It can still be useful if your ISP’s route to a game server is poor, if you need to hide your public IP from other players, or if you want VPN protection on a device that supports it. The right choice depends on your game region, measured ping and jitter, device, and willingness to configure a console—not a universal “fastest VPN” ranking.
Will a VPN make your ping lower?
Usually, a VPN does not lower ping by default. Your traffic travels to a VPN server before it reaches the game, which can add distance and processing. In a particular case, a VPN may improve the route if your normal ISP path is inefficient or is being throttled, but the result depends on the provider, server, game region, and time of day. Top10VPN cautions that VPNs do not inherently speed up a connection or reduce lag: its 2026 gaming guide.

For responsive play, compare latency (ping), jitter (how much latency varies), and packet loss—not just headline download speed. Security.org recommends aiming for less than 20–40 ms of added ping for competitive gaming; that is the guide’s recommendation, not a universal technical standard: Security.org’s gaming VPN guide.
Test the route you actually play on
- With the VPN off, record ping, jitter if your game shows it, packet loss, disconnects, and throughput while connected to the game region you normally use.
- Connect to a VPN server near that game’s matchmaking or data-center region. A nearby exit is a sensible starting point, but the provider’s closest server is not necessarily the best route.
- Repeat the same measurements in the same game and region. Test once at a busy time and once under ordinary conditions, then compare stability as well as average ping.
- Keep the VPN only if the results solve your specific problem without introducing worse jitter, packet loss, or disconnections.
Reviews’ latency figures should not be treated as a head-to-head race unless their locations, base connections, protocols, servers, games, and test dates match. Security.org reports PC latency of 100 ms for NordVPN, 72 ms for Surfshark, 95 ms for Proton VPN, 98 ms for PIA, 102 ms for ExpressVPN, and 84 ms for CyberGhost; its mobile figures are 87, 94, 89, 38, 82, and 97 ms respectively. These are that guide’s reported measurements, not a prediction of your ping or directly comparable results from another lab.

Which VPN is best for gaming in 2026?
There is no single winner across the 2026 reviews. Security.org and Top10VPN rank different services first and choose different free options. Treat these as starting points for a trial on your own game route, not guarantees of low ping.
| Service | What the 2026 reviews favor it for | Useful qualification |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Professional gamers and streamers, per Security.org; overall pick at TechRadar; runner-up and lowest-ping paid option at Top10VPN. | TechRadar reports NordLynx throughput around 1,000 Mbps on nearby servers and roughly 626 Mbps on US connections in its own tests. These are lab-specific throughput results, not evidence of a particular game ping or a guarantee of no lag. |
| ExpressVPN | Overall gaming pick at Top10VPN and console choice at Security.org. | Console suitability still depends on the specific supported setup; consoles do not generally have native VPN apps. |
| Surfshark | PC gaming at Security.org and mobile gaming at Top10VPN. | Check the server route and protocol on your own device and game. |
| Proton VPN | Security.org’s free pick. | Proton says its Plus servers span over 140 countries and its network has 20,000 servers, with no bandwidth or data limits; these are vendor claims on its gaming page, not independent measurements. Confirm current plan and server access. |
| Windscribe | Top10VPN’s free option. | Top10VPN’s August 2026 guide reports a 10 GB monthly allowance on the free plan. Verify the current limit and server constraints before relying on it. |
| PIA | Mobile gaming at Security.org. | The cited ranking does not establish that it will have lower latency on your route. |
| CyberGhost | Mac gaming at Security.org. | The cited ranking does not establish that it will have lower latency on your route. |
Security.org says it tested more than 60 VPNs over 1,400 hours with eight VPN experts. Top10VPN says it tested 59 services on computers, smartphones, and consoles across games including Apex Legends, Fortnite, PUBG, and Warzone, with more than 30,000 testing hours. Those are each publisher’s descriptions of its testing; differing methods mean the totals do not make the rankings directly comparable.

What matters when choosing a gaming VPN?
Ping, jitter, and stability on your region
Pick a provider with servers near the game’s relevant region, then test. Average ping alone can conceal spikes; jitter, packet loss, and disconnects can make play feel unreliable even when a speed test looks strong.
Protocol and device support
WireGuard and related protocols are worth checking when speed is a priority. Proton recommends WireGuard and describes it as lightweight and fast, but that vendor guidance does not prove it will outperform every other protocol on every device or route: Proton VPN’s gaming guidance. Choose a protocol your device and VPN app actually support, and compare observed results.

Free-plan limits and current terms
Free options can be useful for a short route test, but check monthly data allowances, server access, and any plan restrictions. Top10VPN’s reported Windscribe allowance and Proton’s stated limits are review and vendor findings respectively, not a substitute for checking current terms. Prices, renewal terms, server availability, and feature limits change; the cited comparisons do not establish a current price for each provider.
Can I use a VPN on Xbox or PlayStation?
Xbox and PlayStation do not offer native VPN apps, according to Security.org. Console players can use a virtual router, VPN-compatible router hardware, or SmartDNS, but these approaches are not interchangeable and may have different protection and configuration behavior. Check that the VPN provider supports the method and that it works with your router, console, and network configuration before choosing a service.

- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets
- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
- Virtual router: Share a VPN connection from a computer with the console, if the computer and provider support it.
- VPN router: Configure a compatible router so connected devices use its VPN connection; confirm supported firmware and provider setup instructions.
- SmartDNS: A separate configuration option identified by Security.org. Do not assume it provides the same traffic encryption or IP-masking behavior as a VPN tunnel.
PC and mobile players can usually start with the provider’s app, select a nearby exit server, and run the same-game comparison. Console setup can require more configuration, so the lowest review latency is not the only useful criterion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes a VPN protect against DDoS attacks?
A VPN replaces the public IP address visible to other players with the VPN server’s address, which can make direct targeting of your home connection harder. It does not guarantee that a DDoS attack will be prevented, and it does not make you anonymous to the VPN provider. Top10VPN likewise cautions against claims that VPNs stop DDoS attacks: its gaming guide. Use a VPN as one layer of protection, not a promise of immunity.

When should you avoid using a VPN for gaming?
- Your baseline connection is stable and the VPN adds ping, jitter, packet loss, or disconnections without solving another problem.
- Your game or platform rules restrict VPN use, or the connection could trigger account security checks. Review the applicable rules before connecting.
- You are considering a VPN to evade a ban, manipulate matchmaking, or obtain early access to regional releases. Do not use it to bypass a game’s or platform’s terms.
- Your console setup is unsupported or too complex for your network, and the intended benefit does not justify the configuration effort.
Potential uses such as changing a poor route, addressing throttling, or dealing with certain IP restrictions are conditional rather than guaranteed. A VPN also does not shield account credentials from phishing, protect a compromised device, or guarantee privacy from the VPN provider.
