For a free VPN with Japan in its server network, Proton VPN is the clearest documented option—but its Free plan does not let you reliably choose Japan on demand. If you need a dependable Japanese IP address or want to stream Japanese services from abroad, compare paid plans and verify that the provider’s current Japan endpoint works with the service you use.

This guide compares seven options for different needs: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access, CyberGhost, and Windscribe, plus a free-tier option in Proton VPN. The selection reflects the available comparison guides and provider documentation, not a universal ranking or hands-on speed test.

What is the best VPN for Japan?

There is no single best choice for every use. Start with the job you need the VPN to do: get a Japanese IP while abroad, keep a home-country IP while traveling in Japan, or protect traffic on public Wi-Fi. A provider having servers in Japan does not by itself mean you can select a Japanese location on every plan, stream a particular service, or connect to a working endpoint from your current network.

These seven services are a practical shortlist, not a performance ranking. Security.org’s Japan guide, updated August 25, 2026, says its recommendations draw on testing more than 50 VPNs, 2,500+ research hours, and 300 speed tests. Those are Security.org’s reported methods, not measurements made for this article. VPN LIFE’s October 3, 2026 recount found Japan locations listed by all seven providers it tracked, with 13 locations in total; that count reflects provider-published lists, not a guarantee that each endpoint is reachable.

VPN Why it is on the shortlist Japan-location evidence What to verify before subscribing
NordVPN Included in current Japan comparison guides and VPN LIFE’s tracked provider list. VPN LIFE counted two Japan locations on October 3, 2026. Current city choices, plan price, device limit, privacy-audit scope, and service compatibility.
ExpressVPN Included in current Japan comparison guides and VPN LIFE’s tracked provider list. VPN LIFE counted four Japan locations on October 3, 2026. Current location availability, plan price, device limit, privacy evidence, and refund terms.
Proton VPN Official documentation confirms Japan is included among Free locations, with important selection and streaming limits. VPN LIFE counted two Japan locations on October 3, 2026; Proton also lists Japan on its server page. Whether the Free plan’s automatic selection meets your needs; paid-plan terms if you need to choose Japan or stream reliably.
Private Internet Access Included in current Japan comparison guides and VPN LIFE’s tracked provider list. VPN LIFE counted two Japan locations on October 3, 2026. Current city choices, device limit, plan and renewal price, privacy evidence, and refund terms.
CyberGhost Included in current Japan comparison guides and VPN LIFE’s tracked provider list. VPN LIFE counted one Japan location on October 3, 2026. Whether its current endpoint meets your location or streaming needs, plus plan and refund terms.
Windscribe Included in current Japan comparison guides; Top10VPN lists it among its free choices. VPN LIFE counted one Japan location on October 3, 2026. Which Japan locations and features are available on the plan you intend to use, along with data, device, and refund terms.

Provider lists and plan terms can change. VPN LIFE cautions that a published location is not a promise that a given server is reachable from your location at that moment. Check the provider’s current location list and relevant terms before paying.

Is there a free VPN with a Japan server?

Yes. Proton VPN’s official support pages list Japan among the countries available on its Free plan. But that does not mean you can request a Japanese IP whenever you want: the app initially connects to a fastest free server, and changing servers selects another country at random, subject to a cooldown. Proton says the paid plans allow users to select a country.

Proton also distinguishes server access from streaming support. It says free servers are not blocked from streaming, but guarantees streaming access only on paid plans; its Japan page identifies Japanese streaming-optimized servers as paid features. A free connection may suit general browsing or a trial of the service, but it is a poor fit if you must have a Japanese IP at a particular moment or need consistent access to a streaming platform. Proton’s Free plan supports one connected device at a time.

How can I get a Japanese IP address?

  1. Choose a plan that explicitly offers Japan. Confirm Japan is available on the exact tier you plan to buy, not just somewhere in the provider’s overall network.
  2. Check location control. Look for a Japan country selection in the app. A country listed on a free plan may still be selected automatically rather than manually.
  3. Connect to Japan in the VPN app. After connection, check the app’s displayed location and use a reputable IP-checking service if you need to confirm the apparent country.
  4. Test the site or app you need. A Japanese IP does not guarantee that a streaming, banking, or other service will accept the connection. If access is essential, test the intended service during the provider’s refund period and review its current terms.

