A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN’s server. It does not check who built an app, scan an APK for malware, or grant copyright rights. If you want a VPN for streaming on Android, Fire TV, or a phone, five services are worth shortlisting: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, Surfshark and Mullvad. This article explains why you should treat any ShowBox download with caution, then compares those five using the evidence available as of October 2026.
This is not a ranked list from first-hand testing. It draws on a TechRadar streaming-VPN review (September 2026), an AV-TEST comparison (October 2025), and the providers’ own documentation. None of these tested ShowBox.

What is actually known about ShowBox in 2026
“ShowBox” is not a precise enough name to identify one trustworthy app. Here is what the evidence supports, with each statement attributed.
- A ShowBox-branded website currently advertises free movie and TV streaming and downloads. It says it links to media hosted by third parties. These are the site’s own claims. They are not proof of licensing, of a connection to the historic Android app, or of safety.
- A current secondary investigation into the app’s status could not verify an identifiable developer or an authoritative, current distribution channel for the historic Android app. That is a finding about what could be verified. It does not prove that no legitimate channel exists anywhere.
- No ShowBox-specific malware rate, user count or security audit has been established. It would be wrong to say every ShowBox file is malicious. It would be equally wrong to call any particular file safe.
This article does not link to or recommend any ShowBox APK. If you can’t identify the publisher and the channel it ships through, you can’t tell what you are installing.

What a VPN does and doesn’t do here
What it can do
A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the provider’s endpoint. That hides your browsing from other users on the same Wi-Fi network and from your internet provider. It also shows websites the VPN server’s IP address instead of your own.
What it can’t do
- Authenticate an app. A VPN doesn’t verify an APK’s publisher or integrity. A modified or malicious app runs on your device the same way with or without a VPN.
- Remove malware. Once malware is on the device, it can act on the device itself, whatever the tunnel does to network traffic.
- Grant content rights. A VPN doesn’t change whether a stream is licensed. Copyright treatment varies by country, so check your local rules if that matters to you.
Google Play’s VpnService policy shows how narrow the platform’s own guarantees are. It requires apps that use Android’s VPN service to meet disclosure, declaration and encryption requirements. That sets duties for VPN apps. It does not certify other apps on your phone, and it says nothing about whether a given ShowBox APK is safe.

The security warnings that apply
The FBI’s March 12, 2026 alert is the most current official statement. It says: “Avoid TV streaming devices that claim to provide free sports, TV shows, and movies, as they may contain malware or backdoors that hijack your internet network and can lead to identity theft or other cyber crimes.” The FBI recommends official, trusted application stores. The alert is a general warning about free-streaming devices. It is not a forensic report on ShowBox.
The FTC’s consumer guidance, dating from May 2019, makes a similar point. Apps and add-ons associated with piracy may carry malware that can affect other devices on your home network. It is older and general, so read it as consumer advice rather than a current assessment of ShowBox.

- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
The home-network point matters for VPN buyers. A VPN on one device doesn’t protect other devices on your Wi-Fi from something that app does locally.
The five VPNs compared
The five names below come from independent comparisons published for general streaming use, plus provider documentation. They are in no ranked order. Streaming access changes often and can vary by location, streaming service and server, so none of these providers can promise that any particular service will work.

| Provider | Independent evidence | Documented device support | Evidence limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | In TechRadar’s September 2026 streaming review and AV-TEST’s October 2025 report | Not stated in the sources used here | General streaming comparison only |
| ExpressVPN | In the TechRadar review and the AV-TEST report | Its own page lists Fire TV and Fire OS 6 or later | Its privacy and no-logs commitments are described by the provider as independently audited; the audit’s scope should be checked |
| Proton VPN | In the TechRadar review and the AV-TEST report | Its support pages document Android TV and Fire TV guidance | Its guidance recommends using an official streaming-platform account |
| Surfshark | In AV-TEST’s October 2025 streaming-compatibility validation | Not stated in the sources used here | No fresh independent 2026 comparison established; the AV-TEST result is dated and tied to its tested setup and region |
| Mullvad | Named among providers in NordVPN’s company blog on a comparison it describes as following the AMTSO standard | Not stated in the sources used here | Competitor-published; only the summary was available, so treat it as weak evidence |
NordVPN
NordVPN appears in both independent sources: TechRadar’s September 2026 review of streaming VPNs and AV-TEST’s October 2025 report, which included streaming compatibility checks such as US Netflix. That supports it as a reasonable candidate for general streaming. It says nothing about ShowBox.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN also appears in the TechRadar review and the AV-TEST report. It lists support for Fire TV (Fire OS 6 or later) on its own page. That is useful if you stream on an Amazon device, but it tells you the VPN app runs there. It does not tell you ShowBox runs there. The provider also says its privacy and no-logs commitments have been independently audited. That is a provider claim, so read the audit’s scope before relying on it.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN is in both independent comparisons. Its support pages cover Android TV and Fire TV setup. They also recommend streaming through an official platform account. That fits the point of this article: VPN-protected streaming is best used with legitimate services.
Surfshark
Surfshark’s evidence is narrower. It was included in AV-TEST’s October 2025 streaming-compatibility validation, and a fresh independent 2026 comparison isn’t established. Read its inclusion as a dated, setup-specific result.
Mullvad
Mullvad is the thinnest entry. It was named among providers in a NordVPN company blog describing an AMTSO-standard comparison. NordVPN is a competitor and only the summary was available, so this doesn’t support ranking Mullvad above or below anyone. It is included as a shortlist name and nothing more.

How to choose among them
Apply the same five checks to every provider.
- Device support. Confirm there is a current app for your hardware, such as Android, Android TV, Fire TV, iOS, Windows or a router. Check the provider’s own support page for your exact device and OS version.
- Privacy evidence and its scope. Look for published audits. See what they covered (no-logs policy, apps, infrastructure), who did them, and when.
- Independent performance data. Check the test date and region. A result from one country in 2025 may not hold for you now.
- Setup and support. Look at how well the provider documents your device, such as the Fire TV and Android TV guides above.
- Total cost and renewal terms. This article doesn’t give prices, because VPN pricing and promotional terms change frequently. Check the checkout page for the full term price and what it renews at.
Be skeptical of any page that says a VPN “works with ShowBox” on the strength of marketing alone. No source reviewed here tested any of these providers with ShowBox.
Safer ways to watch
- Use official app stores. Install streaming apps from Google Play, the Amazon Appstore or your TV platform’s store, which is the FBI’s recommendation. These stores aren’t flawless, but they give you a known publisher and a review process.
- Use licensed services. A VPN works as a privacy layer on a legitimate subscription. Check the service’s terms, because some restrict VPN use or regional access.
- Keep devices updated. Install system and app updates, and keep Google Play Protect on if you use Android.
If you’ve already installed a ShowBox APK
This is general hygiene advice, not a diagnosis of any specific file.
Quick Recap
- Uninstall the app and remove any APK file you downloaded.
- Run a scan with Google Play Protect or a reputable mobile security app.
- Review which apps hold device-administrator, accessibility or notification-access permissions, and revoke any you don’t recognise.
- Change passwords for accounts you used on that device, starting with email and banking, and turn on two-factor authentication.
- If the device behaves strangely after that, consider a factory reset. On a streaming box, check your router for unfamiliar connected devices or changed settings too.
