For 10,000 daily viewers, the best design is not a single oversized VPS. Use a VPS as the origin and control plane, put a video CDN in front of it, and size the system from peak concurrent viewers, bitrate and watch time. In this comparison, DigitalOcean is the strongest starting point because it markets streaming-oriented, CPU-optimized Droplets and publishes straightforward transfer pricing. Amazon Lightsail is a useful predictable-price benchmark. Neither provider’s small bundled plan proves that one server can deliver every byte to 10,000 viewers.
What “10,000 daily users” means for capacity
A daily-user count does not tell you how many people watch simultaneously. Ten thousand viewers spread across a full day can be an easier workload than a few hundred viewers arriving for the same live event. Before choosing a plan, establish these inputs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Average and peak concurrent viewers.
- Average watch duration and the busiest viewing window.
- Average and peak video bitrate, including the complete adaptive-bitrate ladder.
- Live, video-on-demand (VOD), or mixed traffic.
- Viewer geography and expected cache-hit ratio.
- Availability, startup-time and rebuffering targets.
Outbound transfer and edge delivery are usually the first constraints. Higher resolutions require higher bitrates, and both viewer bandwidth and provider network capacity matter. CPU and memory become critical when the VPS is also transcoding, packaging, authenticating requests or running the application.
A planning example
Assume 10,000 viewers each watch 30 minutes at an average 3 Mbps. One viewer consumes approximately 675 MB during that session. The service therefore delivers about 6.75 TB per day, or 202.5 TB over 30 days. This is arithmetic from those assumptions, not a provider benchmark. Audio, manifests, segment requests, retries and higher-bitrate renditions add overhead, so a production estimate should include headroom.

If viewers watch twice as long, or the average bitrate rises to 5 Mbps, transfer grows proportionally. Conversely, a CDN that serves cached segments from edge locations can keep much of that traffic away from the VPS origin. The origin’s transfer bill and the CDN’s delivery bill must be modeled separately.
Why a VPS alone is usually the wrong streaming architecture
A practical system divides responsibilities rather than asking one machine to do everything.
- Encode the source. Produce multiple renditions so a player can adapt quality to the viewer’s connection.
- Package the video. Generate segments and manifests in HLS, DASH or CMAF format.
- Store or expose the origin. Keep packaged VOD files in origin storage, or expose the live packager to the delivery layer.
- Distribute through a CDN. Cache segments at edge locations close to viewers. The CDN absorbs repeated requests and reduces origin egress.
- Run application services separately where needed. APIs, authentication, catalogs, billing and monitoring can run on the VPS or on separate application nodes.
- Measure before scaling. Track peak concurrency, cache-hit ratio, origin egress, startup time, rebuffering and 95th-percentile latency.
An encoder must package video before a CDN can distribute it. Adaptive bitrate streaming lets the player move between renditions as available bandwidth changes, which is why a single fixed-resolution file is a poor fit for a broad audience.

DigitalOcean’s official streaming material explicitly covers media streaming and lists CPU-optimized Droplets, load balancers, VPC networking and Kubernetes. Its published transfer pricing is also easy to model: plans include at least 500 GiB of outbound transfer, and public egress over the allowance is listed at $0.01 per GiB.
Useful baseline plans
| Droplet plan | Memory | Included transfer | Published monthly price | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baseline plan | 8 GiB | 5,000 GiB | $48 per month | Origin and application baseline, not a guarantee for a 10,000-viewer audience. |
| Baseline plan | 16 GiB | 6,000 GiB | $96 per month | More memory for packaging, APIs and caching, but still far below the illustrative 202.5 TB monthly delivery scenario. |
The 5–6 TB transfer allowances are tiny compared with 202.5 TB. If the VPS delivered the entire illustrative workload directly, transfer overage alone would dominate the bill. A CDN and careful cache policy are therefore essential, not optional cost optimizations.

CPU-optimized plans are relevant when the server packages streams, encrypts segments, handles many concurrent connections or performs limited transcoding. Heavy multi-rendition transcoding can still require dedicated encoding capacity; do not assume a CPU-optimized VPS can encode every source in real time without a load test.
When DigitalOcean fits
- You want a clearly documented streaming-oriented cloud starting point.
- You need a straightforward origin with VPC, load-balancer and container options.
- You will put a CDN in front and can forecast egress overage.
- You prefer transparent per-GiB public egress pricing for financial modeling.
A customer testimonial on DigitalOcean’s streaming page describes real-time streaming at scale and highlights a one-cent-per-GB transfer price. Treat that statement as vendor-page testimony, not an independent capacity benchmark.

