NordVPN is the strongest overall gaming candidate in the current 2026 comparisons, while ExpressVPN is the easiest broad setup. Neither PS4 nor PS5 has a native VPN application, so you use a compatible router, share a VPN connection from Windows or macOS, or configure Smart DNS for selected streaming services. Your actual ping, jitter, NAT type and streaming access will depend on your ISP, distance to the game server, protocol and home-network hardware.

Quick verdict

Pick Best for How the PlayStation connects Important qualification
NordVPN Best overall gaming candidate Compatible router or Windows protected hotspot VPN.com’s October 2026 PlayStation ranking placed it first; results still vary by route and game server.
ExpressVPN Easiest all-round setup Router, Ethernet sharing from a computer, or MediaStreamer for supported streaming Top10VPN ranked it first for PS4/PS5 setup; Security.org describes an optional Aircove router.
Private Internet Access Budget and router users VPN-compatible router or Smart DNS where currently supported TechRadar describes it as budget-friendly and router-capable, while its PS4 Smart DNS documentation may not match every current product feature.
CyberGhost OpenVPN router alternative Router running a supported OpenVPN configuration TechRadar identifies OpenVPN router installation as the usual console route; extra encryption can increase latency.
Shared computer VPN People who cannot replace or flash a router Windows hotspot or macOS Ethernet sharing This is a deployment option rather than a fifth provider; performance depends on the computer, adapter and sharing method.

The rankings above are editorial conclusions from current third-party guides, not a guarantee that one service will be fastest on every ISP, location or game. No single publisher-owned benchmark provides universally comparable PS4/PS5 ping or speed figures.

Why PS4 and PS5 need an indirect VPN setup

Sony’s consoles do not provide native VPN apps in their standard software. NordVPN’s support documentation states, “You can’t download NordVPN on PlayStation or Xbox, for example.” The same limitation applies to other mainstream VPN applications: you cannot open a PlayStation store page, install a client and sign in as you would on a phone or computer.

Instead, the console sends traffic through another device that runs the VPN. A router is the most complete solution because every device on the selected network can use the tunnel. A shared Windows or macOS connection is useful when you only need the console protected temporarily. Smart DNS changes name-resolution and routing behavior for supported streaming services, but it is not an encrypted VPN tunnel and does not provide the same privacy or whole-console coverage.

The five practical choices

1. NordVPN: strongest overall gaming candidate

VPN.com’s October 2026 PlayStation ranking placed NordVPN first and cited router setup, SmartPlay and current performance scoring. Those findings make it the best starting point when your priorities are a full-console connection, access to supported streaming services and a mature router workflow.

NordVPN’s own support material confirms two supported approaches: configure a compatible router or run the VPN on Windows and create a protected hotspot. The router method keeps the console independent of a computer; the hotspot is faster to try if you already have a Windows laptop with a wired or wireless adapter.

  • Choose it when: you want one service to cover a console through a router and value a documented Windows-sharing path.
  • Check before subscribing: your router model and firmware, whether the provider supplies a configuration for your chosen protocol, and whether your ISP uses IPv6 in a way that your router handles correctly.
  • Expect: improved routing in some locations, but not a guaranteed ping reduction. A longer path to the VPN server can make latency and jitter worse.

2. ExpressVPN: easiest broad setup

Top10VPN ranked ExpressVPN first for PS4 and PS5 and describes three console routes: a compatible router, Ethernet sharing from a computer and MediaStreamer for supported streaming applications. Security.org also describes an optional Aircove router intended to simplify whole-home installation.

This breadth is useful if you are unsure which method will fit your home network. You can start with computer sharing, move to a router later and reserve MediaStreamer for an app that needs location handling without an encrypted tunnel.

  • Choose it when: setup simplicity matters more than minimizing equipment or subscription cost.
  • Router users: verify that the exact router firmware is supported; “router compatible” does not mean every stock ISP gateway can run the software.
  • Streaming users: MediaStreamer is a DNS-based feature, so it should not be described as a replacement for VPN encryption.

3. Private Internet Access: budget and router candidate

TechRadar describes Private Internet Access as budget-friendly and capable of router installation. That makes it a reasonable candidate when you want console-wide coverage but are trying to keep recurring costs down.

There is an important documentation distinction: Private Internet Access publishes a PS4 Smart DNS installation document, while the cited comparison describes the service as lacking SmartDNS. Treat those statements as platform- or product-version-specific rather than assuming that a feature documented for one setup is available in every region or on PS5. Confirm the current account options and router instructions before purchasing.

  • Choose it when: price and router support are more important than having a single, clearly documented Smart DNS feature set.
  • Verify: whether your chosen router configuration uses the protocol you want and whether the current Smart DNS option is enabled for your account and console.
  • Remember: a budget service can still perform well on your route, but no price tier guarantees lower ping.

