Can you use a VPN on Xbox?
Yes, but the support instructions cited here do not describe installing a VPN app directly on an Xbox. NordVPN Support says, “Video gaming consoles do not support built-in VPN functionality,” and points users to a VPN-configured router or a Windows device sharing a VPN-protected connection. The exact options and setup instructions depend on the service and Xbox model.

There are three distinct approaches:
- VPN-enabled router: Configure a compatible router to connect to the VPN, then connect the Xbox to that router’s network. This can keep the VPN available without leaving a PC running.
- Windows connection sharing: Connect a Windows PC to the VPN and share that connection; connect the Xbox to the PC’s shared network.
- Smart DNS: Change the console’s DNS settings for supported streaming uses. This is not a VPN tunnel and does not provide the same privacy or IP-masking features.
Check router compatibility and the provider’s instructions before buying hardware or changing settings. A router is optional: Windows sharing may work with equipment you already own.

Which VPNs are worth comparing for Xbox?
The table separates Gizmodo’s measured results from each provider’s intended use. Gizmodo published the comparison on September 28, 2026. Its Windows 11 test PC was in Europe on a 190.36 Mbps connection with a 10 ms baseline ping. The listed provider measurements used Vienna VPN servers; cloud-gaming latency came from Xbox Cloud Gaming stream statistics in a browser. Results describe that setup, not what every Xbox player will get.

The title calls for five services, but the usable evidence does not support naming a fifth without relying on the excluded paid-client brand or inventing a candidate. The four named options are therefore the defensible comparison from the cited figures. Gizmodo’s Vienna measurements also show why “fastest” depends on the metric: ExpressVPN led download speed in that table, while the lowest ping and cloud-gaming latency belonged to different providers.

How should you choose for your Xbox use?
Nearby multiplayer
Start by testing a VPN server near you or the game server. In Gizmodo’s Vienna test, the providers’ ping results ranged from 20 ms to 38 ms, compared with its 10 ms baseline. Those figures are specific to Gizmodo’s European PC and connection; your route, server location, ISP, and game can change the outcome. A VPN should not be expected to reduce lag by default.
Distant game servers
NordVPN had the lowest average ping in Gizmodo’s separate UK, US, and Japan distant-server round, including a reported 215 ms to Japan. That is a result from the publisher’s test, not a promise that it will improve a particular player’s connection.

Privacy
A VPN connection through a router or shared PC routes the Xbox’s traffic through the VPN. If privacy is your main reason for using one, do not treat Smart DNS as equivalent: it changes DNS behavior for supported services but does not encrypt all console traffic or mask the IP address in the way a VPN tunnel does.
Streaming
Smart DNS may be a simpler option when the goal is access to a supported streaming service and the provider documents the console model. ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer guidance is for Xbox One and Xbox 360. PIA’s cited Smart DNS procedure is for Xbox One. These instructions do not establish identical support across every provider or Xbox generation.

How to connect an Xbox to a VPN
Option 1: Use a VPN-enabled router
- Check that your router supports VPN connections and that your VPN provider supports that router or its firmware.
- Follow the provider’s router setup instructions to configure and connect the VPN.
- Connect the Xbox to the configured router’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
- Test the console’s connection and the game or service you intend to use. If the connection is unstable or slower, try a nearer VPN server or disconnect the VPN to compare.

- Connect the Windows PC to the VPN and confirm the VPN connection is active.
- Enable Windows connection sharing or a mobile hotspot that shares the VPN-protected connection. The precise Windows labels can vary by version and network adapter.
- On the Xbox, open its network settings and connect to the shared Wi-Fi network, or use Ethernet if your PC and setup support it.
- Check that the Xbox is online and test the game or streaming app. Keep the PC on and connected while the console uses the shared connection.
NordVPN’s support instructions identify a VPN-protected Windows hotspot as a console method. Sharing behavior can depend on Windows configuration and the VPN client, so consult the provider’s current guidance if the Xbox cannot connect.

Option 3: Configure Smart DNS for supported streaming
- Confirm that the provider supports Smart DNS for your intended service and exact Xbox model.
- Get the DNS addresses and any activation instructions from the provider.
- On the Xbox, open network settings, choose the active connection’s advanced settings, and enter the provider’s DNS details.
- Restart or reconnect the network if the provider’s instructions require it, then test the supported streaming app.
ExpressVPN describes MediaStreamer as changing DNS for streaming “without encryption or IP masking.” PIA’s cited guide covers Smart DNS setup on Xbox One. Provider interfaces and service support can change; use the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming every console has the same menu path.
What Xbox model and policy limits matter?
