There is no single “best VPN for Tanzania” for every job. If you need to appear to be in Tanzania while abroad, you need a provider with a Tanzanian exit server; Proton VPN says it offers one on paid plans, not its Free plan. If you want to connect to a VPN while physically in Tanzania, a provider’s server map does not establish that it will connect reliably through your particular mobile carrier or internet provider. No cited source provides current, head-to-head tests across Tanzanian networks.
Which VPN works in Tanzania?
First decide which location you need the VPN to represent. A VPN subscription is the service; an exit server is the location websites and apps see for your connection. Those are separate questions:

- Connecting from Tanzania to another country: Choose a service that offers the destination you need, then confirm it connects on your actual device and network. A provider’s global security features or a third-party ranking does not prove local connectivity.
- Getting a Tanzania IP address while abroad: Choose a provider that explicitly offers a Tanzanian server. Proton VPN says its Tanzania servers provide Tanzanian IP addresses, but they are not part of its Free plan. Proton VPN’s Tanzania server information
For a shortlist, Comparitech’s September 2026 guide recommends NordVPN, Surfshark and ExpressVPN, ranking NordVPN first and Surfshark as its budget choice. However, Comparitech also says NordVPN has no servers in Tanzania. That ranking is its assessment, not proof that NordVPN supplies a Tanzania exit IP or will connect on every Tanzanian network. How do the leading options compare?
| Provider | Tanzania exit server | Evidence and useful distinctions | What remains unestablished |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Provider says yes on paid plans; no Tanzania servers on Free. | Proton describes encryption, a kill switch, a no-logs policy, apps for major platforms and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Proton VPN’s Tanzania server information | Its page does not demonstrate successful connections on every Tanzanian ISP or carrier. Check current plan and refund terms. |
| NordVPN | No, according to Comparitech’s September 2026 guide. | Comparitech ranks it first in its Tanzania comparison and describes its speed tests and streaming assessment. NordVPN says its no-logs policy has undergone six independent reviews, most recently by Deloitte in 2025; it also describes Double VPN and Onion Over VPN. Comparitech’s Tanzania VPN comparison NordVPN’s no-logs information | Neither the ranking nor the provider’s stated review history establishes connection success on every Tanzanian network. No Tanzania exit server is reported by Comparitech. |
| Surfshark | Not stated in the cited material. | Comparitech names it its budget choice. Surfshark lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2 and Dausos, and describes RAM-only servers, Deloitte no-logs assurance reports from 2023 and 2025, and a SecuRing infrastructure audit completed in December 2025. Surfshark says the full Deloitte report is account-restricted. The cited material does not establish that it is definitively the cheapest; compare current introductory and renewal prices. |
| ExpressVPN | Not stated in the cited material. | Comparitech includes it among its recommended Tanzania options. ExpressVPN describes AES-256 encryption, its Lightway protocol and a no-logs policy. Comparitech also lists IPVanish, CyberGhost and PrivateVPN, but the cited material does not provide enough detail to assess them alongside the options above.

Can I use a VPN in Tanzania?
Do not reduce the available official notice to either “VPNs are illegal” or “VPNs are legal without conditions.” TCRA’s public notice page, revised July 28, 2026, links to a notice issued by the Director General on October 13, 2023. The attached notice says that individuals and companies whose undertakings make VPN use indispensable must declare their VPN and relevant information, including an IP address, by October 30, 2023. It warns of regulatory action against unauthorized use, including disabling access to such VPNs, and says facilitating access to prohibited content is an offence punishable on conviction. What should you check before choosing?
- Required exit location: Confirm the server country is actually offered on the plan you intend to buy. A Tanzania exit IP and the ability to connect from Tanzania are different capabilities.
- Your actual network and devices: Confirm app availability and test connection on the phone, computer, carrier or ISP you will use. The cited comparisons do not provide a reproducible, current test across Tanzanian mobile and fixed networks.
- Privacy evidence: Distinguish a provider’s own policy claims from independent reviews or audits. These can inform your view of policies and infrastructure, but do not prove speed, connection reliability or streaming access on your network.
- Connection options: Compare supported protocols and any obfuscation features against your needs. The cited sources do not establish which option works best through Tanzanian providers.
- Practical terms: Check device limits, support, streaming compatibility if relevant, and both introductory and renewal prices. Current prices and refund terms are not established by the cited comparison evidence, so verify them directly before paying.