4. CyberGhost: OpenVPN router alternative

TechRadar’s gaming guide identifies OpenVPN router installation as CyberGhost’s usual console path. This is useful if your router already supports manual OpenVPN profiles and you prefer a conventional, widely implemented protocol.

Manual router setup generally requires downloading a provider profile, entering server and credential details, selecting encryption settings and restarting the router. The exact fields differ by firmware, so follow the current provider instructions for your model rather than copying settings from another router.

  • Choose it when: your router has dependable OpenVPN support and you are comfortable with a manual configuration.
  • Trade-off: OpenVPN can impose more processing overhead than newer protocols on lower-powered routers, which may affect throughput and responsiveness.
  • Test: one nearby VPN endpoint and one endpoint near the game server; the best location is not always the geographically closest city.

5. Shared computer VPN: the no-router replacement

A Windows or macOS computer can act as the console’s VPN gateway. This is not a separate provider; it is the fifth practical way to deploy whichever supported VPN you select. It avoids changing router firmware and is suitable for a temporary gaming session, travel or a household router that cannot run a VPN.

Windows generally offers the most straightforward protected-hotspot workflow. macOS can share a VPN connection, but the available sharing choices depend on whether the computer receives the internet over Ethernet or Wi-Fi and whether a second interface is available for the console.

  • Advantages: no new router, quick rollback and easy switching between VPN locations.
  • Disadvantages: the computer must remain powered and connected, wireless sharing can add interference, and the console may inherit the computer’s NAT and firewall behavior.
  • Best use: troubleshooting or short sessions before committing to a router-based installation.

How to connect a PS4 or PS5 through a VPN router

A router is the most reliable way to cover the console without leaving a computer running. It also lets you decide whether only the PlayStation or the whole household uses the tunnel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm compatibility. Check the provider’s current list of supported router firmware and the exact model number. A provider may support third-party firmware but not the locked gateway supplied by your ISP.
  2. Choose a protocol. Use the provider’s recommended protocol for your firmware. Confirm whether the router supports modern options or only OpenVPN, and note any throughput limitations listed for the hardware.
  3. Back up the router. Save the current configuration and record your ISP login, Wi-Fi name and password. A firmware change or reset can erase those settings.
  4. Install the supported firmware or import the profile. Follow the router and provider instructions exactly. Upload only the configuration file intended for your firmware and region.
  5. Set IPv4 and IPv6 behavior. Sony states: “PS5® consoles support IPv6 network connections but do not support IPv6-only network connections.” If the router is configured as IPv6-only, change it to dual-stack or IPv4 so the PS5 can connect.
  6. Select the VPN server. Start with an endpoint near your physical location. If the game’s server is elsewhere, compare a second endpoint near that server because routing quality matters more than the country label.
  7. Connect the console. On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the VPN router’s Wi-Fi network or connect by Ethernet, then run Test Internet Connection. PS4 uses Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection in a similar sequence.
  8. Record a baseline. Test the game without the VPN, then with the VPN at the same time of day. Record latency, jitter if the game displays it, download and upload behavior, NAT type and disconnects.

How to share a VPN connection from Windows or macOS

Windows hotspot

  1. Install and sign in to the VPN application on Windows.
  2. Connect the computer to the chosen VPN location and verify that ordinary web traffic uses the tunnel.
  3. Open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot and enable hotspot sharing. In the sharing or adapter settings, select the VPN adapter as the connection to share; the label varies by VPN and Windows version.
  4. Give the hotspot a clear network name and strong password.
  5. On the PS4 or PS5, open the network setup screen, select the hotspot and run the connection test.
  6. Keep the computer awake, connected to power and within reliable Wi-Fi range. For lower jitter, connect the computer to the router by Ethernet and, where possible, connect the console to the computer or router by Ethernet as well.

macOS sharing

  1. Install the VPN client, connect to a server and confirm the VPN is active.
  2. Open System Settings > General > Sharing and configure Internet Sharing. Select the interface that receives internet access and the interface that will serve the console.
  3. Enable the sharing service and connect the PlayStation to the resulting network, or use Ethernet if your Mac and console support it.
  4. Run the console’s network test and check the game’s NAT type. If sharing cannot expose the required interface, use a router or a Windows hotspot instead.

Smart DNS versus a VPN

Smart DNS can help a supported streaming app by directing selected DNS requests through the provider’s system. It usually does not encrypt all console traffic, hide your IP address in the way a VPN tunnel does or protect game traffic from local-network observers. It is therefore a streaming compatibility tool, not a substitute for a gaming VPN.

