for a small garden is the one that fits your available floor space, clears your downpipe and leaves the tap usable. A 100L slimline model is a practical size to compare, but “slimline” does not guarantee it will fit: check the full dimensions, including any stand, and the diverter connection before buying.
What to measure before choosing a water butt
Measure the intended spot rather than relying on a product label such as “space saving.” Check the space at the height of the butt as well as at ground level: a wall, fence, pipe bend or projecting sill can make the usable area narrower higher up.

- Width and depth: Measure the clear floor area and allow room to connect the diverter and reach the tap.
- Overall height: Include the stand if the model comes with one. A stand can raise the tap for filling a watering can, but increases the installation height.
- Tap access: Make sure there is enough room to turn the tap and position a watering can beneath it.
- Downpipe: Check its shape, material and diameter, then match those details to the diverter specified by the seller.
- Installation space: Allow room for the diverter connection and any fittings; do not measure only the butt’s body.
Write down the maximum width, depth and height you can accommodate, then compare each with the seller’s current product dimensions. Product listings may give dimensions in different orders, so confirm which measurement is width, depth or diameter, and height.

How to choose between slim, square and taller designs
Choose by the tightest dimension
A cylindrical model uses a diameter measurement; a square or rectangular model has separate width and depth. If the space beside your downpipe is narrow in only one direction, compare the narrowest side of each footprint. The Strata set listing gives a 32cm width and 36cm depth, while the Crocus model is listed at 38cm in diameter. Those figures do not include every possible installation clearance, so leave room for the pipe connection and access.

Compare usable height, not just body height
A stand changes the total height and can make the tap easier to use. The Crocus listing gives separate measurements with and without its stand: 94cm and 121cm respectively. Strata’s set is listed at 96cm high, while its standalone butt is listed at 126cm. Check which version is being sold and whether the height refers to the complete set or the butt alone.

The examples here show that 100L options are available in compact shapes, but the listings do not establish one capacity as right for every small garden. Consider how much room you can give the butt and what you want to water, then choose a capacity that fits those constraints. No supported figure here establishes typical garden demand, rainwater yield or water-bill savings.

Check downpipe compatibility and kit contents
Do not assume that a diverter will fit simply because a product is sold as a water-butt set. The Crocus and Strata listings specify standard 68mm round or 65mm square plastic downpipes. Crocus explicitly excludes cast iron. If your pipe differs in shape, material or size, confirm compatibility with the seller before buying rather than assuming an adapter is included.
Compare the contents line by line. A complete installation may need a butt, lid, tap, stand and diverter; some listings describe the butt alone, while others sell a set. Check whether the tap is pre-fitted, and whether any linking pieces or other fittings you need are included. The current product page is the place to verify the exact bundle.

What product listings do not tell you
Retailer and manufacturer pages provide dimensions and kit descriptions, but these examples have not been established through controlled comparative testing. They do not show which model will last longest, how much rainwater a particular garden will collect, or how much a household might save. Do not treat a product description such as “space saving” as an independent performance result.
