For static illustrated stories, a sensible starting point is 720p at 30 fps, H.264 video, AAC stereo audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 video at 240p–720p and 30 fps; that is an encoder video-bitrate recommendation, not a VPS size or total network budget.
YouTube hosts the broadcast and transcodes it for viewers; the VPS runs the encoder and sends the feed. The official YouTube API documentation describes a 24/7 live-feed use case in its broadcasts and streams documentation.
Can I run a YouTube livestream from a VPS?
Yes. A VPS can keep an encoder running while your own computer is off. The encoder reads your prerecorded video and audio, loops or sequences the files, and sends one continuous feed to YouTube. YouTube’s Live Control Room handles the broadcast and delivery to viewers.
YouTube does not publish a minimum CPU or RAM specification for this setup, nor does it recommend a particular VPS provider. Choose a host based on your actual encoder workload, sustained outbound network performance, included data transfer, storage needs, restart and monitoring controls, support, and cost. A provider’s advertised uptime or network speed is not a substitute for checking its service terms and testing your stream.

What settings should the VPS encoder use?
For illustrated stories with limited motion, start with the following configuration. It is a starting target, not a guarantee that every source file or VPS will perform well at these settings.

Consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance when choosing settings beyond this baseline. Do not size the VPS from the 4 Mbps video figure alone: add audio bitrate and network overhead, and allow enough sustained outbound capacity for the complete feed.

How do I set up a 24/7 YouTube stream on a VPS?
- Prepare the channel in advance. Verify the YouTube channel and enable live streaming before the planned launch. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Choose and configure a VPS. Select a general-purpose Linux server capable of encoding your chosen media at the intended resolution and frame rate. Check the host’s CPU and RAM allocation, sustained outbound capacity, monthly transfer allowance and overage terms, storage, region and route to YouTube ingest, restart controls, monitoring, and support. No specific plan size or provider is established by YouTube’s guidance.
- Prepare the story playlist and rights. Put the video and audio files in an order that can repeat without an unintended gap or abrupt transition. Confirm you have the rights needed to livestream every story, illustration, music track, sound effect, and other element. A VPS does not change your copyright obligations.
- Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to reach the Live Control Room, then create or configure the stream. Set the audience accurately; a stream genuinely intended for children should be marked made for kids as appropriate. Copy the server/stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s RTMPS configuration.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Store it in a protected configuration or secret store rather than a public script, repository, or log. Limit who can access it, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Run the encoder as a managed service. Configure the process to start on boot and restart after failure. Use log rotation so continuous operation does not fill the disk, and add a health check that alerts if the encoder exits or the outgoing stream stops advancing. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service from a VPS provider.
- Test the full path before relying on it. Send a representative story with its real audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, confirm the public watch page and mobile playback, and observe CPU and network use over a sustained run. YouTube advises testing and monitoring a live stream.
- Estimate monthly transfer. Use the configured total bitrate—not video bitrate alone—and expected runtime to estimate outbound data. Compare that estimate with the VPS plan’s included transfer and overage terms. A 24/7 stream can use substantially more data than an occasional broadcast; confirm the host’s current policy and pricing directly.
What happens to a 24/7 stream’s replay?
Do not treat a continuous 24/7 broadcast as a guaranteed archive. YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also become limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
If individual story episodes or replays matter, plan for them separately: schedule broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and keep local recordings or other backups. Do not assume that splitting an encoder feed automatically creates separate YouTube broadcasts while preserving a seamless viewer experience; verify that behavior before building a schedule around it.

What changes when the stream is made for kids?
Accurately mark a stream made for children as made for kids in YouTube’s controls. For made-for-kids live streams, YouTube disables live chat, live chat replay, and Super Chat. Comments on upcoming streams and archives, as well as reminder notifications, are also disabled. Personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may appear. These settings affect interaction and revenue expectations; do not plan on chat or personalized advertising for such a stream. YouTube’s live-stream restrictions guidance covers the relevant rules.
Copyright matches or strikes can lead to live-stream restrictions. Do not try to bypass an active channel restriction by broadcasting through another channel while the restriction remains in force.

How should I compare VPS options?
There are no provider-specific plans or verified prices established here, so compare offers using the workload and safeguards that determine whether your stream can run reliably:
- Outbound transfer: included monthly data, sustained throughput, overage charges, and any fair-use limits.
- Encoding capacity: CPU and RAM available to your process, plus any encoding acceleration if your workflow uses it.
- Storage: enough space for the media files and any local recordings you intend to retain.
- Network route and region: the server’s region and practical connection to YouTube ingest.
- Recovery and operations: restart controls, monitoring, log management, provider support, and the host’s stated service terms.
- Total cost: recurring server charges plus transfer overages and any storage or backup charges.
A VPS with a software encoder leaves server administration, monitoring, and recovery configuration to you. A managed cloud encoder may reduce that work, but its cost and features need a separate comparison; do not assume it offers a particular capability or price.

Troubleshooting common VPS stream problems