Amazon Lightsail: simple, predictable bundles
Lightsail is useful when you want a fixed bundle that is easy to budget. A published plan provides 16 GB RAM, 4 vCPUs, 320 GB SSD storage and 6 TB of transfer for $84 per month. Larger bundles are published up to 128 GB RAM and 10 TB of transfer.
| Published bundle | Resources | Included transfer | Price | Streaming implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lightsail bundle | 16 GB RAM, 4 vCPUs, 320 GB SSD | 6 TB | $84 per month | Convenient origin or application baseline; transfer is far below high-watch-time scenarios. |
| Largest published range | Up to 128 GB RAM | Up to 10 TB | Plan-dependent | More compute and storage choices do not remove the need for CDN delivery planning. |
Lightsail’s allowance counts inbound and outbound traffic. That distinction matters if you upload large source files, pull content between services or use the instance as both encoder and origin. The 6 TB allowance is still much smaller than the illustrative 202.5 TB monthly requirement, so the bundle should be treated as a predictable control-plane or origin cost, not as a complete audience-delivery budget.
When Lightsail fits
- You value a simple, bundled monthly price.
- Your VPS will run application services and a modest origin behind a CDN.
- You want a clear baseline before moving to more granular infrastructure.
- You can keep large media storage and edge delivery outside the instance.
DigitalOcean versus Lightsail for this workload
| Decision axis | DigitalOcean | Lightsail |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming positioning | Official material specifically markets media streaming and CPU-optimized Droplets. | General-purpose bundled instances with published resource and transfer packages. |
| Example transfer package | 8 GiB plan: 5,000 GiB; 16 GiB plan: 6,000 GiB. | 16 GB, 4-vCPU plan: 6 TB. |
| Example price | $48 per month for the 8 GiB plan; $96 per month for the 16 GiB plan. | $84 per month for the 16 GB, 4-vCPU, 320 GB SSD bundle. |
| Published egress detail | $0.01 per GiB of public egress over the included allowance. | Traffic allowance is bundled; inbound and outbound traffic count toward it. |
| Best role | Streaming-aware origin, packaging host or application node behind a CDN. | Predictable-price origin or application baseline behind a CDN. |
Neither table entry establishes a maximum concurrent-viewer count. Performance depends on the codec, segment duration, encryption, request rate, cache behavior, geography and whether encoding runs on the same machine.

How to size the VPS before you buy
1. Convert audience assumptions into traffic
Calculate average bits delivered per viewer, multiply by average viewing minutes and then by daily viewers. Add a margin for audio, manifests, retries and rendition switching. Repeat the calculation for the busiest hour, not only the daily average.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Separate origin traffic from edge traffic
Estimate how many requests reach the origin after CDN caching. VOD segments with long cache lifetimes can achieve high hit ratios; live segments have a short freshness window and may produce more origin requests. Model both origin egress and CDN egress.
3. Decide where encoding happens
Transcoding a source into several renditions is CPU-intensive. If encoding is on the same VPS as the origin and API, reserve CPU headroom or move encoding to a separate worker. For live streaming, test sustained real-time encoding rather than a short burst.
4. Check storage and I/O
VOD libraries need capacity for source files, encoded renditions, manifests and temporary packaging data. Segment delivery also creates many small reads, so monitor disk latency and filesystem cache behavior instead of looking only at disk size.
5. Select a region deliberately
Place the origin near encoders, storage and the majority of viewers when possible. A CDN still improves global delivery, but origin distance affects cache misses, startup and replenishment latency.

