NordVPN is the strongest fit in the reviewed evidence for U.S. streaming; Surfshark is a speed-focused alternative; Proton VPN is the privacy-oriented choice; and Private Internet Access suits readers who want extensive configuration. These are evidence-based recommendations from named independent reviews—not firsthand tests by Freedom251. The supplied evidence supports four providers, not a fifth, so this guide does not invent a top-five ranking.
How to choose a VPN for the USA
Start with what you need the VPN to do. Domestic privacy, access to U.S. services while traveling, streaming, and advanced network configuration are different jobs. A large U.S. location count is not automatically an advantage if you need one particular region, and speed results from one lab are not a forecast for your connection. TechRadar’s U.S. guide recommends weighing use case, location coverage, speed, usability, security, and price. TechRadar’s U.S. VPN guide explains its testing and selection approach.

- For streaming: prioritize recent platform-specific tests, but treat them as snapshots because services change VPN detection.
- For privacy: read the policy’s scope and look for independent audits; a provider’s “no logs” claim alone is not verification.
- For speed: compare results only when the test setup is clear. Protocol, server, location, baseline, and test time all matter.
- For value: check the current full price, renewal terms, refund conditions, included features, and device limits directly with the provider. Those terms are volatile and are not established in the evidence summarized here.
Security.org says its reviewers examine privacy policies and cross-check claims against third-party audits. Its published methodology also describes leak and speed testing. Security.org’s VPN testing and review provides more detail.
Best VPNs for the USA in 2026: the shortlist
| Provider | Best fit in this guide | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | U.S. streaming | TechRadar reports successful sessions on ten sampled U.S. locations with Netflix U.S. and Peacock; those results describe its tests, not guaranteed ongoing access. |
| Surfshark | Speed-focused use | TechRadar reports WireGuard speeds above 1,000 Mbps in its nearest-server and U.S.-from-abroad tests. This is specific to its test environment. |
| Proton VPN | Privacy-oriented use | TechRadar describes it as privacy-focused and reports 22 U.S. locations in its guide. The location count is source- and time-specific. |
| Private Internet Access | Advanced configuration | TechRadar reports extensive configuration options and a more demanding interface; its streaming tests found no material unblocking problems except a temporary issue on one sampled streaming-optimized location. |
The table summarizes distinct use cases, not a shared lab ranking. TechRadar’s results reflect its hands-on testing and day-to-day use; they are not tests conducted by Freedom251. For another U.S.-specific benchmark, Comparitech says it tracked and evaluated ten VPNs, last testing them in September 2026, and notes that its speed and latency results come from its benchmark hosts rather than a reader’s internet connection. Comparitech’s U.S. VPN comparison and methodology gives its sample and test context.

Which VPN fits each use case?
NordVPN: the streaming pick
TechRadar reports that it tried ten NordVPN U.S. locations with Netflix U.S. and Peacock and encountered no issues in those sessions. It also measured NordLynx at 1,249 Mbps and OpenVPN at 688 Mbps in its own test environment. These are TechRadar measurements tied to its setup—not expected household speeds or a promise that a streaming service will always work. RTINGS, in a guide updated October 5, 2026, likewise assigns NordVPN a streaming-focused role while warning that platforms change their VPN-detection systems. RTINGS’ VPN comparison discusses that limitation.
Surfshark: a speed-focused alternative
In TechRadar’s tests, Surfshark’s WireGuard speeds exceeded 1,000 Mbps in both its nearest-server and U.S.-from-abroad scenarios. TechRadar also reports that the sampled U.S. locations streamed Peacock without issues. Those figures and outcomes belong to TechRadar’s test conditions; they should not be compared directly with results from a different reviewer using another connection or method.

Proton VPN: the privacy-oriented choice
TechRadar characterizes Proton VPN as privacy-focused, reports 22 U.S. locations in its guide, and measured WireGuard at 1,475 Mbps in its test environment. It says ten sampled U.S. locations produced generally smooth results with Peacock, Netflix, and Disney+. These findings offer a useful mix of coverage, performance, and streaming observations, but they do not establish a permanent location count or guarantee access. For a privacy decision, inspect the provider’s current policy and the scope and date of available independent audits rather than relying on a label alone.
Private Internet Access: for users who want control
TechRadar highlights Private Internet Access’s configuration options and describes its interface as more demanding. In its tests, Netflix, Prime Video, Peacock, and Disney+ presented no material unblocking problems, aside from a temporary issue on one sampled streaming-optimized location. This can suit a reader comfortable adjusting settings; the added flexibility may be less appealing if a simple interface is the priority.

How to interpret speed and streaming results
Independent speed tests are snapshots, not a league table of speeds readers should expect. Security.org reports a January 2026 test in which it ran ten Ookla tests per VPN and averaged results against its no-VPN baseline. Its reported download figures were:
| VPN | Average download speed | Download-speed loss |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 89.11 Mbps | 5.78% |
| Surfshark | 87.25 Mbps | 7.78% |
| Proton VPN | 86.07 Mbps | 8.18% |
| Private Internet Access | 90.48 Mbps | 4.84% |
These are Security.org’s January 2026 results under its test conditions, not consumer speed guarantees. They also cannot be merged with TechRadar’s much higher protocol-specific results into one ranking: the sources used their own setups and methods. Read the test context before treating any number as meaningful for your location, device, connection, and chosen server. Security.org’s published VPN tests describes its approach.

Streaming outcomes are similarly time-sensitive. A successful session establishes what worked for a reviewer at a particular time and setup—not indefinite access to a service, in every region, on every server. RTINGS explicitly cautions that streaming services can change detection algorithms. Choose a provider based on relevant, recent tests, then check the provider’s current support information and your service’s terms.

What this evidence can—and cannot—rank
The available material supports four differentiated recommendations, not five independently tested finalists. It does not establish a defensible fifth pick or a single overall winner under a declared scoring system. TechRadar describes hands-on tests of features, protocols, encryption, kill-switch reliability, DNS leaks, and performance at multiple times; those methods and findings belong to TechRadar. Security.org describes its own team and testing program, while Comparitech reports its own ten-provider U.S. sample. None of these third-party results should be presented as Freedom251’s firsthand testing.

The independent comparisons linked above are useful for narrowing the field, but these details can change after a review is published.
Can a VPN router help?
A router is a possible hardware route for older devices that cannot install a VPN app, not a necessary purchase for most users. RTINGS points readers toward its VPN-router guide for that situation. Before choosing hardware, check that it supports a protocol your VPN provider offers, is compatible with the service, can handle the throughput you need, and meets your setup requirements. The reviewed evidence does not establish a specific router model. RTINGS’ guide discusses the router option.
