It is the model whose manufacturer documents a safe mounting method, identifies a compatible bracket, and states the clearances and fixings for your wall and television. Sonos Arc, Sonos Beam, Bose Smart Soundbar and Samsung soundbars all illustrate why compatibility must be checked by exact model rather than assumed from appearance.
Use the guide below to choose a documented mount, plan cable and wall clearances, and install the bar without guessing about anchors or screw sizes. The examples are model-specific; they are not universal soundbar rules.

What makes a soundbar genuinely wall-mountable?
A soundbar is wall-mountable when the manufacturer provides a supported way to attach that exact model to a wall. That may be a purpose-built bracket, a kit sold separately, or a mounting method described in the product manual. A bar having a flat back, keyhole slots or threaded inserts does not by itself prove that any universal bracket is safe.
The strongest evidence is a manufacturer recommendation that names both the soundbar and the accessory. Sonos says its Arc can be secured with a compatible wall mount and recommends the custom-designed Arc Wall Mount, sold separately. Sonos likewise recommends a Beam Wall Mount kit for Sonos Beam. Bose identifies a Soundbar Wall Bracket accessory for its Smart Soundbar line, but the exact soundbar and bracket combination still has to be verified. Samsung publishes installation directions for individual soundbar models rather than one specification that applies to every bar it sells.

Mounting also changes the acoustic and physical setup. The distance below the television, clearance from side walls, location of the power and signal cables, and type of wall anchor all affect whether the installation is safe and whether the bar can operate as intended. Treat a bracket and its instructions as part of the soundbar system, not as an interchangeable afterthought.

Check compatibility before buying a soundbar wall mount
1. Record the complete model name
Write down the model and, where applicable, its generation, regional suffix or “SL” designation. “Arc” and “Arc SL” have related instructions, but a bracket sold for one model should not be assumed to fit the other. The same caution applies to Beam revisions, Bose Smart Soundbar variants and Samsung bars with similar external dimensions.

Look for a bracket named for the soundbar, not merely a product described as fitting a range of widths. Sonos’ Arc Wall Mount and Beam Wall Mount are examples of model-named accessories. If the maker offers no bracket, read the manual for approved mounting points and load requirements before considering a third-party mount.
3. Match the wall construction
Identify whether the bracket will attach to solid masonry, wood studs, metal studs, plasterboard or another surface. The Arc SL instructions call for different pilot-hole guidance by wall material. A fastener that is appropriate for a concrete wall is not automatically appropriate for drywall, and a drywall anchor may be unsuitable for a heavy load that is not tied to a stud.

4. Compare the bracket’s fixing points with the bar
Check the hole pattern, screw engagement, bracket width and any supplied spacers against the exact manual. Do not drill based only on the bar’s overall length. Confirm that the bracket does not cover a connector, block ventilation openings or interfere with the bar sliding onto its rail.
5. Verify clearances around the television and walls
Measure the space below the TV, the depth of the screen and any projection from the wall. Also measure the side space: Arc SL instructions say to keep both ends at least 1 foot (30 cm) from a wall or other obstruction for best sound quality. That is a named-model instruction, not a universal acoustic formula.

Prepare the installation area
Plan the final position
Mark the TV’s centerline and decide where the soundbar should sit relative to it. A soundbar that is visibly off-center can also leave one end too close to a wall. Use the manufacturer’s clearance requirement before marking the bracket height. For Samsung’s published guidance, the bar should be at least 5 cm below a wall-mounted TV for optimal performance. For Arc or Arc SL, the guide specifies at least 4 inches (102 mm) between the soundbar and TV. Use only the value belonging to your model.
Plan cables before drilling
Route power, HDMI, optical or other signal cables while the bar is still on the floor. Samsung specifically advises connecting cables before installing the unit on the wall. Leave enough slack for the bar to slide onto its bracket and for a future cable change, but avoid a loop that pushes the bar away from the wall. Check that plugs can be inserted without forcing a sharp bend.
Gather the right tools
A level is useful whenever the instructions call for one; Sonos Arc SL directions explicitly tell the installer to level the bracket. You may also need a drill, a bit appropriate to the wall material, a screwdriver, a stud finder and a tape measure. The bracket manual, not a generic tool list, determines the pilot-hole diameter and anchor type. Bose’s Soundbar Wall Bracket includes a mounting template, which can reduce measuring errors, but it does not replace checking the wall and model compatibility.

Protect the equipment
Clear a soft, stable work surface for the soundbar. Disconnect power before handling connectors, and have a second person support the bar when it is lifted onto the bracket. Keep screws, spacers and covers in a tray so that a part from a different kit is not accidentally substituted.

