Macworld and TechRadar both name NordVPN their overall Mac pick, while RTINGS separates its recommendations by privacy, free use, streaming and other priorities. The practical choice depends on the Mac app’s controls, the provider’s privacy evidence, your streaming needs and whether you need a free plan.
This guide compares NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, Mullvad and Windscribe using the published Mac-specific testing and recommendations from Macworld, RTINGS and TechRadar. The tests belong to those publications; this article does not claim to have repeated them.

These are attributed editorial findings, not a universal ranking. A provider can be the best match for one requirement and a poor fit for another.
How the Mac VPN recommendations were made
Macworld says it tested 12 leading VPN services on a MacBook Pro. Its measurements covered real-world speed, streaming performance, kill-switch reliability, split tunneling and Apple Silicon optimization. The guide was accessed on October 13, 2026, so its results describe that test set and date rather than a permanent performance guarantee.

RTINGS says its Mac recommendations weigh privacy-policy clarity, security safeguards, pricing fairness, practical features, user feedback, platform limitations and reputation. Its page shows an update dated October 7, 2026. TechRadar describes hours of expert-led testing and publishes a separate Mac list. Because the methods and weighting differ, the lists do not produce one objective winner.
One additional data point comes from NordVPN’s own account of an Artifact Security comparison dated August 10, 2026. The provider reports a 91 score and Platinum rating after a test covering speed, leak protection, website accessibility, feature reliability and connection time. That is a provider-reported account; the underlying Artifact Security report was not independently checked here.
Detailed Mac VPN comparison
NordVPN: the consensus overall pick, with Mac-specific caveats
NordVPN is the only provider selected overall by both Macworld and TechRadar in the cited Mac guides. Macworld reports strong speed and streaming outcomes in its MacBook Pro testing, making it a reasonable starting point if you want one paid service for ordinary browsing, travel and media access.
The Mac implementation matters more than the headline ranking. RTINGS reports that the Mac app does not provide split tunneling. You therefore cannot use the VPN for only selected apps while automatically sending the rest of your traffic outside the tunnel through a built-in Mac control. If you rely on local-network access or need different routing for work and personal apps, check this limitation before subscribing.
RTINGS also documents different kill-switch behavior between the Mac App Store build and the direct-download build. A kill switch is intended to block traffic if the VPN tunnel drops, but the exact behavior can depend on how you installed the app. Before relying on it, install the current build you intend to use, locate its kill-switch setting and test a deliberate disconnect with non-sensitive traffic.
NordVPN is therefore strongest when you value the broadest positive testing coverage and do not require Mac split tunneling. Confirm the current macOS support and app version because both distribution channels and operating-system compatibility can change.
ExpressVPN: straightforward operation and strong streaming results in testing
Macworld characterizes ExpressVPN’s Mac app as clean and reports reliable access to major streaming platforms during its tests. Those are observations from the publication’s test conditions, not a promise that every platform will work from every country after a service changes its blocking rules.
The trade-off identified by Macworld is premium pricing. The article does not establish a current universal price, and subscription rates, introductory offers, currencies and renewal amounts change. Compare the full billing term and renewal price at checkout rather than judging only an advertised first-term figure.

TechRadar’s current text reports 18 independent audits for ExpressVPN and names a KPMG audit published in May 2024 as the most recent it cites. An audit is evidence about the scope and controls examined in that engagement; it is not proof that every future product change or every privacy statement is permanently verified. Read the audit description and the provider’s current policy together.
Choose ExpressVPN when a simple interface and the streaming results reported by Macworld matter more than minimizing subscription cost. Recheck availability for the specific service and region you use.
Proton VPN: the most useful free option, if its restrictions fit
Proton VPN is the clearest free-plan choice in this set. Macworld describes its free tier as offering unlimited data, so you do not face a published monthly data allowance in that plan’s description.
Unlimited data does not mean unlimited capability. RTINGS records three restrictions on the free Mac experience:
- Only one device can be active at a time.
- The service assigns the fastest available server instead of letting free users choose a specific server.
- Official streaming support is reserved for paid subscribers.
Those limits make the free tier suitable for occasional encrypted browsing when location choice and streaming are unimportant. They are a poor fit if you need a particular country, simultaneous devices or dependable access to subscription video services.
RTINGS also notes a kill-switch limitation on Mac during server switching. Test what happens while changing servers before using the connection for sensitive work, and do not assume that a setting behaves identically during every transition. Paid plans remove the free-tier restrictions, but the exact price and renewal terms should be checked at the time of purchase.
Mullvad: privacy controls with important usability trade-offs
RTINGS describes Mullvad’s Mac offering with WireGuard support, a kill switch and split tunneling. WireGuard is a modern VPN protocol; split tunneling can be useful when a local service or a work application must bypass the tunnel. Those controls make Mullvad attractive to technically confident users who want to configure traffic deliberately.
The same RTINGS coverage identifies several limitations. WebKit-related restrictions can affect browser-based behavior, startup exposure risk means traffic could briefly be outside the tunnel while the app starts, and port forwarding is unavailable. RTINGS also characterizes streaming performance as variable. If your priority is reliable media access rather than privacy controls, test the exact platforms and locations you need before committing.