6. Load-test the real ladder
Use the actual codecs, segment duration, encryption, authentication flow, player request pattern and geographic distribution. Increase concurrency until CPU, network throughput, origin egress, startup time or rebuffering violates your target. There is no published universal CPU or RAM figure for exactly 10,000 daily users.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A production-ready implementation sequence
- Define service targets. Record peak concurrent viewers, target resolutions, average watch time, maximum startup delay, acceptable rebuffering and availability target.
- Create an adaptive ladder. Include a range of bitrates and resolutions appropriate to the source and expected devices. Keep the average ladder bitrate in the transfer model.
- Package for playback. Generate HLS, DASH or CMAF segments and manifests. Validate that the player can switch renditions without restarting.
- Provision the origin. Start with a CPU-optimized DigitalOcean Droplet or a Lightsail bundle sized for packaging, APIs and cache-miss traffic. Keep media storage and application data organized separately. An Antihost VPS is another self-managed Linux option, with AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, NVMe storage, full root access and unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine.
- Place a CDN in front. Configure the CDN origin, TLS, cache rules for segments and manifests, byte-range behavior where applicable, and purge procedures for changed VOD assets.
- Protect the origin. Restrict direct access where possible, rate-limit abusive clients, authenticate private manifests and use signed URLs or tokens when your business model requires them.
- Instrument the path. Capture concurrent sessions, cache-hit ratio, origin bandwidth, CPU, memory, disk I/O, startup time, bitrate switches, stalls and HTTP errors.
- Run staged tests. Test a small audience, then peak concurrency, then failure cases such as an origin restart, CDN cache miss storm or encoder interruption.
- Scale by bottleneck. Add encoding workers for CPU pressure, separate application nodes for API pressure, larger or multiple origins for network pressure, and CDN capacity or configuration changes for edge pressure.
Live streaming and VOD have different bottlenecks
Live
Live streams continuously create fresh segments. Cache lifetimes are short, so the origin and packager see a steady request stream even with a CDN. Encoder availability, segment latency and recovery from dropped input are central concerns. A reference architecture commonly separates encoding, packaging and CDN delivery rather than placing all three functions on one small VPS.
VOD
VOD segments can remain cached for long periods. Once popular titles are warm at the edge, origin bandwidth may be modest compared with total viewer delivery. Storage, cache invalidation and protection against a cold-cache surge become more important than raw daily-user count.
Costs that are easy to miss
- Transfer overage: DigitalOcean’s published public-egress rate is $0.01 per GiB beyond the allowance. At hundreds of terabytes, even a small uncached fraction matters.
- CDN delivery: The CDN is a separate line item from the VPS. Price it using regional traffic and cache behavior.
- Storage: Source media, renditions, backups and snapshots can exceed the disk attached to the initial instance.
- Encoding: Live or multi-rendition encoding may require additional CPU nodes or a specialized media service.
- Backups and replicas: High availability usually requires more than one origin or an independently recoverable storage layer.
- Logging and monitoring: Player QoE telemetry and retained logs consume storage and may incur service charges.
Do not compare a $48 or $84 monthly instance directly with a full streaming bill. Those figures describe a server bundle, not encoding, storage, CDN delivery, backups and operational support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon failure modes and fixes
The VPS looks idle, but viewers rebuffer
Check CDN cache misses, edge-to-viewer throughput, player bitrate selection and regional latency. A low origin CPU graph does not prove that the delivery path is healthy.
Best Value
Transfer usage rises far faster than expected
Inspect cache headers, query-string variation, duplicate URLs and manifest behavior. If every viewer bypasses the cache, the origin pays for traffic that should have been served at the edge.
CPU reaches saturation during live events
Separate encoding from packaging and application work, reduce the number of simultaneous renditions only if quality targets permit it, or add encoding workers. Validate sustained real-time performance rather than relying on a brief benchmark.
A cache purge causes an origin surge
Stagger purges, warm popular objects where the CDN supports it, and use versioned VOD paths so unchanged segments remain cacheable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
One instance becomes a single point of failure
Keep recoverable media and configuration outside ephemeral local state, document rebuild steps, and test restoring the application, packager and origin. Add a second origin or failover path when the availability target justifies it.
Recommendation
Start with DigitalOcean when you want the clearest streaming-specific positioning, CPU-optimized options and transparent public-egress pricing. A 8 GiB, $48 plan or 16 GiB, $96 plan can serve as an origin and application baseline, but their 5,000–6,000 GiB transfer allowances are nowhere near the illustrative 202.5 TB monthly workload.
Choose Lightsail when bundled pricing and simple budgeting matter more than granular transfer modeling. Its published 16 GB, 4-vCPU, 320 GB SSD and 6 TB bundle at $84 per month is a reasonable origin or control-plane benchmark, not proof of capacity for 10,000 daily viewers.
In either case, put a CDN in front, use adaptive-bitrate packaging, separate heavy encoding from audience-facing services when necessary, and make the final decision from a load test using real concurrency, bitrate, geography and cache behavior.
