WhatsApp’s Help Center says only that using a VPN can allow you to connect if WhatsApp is unavailable from your current network. This guide covers the VPNs worth shortlisting, what the evidence does and doesn’t show about each, and the free proxy option built into the app. It also gives a short test you can run before relying on any of them.
Why this isn’t a ranked “top 5”
No independent, comparable test of five VPNs against WhatsApp messaging and calling, country by country, exists in the sources used here. A numbered ranking would imply measurements that don’t exist. Instead, this article names the four providers that have a documented link to WhatsApp access problems and tells you what is established about each. The fifth option is not a VPN. It is WhatsApp’s own proxy feature, and it is often the better first try.

WhatsApp’s guidance, in its Help Center page on connecting when the network isn’t working, says: “Using a VPN can allow you to connect to WhatsApp if it is unavailable from your current network.” The same page suggests trying a different network and describes the proxy option. It also tells users to check the laws and rules that apply where they are. (WhatsApp Help Center, Arabic-localized page)

| Option | What the evidence shows | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Mullvad | Named by WhatsApp’s Help Center as an example of a premium VPN provider. | No ranking, performance data or access guarantee from WhatsApp. |
| Amnezia VPN | Also named by WhatsApp’s Help Center as an example. | Same: a named example, not a tested recommendation. |
| NordVPN | Recommended in Comparitech’s “Best VPNs for WhatsApp” (updated February 23, 2026), which reports its own tests. | That is one outlet’s assessment. It doesn’t cover your destination, ISP or mobile carrier. |
| Surfshark | Its support article, “Will WhatsApp work with Surfshark?” (updated September 11, 2026), advises trying a different app location if WhatsApp doesn’t work. It points users in restricted countries to separate guidance. | This is the provider’s own troubleshooting advice, not an independent result. |
| WhatsApp proxy (not a VPN) | Built into the app and announced by WhatsApp on January 5, 2023. | You need a working proxy address. Proxies are run by volunteers and organizations, so reliability varies. |
Mullvad and Amnezia
These are the only providers WhatsApp itself names, so they are reasonable to investigate first. Being named as an example is not an endorsement. WhatsApp offers no comparison and no promise that either gets through a given block.
#1 Best Overall

- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.

NordVPN
Comparitech is the only third-party review surfaced for this topic, and it reports its own tests. Treat its pick as one data point. A VPN that works on the reviewer’s connection can still fail on a different carrier or in a different country.
Surfshark
Surfshark’s guidance is useful in practice. If WhatsApp fails, switch the app’s server location before concluding the service is blocked. Its separate advice for restricted countries is a sign that standard setups may not be enough in some places.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
VPN versus WhatsApp proxy
WhatsApp’s help text separates the two. A VPN routes your device’s whole internet connection. A proxy routes only WhatsApp’s traffic. (WhatsApp Help Center, Russian-localized proxy page)

The trade-off is that a third-party proxy operator can see your IP address. A VPN provider can see your traffic metadata instead, so you are choosing whom to trust.
When the proxy makes more sense
- You only need WhatsApp, and you don’t want to reroute your whole phone.
- VPN apps or VPN provider websites are blocked where you are. Set up the proxy in the app, and install a VPN before you leave if you want one.
- You want to avoid a subscription.
“Access globally” has limits
Restrictions vary by country, ISP and network, and by function: text, voice and video calls, or registration. A site check isn’t proof the app works. VPNAlert’s live monitor reported confirmed WhatsApp website blocks in 3 of 24 tested countries on October 2, 2026 (VPNAlert). That is a narrow, third-party test of whether the website opens on a limited set of connections. It says nothing about the mobile app, calls or any VPN’s effectiveness.

How to choose and test before you travel
What to check on any provider
- Apps for your phone’s operating system, and whether you can install them before departure.
- Published guidance for restricted networks, and any documented alternative connection options.
- Privacy policy and independent audit evidence.
- Refund terms as currently published, so you can test and leave if it fails.
- Recent, dated test reports for your destination. Server counts and “works everywhere” marketing don’t count as evidence.
A practical test routine
- Install and sign in to the VPN while your connection is still unrestricted.
- Connect to a nearby server and send a text, then a voice call, then a video call. Calls are the feature most likely to fail, so test them separately.
- If it fails, change the server location, as Surfshark suggests, and retry.
- Try another network, such as Wi-Fi instead of mobile data. WhatsApp itself suggests this.
- Set up a proxy in WhatsApp as a fallback and keep the address saved.
- Within any refund window, test on the network type you’ll use at your destination, such as hotel Wi-Fi or a local carrier.
If you pick a VPN, choose the one that passes this test on your own devices over any ranking, including this one.
