For no-cost privacy use, a free VPN may be enough if you can accept its server, data, and device limits—but free access does not guarantee an Indonesian connection.
The services below are options to investigate, not the result of a matched six-provider test. The cited guides use different methods, and they do not establish comparable speeds, reliability, or current prices for all six services.

Start with the location you need
A VPN sends your traffic through a provider-operated server, so websites see the network address associated with that server rather than your usual one. The country selector and plan determine which locations you can use. This can help with a location-specific connection, but it does not make you anonymous in every context or prevent all tracking, account identification, malware, or censorship.
Recommended Free Tools
- Need an Indonesian IP: Confirm Indonesia appears as a selectable location on the exact plan and device you intend to use.
- Need a free privacy connection: A free plan with a nearby supported location may work, but it may not provide an Indonesian IP.
- Need streaming access: Check both the VPN’s available country and the platform’s current rules. Catalog access and VPN blocking can change, and a result for one account or region is not a guarantee for another.
Gizmodo reported that none of the four permanent free plans it tested had Indonesian servers, and none opened Vidio or Netflix Indonesia in its tests. Those are that publication’s findings, not a guarantee about every free VPN or future service behavior: Gizmodo’s free Indonesia VPN comparison.

Free VPNs to consider for basic use
Proton VPN Free
Proton’s privacy policy says its free service is covered by its no-logs policy and states: “All Proton VPN servers are encrypted and we do not log VPN session data.” This is the provider’s own policy statement, not independent proof of every aspect of the service. Proton also says free service generally has no speed restriction, while reserving the right to restrict excessive use to preserve service quality. Read its privacy policy and confirm the current app options before relying on a particular location.
Tom’s Guide reported that, as of May 2026, Proton VPN Free had 2,000 servers in 10 countries, including Singapore but not Indonesia. That footprint is time-bound and should not be treated as a current guarantee: Tom’s Guide’s free VPN guide.

Windscribe and PrivadoVPN
Recent free VPN comparisons include both services as candidates, but their exact current free-plan allowances and location lists need checking. Before choosing either, verify the monthly data cap, whether the relevant country is available on the free tier, the number of devices you can connect, and the provider’s privacy and audit disclosures. A free-plan comparison is available from Gizmodo and Tom’s Guide.
Paid options if Indonesia or wider location choice matters
NordVPN
NordVPN maintains an official Indonesia server page. Treat that as an indication to verify the location, not proof that every plan, device, or service location has identical access. Check the plan and app you intend to use before subscribing.

ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s Trust Center lists external audits, including a KPMG audit of privacy commitments in June 2025. The company also publishes biannual transparency reports about user-data requests received by its legal department. These disclosures provide evidence to examine; they are not a blanket guarantee that a service is risk-free. See the ExpressVPN Trust Center.
How to compare plans before paying
- Confirm the endpoint: Open the provider’s current location list and verify Indonesia—or the other country you need—is available on the exact plan and platform.
- Check limits that affect your use: Compare data allowance, server selection, speed restrictions, and simultaneous device rules. For a phone and laptop, make sure the plan permits both connections at once.
- Read the privacy evidence: Look at the policy language, what data is covered, the audit’s scope and date, and whether the report itself is accessible. A provider’s policy and a third-party audit are useful but different kinds of evidence.
- Check the full price terms: Before checkout, review the plan length, amount charged upfront, renewal price, currency, taxes, and refund conditions. Long-term prices shown in editorial guides may not match an Indonesian buyer’s checkout total or renewal amount.
- Verify streaming separately: Confirm current compatibility for the country and platform you want. A VPN’s server listing alone does not establish that a particular catalog will load.
Top10VPN’s Indonesia guide names paid candidates, while Tom’s Guide also discusses Indonesia VPN options. Their coverage is useful for finding services to investigate, but it does not provide a single, comparable test of six providers: Top10VPN’s Indonesia guide and Tom’s Guide’s Indonesia VPN guide. Neither a ranking nor a displayed price should substitute for checking present plan terms.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Provider pages establish what companies currently advertise, while editorial tests report results under their own conditions. Neither kind of evidence supports a universal promise about speed, reliability, anonymity, or streaming access. The sources cited here do not establish a harmonized speed test across six services, verified current prices and renewal rates for Indonesian buyers, or the current legal status of VPN use in Indonesia. Consult official Indonesian sources for legal questions rather than relying on a provider or comparison page.
