For adults in Australia, a VPN is best treated as a privacy tool—not a reliable way to reach a particular porn site or get around an age check. eSafety says service providers are expected to detect VPN use, but that does not establish how any particular site handles VPN traffic. This comparison focuses on what three providers say about data collection and connection-drop protection; it is not a speed or site-access ranking.

What Australia’s age-assurance rules mean for adult users

Viewing pornography is legal for adults in Australia, but access to specified age-inappropriate material is meant to be restricted to adults. eSafety’s FAQ on access to online porn and other adult content explains that the Age-Restricted Material Codes require in-scope services to take steps to prevent children under 18 from accessing or being exposed to that material. Which requirements apply depends on the service category and the relevant commencement or staged date.

The FAQ gives 27 December 2025 as the start date for codes covering search engines, internet carriage services and hosting services, and 9 March 2026 for codes covering designated internet services, electronic services, social media, app distribution platforms and equipment providers. It also identifies staged requirements on 27 June 2026 and 9 September 2026. Check eSafety’s regulatory guidance for current obligations rather than assuming every service has the same deadline.

Age assurance does not necessarily mean uploading a government ID. eSafety lists options including ID matching, facial age estimation, credit-card checks, digital identity systems, parental confirmation and AI-based estimates. Its FAQ says methods should minimize personal information and comply with Australian law and privacy principles; its guidance says providers should offer more than one method and should not rely on government-issued ID as the sole method. eSafety also says it does not receive individual user data under these codes.

For VPN users, the key caveat is that eSafety says providers are expected to detect VPN use. That is not proof that every VPN connection is detected, nor evidence that a specific site will block or allow one. No site-by-site behavior is established here, so a VPN should not be chosen on a promise of bypassing an age check or guaranteeing access.

VPN privacy policies compared

The table compares provider disclosures, not independently verified service behavior. A “no activity logs” statement concerns browsing activity; it does not mean the company collects no account, billing or support information. Read the linked policy or support page for the precise scope and any exceptions.

NordVPN NordVPN says it does not log online activity. It says it retains an email address, username and billing-related information. Its data-retention page describes the information it stores. NordVPN’s no-logs feature page reports six independent review engagements, with the sixth in 2025. This is the company’s account of those reviews; the page’s statement alone does not establish their full scope. NordVPN documents platform-specific kill-switch behavior and says the feature is not activated by default in some cases. See its kill-switch page for device-specific details.
Proton VPN Proton VPN says it does not log visited websites, traffic content, IP addresses, session lengths or location-based information. See its no-logs FAQ. Not stated on the linked no-logs FAQ. Proton VPN says its kill switch blocks network traffic if the chosen VPN server connection is lost. See its kill-switch page.
ExpressVPN ExpressVPN’s privacy policy says it does not collect logs of online activity and describes activity and connection details it says it does not store. The policy also explains other information the service may collect; it does not claim zero data collection. Not stated on the linked privacy policy. Not stated in the linked privacy policy.

How to choose based on your privacy needs

Decide what information you want to limit

Start with the data categories that matter to you: visited sites, traffic content, IP address, connection timing, account identifiers, billing data and troubleshooting information. Compare each provider’s current policy against those categories. Do not treat a no-activity-logs claim as a promise that no account information is retained; NordVPN’s published disclosure, for example, distinguishes its stated activity-logging position from account and billing-related information.

Check the scope of any independent review

A review is useful only in context: who performed it, what systems or policy it covered, and when. NordVPN reports six review engagements and dates the sixth to 2025, but that is a statement on the provider’s own feature page. The linked Proton VPN and ExpressVPN pages cited here do not state a comparable review detail, so this comparison does not infer that either has or lacks other reviews.

Confirm kill-switch behavior on your device

A kill switch is intended to block some or all internet traffic if the VPN connection drops, reducing the chance that traffic continues outside the tunnel. Implementation, platform availability and default settings differ. Read the provider’s instructions for your operating system and check whether protection is enabled; NordVPN specifically notes that its switch is not enabled by default in some cases. A kill switch is not a guarantee against every form of exposure or app-specific network behavior.

What this comparison cannot tell you

There are no hands-on speed measurements, Australian server comparisons, adult-site compatibility checks or tests of age-assurance systems in this comparison. Provider privacy pages are provider statements, even when they describe independent reviews. Consequently, the information supports a policy-and-feature comparison, not a claim that one service is faster, more private in practice, or more likely to work with a particular website.