How to mount a soundbar below a wall-mounted TV
- Read the exact manual first. Confirm the soundbar model, approved bracket, wall type, screw or anchor requirements, clearance from the TV and any side-clearance instruction. If the manual and a retailer listing disagree, follow the current manufacturer documentation.
- Find structural fixing points. Locate studs or determine the masonry points that can carry the bracket. Mark the TV centerline and the bracket’s horizontal center. Do not assume that the center of a drywall panel is a suitable anchor.
- Set the height using the model’s clearance. Measure from the bottom edge of the wall-mounted TV to the top or reference edge specified by the soundbar guide. Use 5 cm only for the Samsung guidance cited above and 4 inches (102 mm) only for the Arc/Arc SL example. Leave room for cables and for the bar to slide into place.
- Position the template or bracket. If the kit includes a template, tape it level at the marked position and transfer the fixing points. If there is no template, hold the actual bracket in position and mark through its holes. Check that both ends meet the required side clearance before drilling.
- Drill pilot holes suited to the wall. Use the diameter and depth specified for your wall material. Arc SL instructions provide different pilot-hole guidance by material; do not copy an anchor or drill size from another model. Stop if the bit encounters an unexpected pipe or cable path.
- Install the specified anchors or screws. Seat each fixing fully without crushing plasterboard or stripping the head. Samsung Australia’s example calls for M5 screws 35 mm or longer, but that specification must be confirmed against the exact Samsung model and wall construction before use.
- Level and tighten the bracket. Check level in both directions, then tighten the fixings in the sequence given by the manual. A bracket that is technically secure but tilted can make the bar appear misaligned with the TV and may prevent its locking mechanism from engaging.
- Connect and dress the cables. With the bar supported, connect the prepared cables and leave the recommended service slack. Keep cables clear of the bracket’s sliding path and any heat-producing equipment.
- Attach the soundbar. Lift the bar onto the rail, hooks or screws exactly as shown in the guide. Slide it until the retention feature engages; never rely on gravity alone. Gently test for movement while supporting the bar.
- Perform a final safety and clearance check. Confirm that no cable is pinched, the bracket is level, the bar is the prescribed distance below the TV, and both ends have the model’s required clearance. Power on and verify audio before removing protective supports.
Wall-material decisions and fastener mistakes
Solid masonry
Brick and concrete generally require a masonry bit and anchors rated for that substrate. The hole diameter, depth and screw type still come from the mount’s instructions. Brush dust from the hole and ensure the anchor seats fully; a loose plug can rotate when the screw is tightened.
Wood studs
When the bracket holes align with studs, use the structural screws specified by the manufacturer. Pre-drilling can prevent splitting, but the pilot size must match the screw and wood. If the bracket spans two studs, use both where the manual permits rather than placing every fastener in drywall.
Drywall or plasterboard
Do not substitute a random hollow-wall anchor because it fits the hole. Use the anchor type and load rating required by the bracket, and attach to studs whenever possible. If the instructions do not establish that a particular anchor is adequate, stop and obtain a suitable fixing rather than estimating the load.
Metal studs and unusual surfaces
Metal framing, tile over masonry, paneling and acoustic treatments can require different drilling and anchoring methods. The soundbar guide may not cover every combination. A mounting professional can identify a safe fixing strategy when the wall cannot be positively identified.

Clearance, acoustics and obstructions
Clearance is both a safety and performance issue. A bar pressed against the TV can block controls or cables, while a bar tucked into a side wall can change how sound reaches the room. Sonos Arc SL instructions specify at least 4 inches (102 mm) to the TV and at least 1 foot (30 cm) from a wall or other obstruction at each end for best sound quality. Samsung’s cited guidance specifies at least 5 cm below a wall-mounted TV. These figures come from different product instructions and should not be averaged or treated as a universal minimum.
Account for the TV’s tilt, a protruding wall plate, a mantel, shelves and decorative trim. Swing the screen through its full adjustment range before final tightening. Leave enough room to remove the soundbar without dismantling the TV if the manual describes a slide-off service motion.
Common installation failures and fixes
The bracket does not line up with the bar
Recheck the complete model number and bracket part number. A similar-looking accessory may have a different hole pattern or rail width. Do not enlarge holes or bend the bracket to force a fit; return it for the model-specific accessory.
The soundbar sits too close to the TV
Measure from the reference points in the manual, not from the screen’s decorative bezel. Move the bracket down and recheck cable slack. For Arc/Arc SL, restore the 4-inch (102 mm) minimum; for the Samsung example, restore at least 5 cm.

Loosen the bracket slightly, level it with the bar removed, and retighten evenly. If the wall is uneven, use only spacers or shims approved by the bracket instructions. Do not wedge loose material behind a load-bearing fixing.

The bar moves after installation
Remove it while supporting its weight and inspect the retention latch, screws and anchors. A slide-on bracket may not be fully seated. Replace stripped fixings or damaged anchors; do not compensate by adding random screws through the soundbar enclosure.
Cables cannot be connected
Take the bar down, connect the cables on the work surface and reinstall it. Samsung’s guidance specifically recommends making these connections before wall installation. Check that the cable bend radius does not push the bar off the bracket.
There is a stud, pipe or cable where a hole should be
Stop drilling and move the bracket only after recalculating the centerline and clearances. Never drill through an unknown obstruction. If no safe fixing pattern remains, use a professional installer.
A practical buying checklist
- Exact soundbar model and generation recorded.
- Manufacturer-recommended bracket identified, with confirmation that it is sold separately if applicable.
- Bracket hole pattern, load rating and retention method match the bar.
- Wall material and structural fixing points identified.
- Required screws, anchors, spacers and pilot-hole sizes taken from the model manual.
- TV clearance measured using the model’s own instruction.
- Side-wall and obstruction clearance checked.
- Template or level available when the kit or guide calls for one.
- Cables can be connected before hanging and have service slack.
- Current manual and accessory compatibility checked immediately before purchase and installation.
Manufacturer accessories and documentation are the safest basis for a recommendation in this category. Current prices, inventory, product revisions and retailer availability change, so verify those details at the time you buy rather than relying on an old listing.
The Bottom Line
Choose the soundbar whose manufacturer names a compatible wall mount, then install it strictly to that model’s wall, screw and clearance instructions. The Arc/Arc SL, Beam, Bose Smart Soundbar and Samsung examples show why a “universal” assumption is risky: brackets, pilot holes, cable order and TV spacing differ by model.