Mullvad is a better match for a user who understands protocol and routing settings than for someone seeking the most effortless streaming experience. Review startup behavior on your Mac and decide whether the lack of port forwarding affects any service you host or access.
Windscribe: flexible budget choice, but check the Mac requirements
RTINGS positions Windscribe as a customizable budget option and distinguishes its free and paid trade-offs. That flexibility can suit a Mac user who wants to experiment with configuration or keep costs down without choosing the same product recommended for overall performance.
The Mac operating-system requirements are part of the decision. Check the current requirement shown by the provider against the macOS version on your Mac before installing. Also compare what the free tier permits with the paid plan’s server selection, locations and other controls; the value depends on which features you actually need, not simply on the existence of a free download.

Mac app features that can change your choice
Split tunneling
Split tunneling lets selected traffic use the VPN while other traffic uses the ordinary connection. It can help when a local printer, corporate network or region-specific app does not work through a tunnel. RTINGS specifically reports that NordVPN’s Mac app lacks this feature, while it lists split tunneling for Mullvad. Check the current Mac app rather than assuming that a feature shown on another platform is present on macOS.
Kill switch behavior
A kill switch is designed to block traffic when the encrypted tunnel fails, reducing the chance of an accidental direct connection. Implementation is not uniform. RTINGS reports different behavior for NordVPN’s App Store and direct-download builds and a limitation for Proton VPN during Mac server switching. After installation, find the control in the app’s settings and test it: connect, start a harmless network task, disconnect the VPN deliberately and confirm whether traffic stops as the app says it should.
App distribution and updates
A provider can distribute a Mac app through the Mac App Store, its own download page or both. The channel can affect permissions, update timing and security controls. NordVPN’s documented kill-switch difference is a concrete example. Record which build you installed, keep it updated and reread the provider’s current macOS notes after a major system upgrade.

Macworld included Apple Silicon optimization in its 12-service test. That means processor architecture was part of the test scope, not that every provider offers identical native performance on every Apple chip. If you use an Apple Silicon Mac, confirm whether the current app is native or relies on translation and compare battery and stability behavior during your own normal workload.

Free VPN plans: what “unlimited” does and does not mean
Proton VPN illustrates why data allowance is only one part of a free-plan comparison. Its free plan is described as unlimited-data, yet RTINGS records one active device, automatic server selection and no official streaming support. A plan can therefore be adequate for secure browsing while unsuitable for choosing a country, connecting several devices or watching a region-limited service.
Before selecting any free Mac VPN, check four items in the current terms:
- Whether data is capped, throttled or unlimited.
- Whether you can choose a server or are assigned one automatically.
- How many devices can be active at once.
- Whether streaming support is included or reserved for paid subscribers.
Do not treat a free tier as a trial of every paid feature. Server choice, streaming access and routing controls may be deliberately different.

Streaming on a Mac: read test results as dated evidence
Macworld reports strong streaming results for NordVPN and reliable access to major platforms for ExpressVPN in its testing. Those findings are useful because they name a test publisher and a Mac context, but streaming services continually change VPN detection and licensing rules. Access can also vary by country, account and the server selected.
RTINGS describes Mullvad’s streaming results as variable and says Proton VPN’s official streaming support is paid-only. These distinctions are more informative than a blanket “works with streaming” label. Make a checklist of the platforms you actually use, test during the provider’s refund or trial terms where available, and avoid assuming that success in one region transfers to another.

