For a fixed devotional video or playlist, a Linux VPS running headless FFmpeg is usually the simplest do-it-yourself setup: prepare compatible media, loop it to YouTube over RTMPS, and run FFmpeg as a system service so it can restart after a crash or reboot. Choose the server by its sustained CPU capacity and monthly outbound-transfer allowance—not port speed alone—and monitor YouTube’s ingest separately from the process. Use OBS on a desktop-enabled VPS when you need scenes or GUI controls.
Choose the setup that matches your stream
| Option | Best fit | Main tradeoff | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo, managed cloud service | Keeping uploaded videos or playlists live on YouTube without administering a server | Less server-level control; check service terms and plan limits | Output quality, storage, recovery, destination and support |
| FFmpeg on a Linux VPS | A fixed prerecorded video or playlist | Requires command-line setup and ongoing operator care | Codec compatibility, CPU, traffic allowance, restart and monitoring |
| OBS on a desktop VPS | Scenes, visual transitions or GUI operation | More resources and desktop maintenance | CPU/GPU allocation, remote desktop, transfer allowance |
For a static devotional stream, start with FFmpeg unless you specifically need OBS scenes. The VPS sizing figures below are provider examples, not independently tested requirements or performance guarantees. The StreamNeo claims and plan details are its own product information.
Prepare the YouTube stream and media
Set up YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live and create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream key and the ingest server URL shown there. Treat the key like a password: do not paste it into public notes, screenshots, source repositories or chat.
- Use the current secure RTMPS ingest endpoint supplied by YouTube where your encoder supports it. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Recheck YouTube’s guidance when configuring the stream because platform settings can change.
Check content rights and channel policy
Use only recordings, music, artwork and other material you have permission to stream. Devotional subject matter does not itself grant rights to a song recording, performance, image or video. A rights holder may claim or block a stream, and YouTube policies also apply to repeated or reused content. Review YouTube’s current live encoder guidance and applicable copyright and monetization rules before scheduling a continuous broadcast; do not assume that an always-on stream is eligible for monetization.
Prepare a complete file or playlist that can repeat cleanly. Confirm video and audio play correctly, that the ending does not leave a long blank interval, and that the chosen format is supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current settings.

Size the VPS around encoding and monthly traffic
The server workload changes substantially depending on whether FFmpeg copies already-compatible audio/video streams or encodes them. Encoding or transcoding requires CPU; avoid assuming a VPS specification will suit every codec, frame rate or provider CPU. Pre-encoding locally to the intended delivery format may shift work away from the server, but the available examples do not establish a measured resource saving.
Provider-published starting examples
| Workload example | CPU and RAM | Upload rate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 480p FFmpeg loop | 1 core, 1 GB RAM | 2 Mbps | Space-Node sizing example, published 2026; not independently validated |
| 720p FFmpeg loop | 2 cores, 2 GB RAM | 5 Mbps | Space-Node sizing example, published 2026; not independently validated |
| 1080p FFmpeg loop | 2 cores, 4 GB RAM | 8 Mbps | Space-Node sizing example, published 2026; not independently validated |
| 1080p OBS software encoding | 4 cores, 4 GB RAM | 10 Mbps | Space-Node sizing example, published 2026; not independently validated |
For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube lists a video bitrate range of 2–6 Mbps and a total bitrate range of 3–8 Mbps. The video bitrate does not include audio; plan the VPS upload rate and traffic using the total outgoing stream bitrate.
Estimate monthly transfer
Continuous traffic accumulates quickly. At about 2.5 Mbps, Space-Node estimates approximately 1 TB per month for 1080p streaming; this is a vendor estimate, not a universal requirement. Calculate for your actual total bitrate and runtime, then leave headroom and check the provider’s traffic and fair-use terms. A 1 Gbit port describes link speed, not how much monthly data is included.

This example re-encodes video using libx264. Confirm that the chosen bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio and keyframe interval meet YouTube’s current guidance; configure a two-second keyframe interval if the encoder’s defaults do not already meet it. If you switch to stream copy to avoid encoding, first confirm the source codecs and container are compatible with the selected YouTube ingest settings. Do not copy an old RTMP example as a substitute for the endpoint currently shown in YouTube.
Keep FFmpeg running through disconnects and crashes
A detached tmux session can survive a shell disconnect, but it does not by itself provide the same reboot recovery as a service manager. For a continuous stream, create a systemd unit so the service starts on boot and restarts after an encoder exit. A minimal unit pattern is:

Save the unit, then run sudo systemctl daemon-reload, sudo systemctl enable --now devotional-stream.service, and check it with sudo systemctl status devotional-stream.service. Use a root-readable environment file or another protected secret mechanism for the stream key rather than exposing it in a world-readable unit file. Restrict permissions and avoid printing secrets in logs. A systemd restart can recover a failed FFmpeg process; it cannot guarantee YouTube is receiving or showing a healthy stream.
OBS on a VPS: when the extra setup is worthwhile
Choose OBS when you need scenes, visual transitions or GUI control rather than a fixed loop. A desktop-enabled VPS also needs remote access and maintenance of its graphical environment. Configure OBS’s stream destination and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then match YouTube’s current resolution, bitrate, CBR and keyframe guidance. The provider example of 4 cores, 4 GB RAM and 10 Mbps upload for 1080p software encoding is only a starting estimate; workload and VPS CPU matter.

Monitor the stream, not just the process
A service can report as active while its output is frozen, rejected or no longer reaching YouTube. Check both the server-side encoder logs and the stream status or preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Arrange an independent alert or regular check for failed ingest and frozen output. Confirm that a recovery actually restores the YouTube broadcast; automatic process restart alone is not end-to-end stream monitoring.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong ingest URL or stream key, network issue, or encoder output mismatch | Copy the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS configuration, and inspect FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream status. |
| Stream starts then drops | Encoder or network interruption, or VPS resource pressure | Check system logs and sustained CPU use, confirm the provider’s traffic limits, and verify that systemd restarts the process. Confirm recovery at YouTube. |
| Video stutters or server load is high | VPS cannot sustain the selected encoding workload, or bitrate exceeds available upload capacity | Check CPU and outbound rate; consider a compatible pre-encoded source or a larger VPS. Recheck quality and bitrate settings rather than assuming more port speed fixes CPU saturation. |
| Audio or video is rejected or plays incorrectly | Unsupported source codec/container, wrong settings, or a file problem | Validate the media, codec, resolution, frame rate, audio and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| Monthly traffic runs out or costs more than expected | Continuous stream uses more outbound transfer than the plan includes | Recalculate using total bitrate and actual runtime; check quota and fair-use terms before upgrading or changing providers. |
| Broadcast is claimed, blocked or unsuitable for monetization | Rights issue or channel-policy issue | Review permissions for every recording and visual, respond through YouTube’s available rights process, and review current copyright and reused-content rules. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If server administration is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo is a managed service for keeping uploaded videos or playlists live on YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