Use Smart DNS when the objective is a supported streaming application and your provider documents the required DNS addresses for your console. On PS4 or PS5, enter the values during Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection, choose manual DNS settings and then test the application. If the service requires account registration, device authorization or a periodic IP refresh, complete those steps as well.

Use a VPN router or shared VPN connection when you need encrypted traffic, a changed public IP, coverage for online games or protection for all console applications. Some streaming apps actively block VPN and DNS endpoints, so neither method guarantees access to every catalog.

Will a VPN lower your ping?

Sometimes, but there is no universal result. A VPN can improve an inefficient ISP route by sending packets through a better-connected intermediary. It can also add a hop, encryption work and queueing, increasing latency or jitter. TechRadar reported low-jitter ExpressVPN sessions in its cited testing, while other guides emphasize that outcomes depend on distance, ISP routing and server load; those observations are not a standardized cross-provider benchmark.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Evaluate the connection in the game you actually play:

  • Ping: the round-trip time for packets. Lower is generally better, but a stable 55 ms can feel better than a connection that swings between 30 and 100 ms.
  • Jitter: variation in delay. High jitter can cause rubber-banding even when average ping looks acceptable.
  • Packet loss: missing packets cause stutter, voice-chat problems and disconnects.
  • NAT type: a VPN may change how the console reaches peers and can turn an open connection into a restricted one.

Run a baseline without the VPN, then test two or three nearby endpoints and one endpoint close to the game’s region. Keep the protocol, Ethernet/Wi-Fi connection and test time consistent. If every VPN endpoint is slower, disable the VPN for that game; if one endpoint is consistently steadier, save it as the preferred location.

Router and network checks before you buy

  • Firmware: identify the exact hardware revision, not just the product family. VPN support can differ between revisions.
  • Protocol: confirm that the provider offers a profile for the protocol your router can run.
  • IPv4/IPv6: avoid IPv6-only operation because PS5 supports IPv6 connections but not IPv6-only networks.
  • Throughput: low-powered routers may encrypt slowly, reducing speed for the entire household.
  • NAT and port behavior: check the console’s NAT result after connecting; strict NAT can affect matchmaking and voice chat.
  • Device scope: determine whether the router can apply the VPN to one console, a guest network or every device.
  • Kill switch behavior: decide whether you prefer the console to lose internet access when the tunnel drops or to reconnect directly through the ISP.
  • Server locations: choose locations based on the game server and route quality, not marketing claims about the number of countries.

Troubleshooting common failures

The PlayStation cannot obtain an IP address

Restart the router and console, confirm that DHCP is enabled on the LAN and reconnect to the network. If a shared computer is involved, make sure its hotspot or Internet Sharing service is still enabled and that the VPN adapter—not the ordinary Wi-Fi adapter—is being shared.

The console connects but reports IPv6 or DNS errors

Change the router from IPv6-only to dual-stack or IPv4. Re-enter DNS values only when your provider specifically requires manual DNS; otherwise use automatic DNS and test again. Flush or restart the router after changing the setting.

NAT changes to strict

Try a different VPN endpoint, switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet and check whether the provider or router supports a gaming-friendly NAT mode. A VPN cannot guarantee an open NAT because carrier-grade NAT, port filtering and the game’s matchmaking design remain outside your control.

Ping is higher with the VPN

Disconnect and compare a baseline at the same time of day. Then test a nearer endpoint, a location near the game server and another supported protocol. If jitter or packet loss remains worse, use the VPN only for applications that need it or route the console outside the tunnel.

Streaming stops working

Smart DNS and VPN endpoints can be blocked or may require account authorization. Check the provider’s current console instructions, update the registered public IP if required and test the application without the VPN to separate an account or service outage from a network issue.

Which option should you choose?

  1. Choose NordVPN if you want the strongest overall gaming candidate in the cited October 2026 ranking and are prepared to use a router or Windows hotspot.
  2. Choose ExpressVPN if the broadest set of setup routes—router, computer sharing and a streaming-focused DNS option—is most valuable.
  3. Choose Private Internet Access if budget and router capability lead your decision, while verifying current Smart DNS availability for your platform.
  4. Choose CyberGhost if your existing router supports manual OpenVPN configuration and you accept the additional setup and possible processing overhead.
  5. Use a shared computer VPN first if you need a reversible test or cannot alter your router. Move to a router when the computer’s uptime, Wi-Fi range or NAT behavior becomes inconvenient.

For any choice, buy only after confirming the exact router firmware, protocol, IPv4/IPv6 mode and console network requirements. Measure your own game’s ping, jitter, packet loss and NAT type; those local results are more useful than a provider-wide speed number.