If you are traveling abroad and need a Japanese IP, choose a plan with manual Japan selection. If you are in Japan and want a home-country IP, select a server in that country instead; Japan server counts will not answer that need.

Can I watch Japanese Netflix from abroad with a VPN?

Possibly, but no server count proves that Netflix Japan—or Abema, TVer, or another named platform—will work for you. Streaming services can change how they detect VPN traffic, and a provider’s endpoint may be unavailable or blocked at the time you connect. Proton explicitly guarantees streaming access only on paid plans; that guarantee does not establish access to every Japanese service or uninterrupted access over time.

  • Check whether the plan offers a selectable Japan location and whether the provider currently describes streaming support for your target service.
  • Test the exact platform and account from the country where you will use it; general claims about streaming are not proof of access to a particular catalog.
  • Review refund eligibility and deadlines before subscribing, then test promptly. Refund terms vary by provider and plan.

Top10VPN’s Japan guide, updated September 18, 2026, compares paid and free choices, but its recommendations are not a guarantee that a given endpoint will work for every user or service.

Do I need a VPN for public Wi-Fi in Japan?

A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server, which can help protect data on public Wi-Fi. It does not make every activity private or safe: websites and apps can still identify you through account logins, cookies, or other data, and a VPN cannot protect you from phishing or malware. For public networks, use HTTPS, keep your device and apps updated, and avoid entering sensitive information into sites or apps you do not trust.

For this use, a Japanese IP address or streaming access may be irrelevant. Compare device coverage, ease of use, and the plan’s privacy evidence instead of choosing solely by Japan location count.

How to compare the seven options

Japan locations and city choice

VPN LIFE’s October 3, 2026 review of provider-published lists counted four Japan locations for ExpressVPN, two each for NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Private Internet Access, and one each for CyberGhost and Windscribe. These figures are a dated count by that publisher, not independent verification of server operation, performance, or streaming acceptance. Check the provider’s live list because locations may change.

Privacy claims and audits

“No logs” is a provider claim, not automatically independent proof. Before choosing, look for a named independent auditor, the date and scope of the audit, and the specific logging or infrastructure claims it examined. Also check the provider’s jurisdiction and the security features in the apps for your devices. The available material does not establish comparable audit scopes or app-security details for all seven providers, so it would be misleading to declare one the most private on that basis.

Price, devices, data, and refunds

Prices, renewal rates, device limits, data allowances, and refund eligibility are plan-specific and can change. The available provider comparisons do not establish a consistent, current set of these values for all seven services. Compare them directly on each provider’s checkout and terms pages before committing, especially if you need multiple devices or a refund option to test streaming.

Speed and reliability

Speed depends on your location, connection, chosen endpoint, time of day, and VPN protocol. Security.org’s reported 300 speed tests belong to its own evaluation, and VPN LIFE’s “tested on Tokyo networks” description is that publisher’s work. Neither should be presented as a result measured for this article. For your own use, test the service from the network and device you expect to use, and check that the specific task—video, browsing, or remote access—works acceptably.

Which Japan VPN should you choose?

  • For a free option: Proton VPN is the best-documented candidate here for Japan server availability, but its Free plan does not guarantee manual selection of Japan.
  • For a Japanese IP on demand: shortlist a paid plan that explicitly lets you select Japan, then verify the current app location list and the site or service you need.
  • For Japanese streaming abroad: treat each service as a separate compatibility check; a Japan server or general streaming claim is not proof that a specific catalog will work.
  • For public Wi-Fi: prioritize device support, app usability, and transparent privacy evidence; a Japan endpoint is not necessarily important.

Compare provider terms immediately before purchase. Server availability and streaming access are operational details that can change, while the dated location counts above are snapshots rather than promises of future service.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