A VPN creates an encrypted connection between your Mac and the VPN provider. It can reduce exposure on an untrusted network, but it does not make you anonymous, stop malware or protect every account from phishing. Your trust moves partly from the local network to the VPN operator, so the provider’s policy and technical controls matter.
Separate three kinds of evidence:
- Policy claims: what the provider says it collects, retains or shares.
- Independent audits: an external engagement examining a defined scope at a defined time.
- Practical tests: observations such as leak protection, connection stability or kill-switch behavior under stated conditions.
TechRadar’s current ExpressVPN text reports 18 independent audits and names KPMG’s May 2024 audit as the latest it cites. NordVPN’s August 10, 2026 post reports a 91 score and Platinum rating from an Artifact Security comparison, but that account comes from NordVPN and was not checked against the underlying report here. Use such details as dated evidence, not as permanent proof of every privacy claim.

How to install and configure a VPN on macOS
- Check compatibility. Note your macOS version and whether your Mac uses Apple Silicon or Intel. Compare them with the provider’s current Mac requirement before downloading.
- Choose the distribution channel. If both a Mac App Store build and a direct download exist, note that they may not have identical controls. NordVPN’s documented kill-switch difference shows why this choice matters.
- Install the current app and sign in. Use the account associated with the plan or free tier you selected. Grant only the network permissions macOS requests for the VPN connection.
- Review privacy controls before connecting. Locate the kill switch, protocol choice and split-tunneling controls if the app provides them. Do not assume a control exists because it is available on Windows or iPhone.
- Connect to an appropriate server. For ordinary protection, the app’s recommended nearby server is usually the simplest starting point. For location-sensitive work, verify that the selected country is available on your plan; Proton VPN’s free tier assigns the server automatically.
- Test before relying on it. Check your normal websites, local-network devices and any streaming service you use. Deliberately disconnect once to observe kill-switch behavior, then reconnect and confirm that traffic resumes.
- Enable updates. Keep the app and macOS current, and retest after major updates or a change between App Store and direct-download builds.
Common problems and practical fixes
A local printer or work service stops responding
The VPN route may be preventing access to a local address. If your chosen Mac app supports split tunneling, place only the affected app or destination outside the tunnel and retest. NordVPN’s Mac app is reported not to offer split tunneling, so you may need to disconnect temporarily or choose a provider with the required control.
The internet stops after a brief VPN drop
This may be the kill switch doing its job. Check the app’s status, reconnect and confirm whether the setting is enabled. If behavior differs from what you expect, verify whether you installed an App Store or direct-download build; RTINGS reports that NordVPN’s behavior differs by channel.
A streaming service shows an error
Try a different server permitted by your plan, clear the service’s app or browser session and check whether the service is supported in your country. Streaming tests are time- and region-specific. Proton VPN’s free tier does not include official streaming support, and RTINGS calls Mullvad’s streaming performance variable.

Automatic server assignment is a documented Proton VPN free-tier restriction. If a particular location is essential, compare the paid plan or select a service whose free terms explicitly provide country choice.
The Mac app will not install
Recheck the macOS requirement, processor architecture and distribution channel. Remove an outdated build only after recording your settings, then install the current version from the provider’s official source and restart macOS if the network extension remains unavailable.
Prices, renewals and plan terms
VPN pricing is volatile. Introductory rates, billing currency, plan length, taxes and renewal prices can change independently of the technical features described in a guide. Before entering payment details, record the total for the first term, the recurring renewal amount, the billing interval, the number of simultaneous devices and the refund or cancellation conditions shown for your country.
Macworld specifically characterizes ExpressVPN as premium-priced and describes long-term-plan trade-offs for some alternatives, but the cited pages do not establish a stable price that should be repeated here. Treat any price displayed at checkout on the day you subscribe as the authoritative figure.

Which Mac VPN should you choose?
- Choose NordVPN if you want the overall pick shared by Macworld and TechRadar, strong Macworld speed and streaming results, and you can live without Mac split tunneling.
- Choose ExpressVPN if a clean Mac interface and Macworld’s tested access to major platforms outweigh premium pricing.
- Choose Proton VPN if unlimited-data free use is your priority and one active device, automatic server choice and no official free-tier streaming are acceptable.
- Choose Mullvad if WireGuard, split tunneling and privacy controls matter more than startup exposure concerns, absent port forwarding or consistently predictable streaming.
- Choose Windscribe if you want a configurable budget option and its current macOS requirements and free/paid feature split match your needs.
Whichever option you select, judge the Mac app you will actually install—not a feature list for another operating system—and verify current compatibility, privacy documentation, streaming support and renewal terms immediately before paying.
