Best VPNs for Gaming in 2026: Picks, Trade-Offs, and Setup

For gaming, the best VPN is the one that gives you a stable route to your game’s matchmaking servers without adding unacceptable latency. A VPN does not generally lower ping: it changes your route and adds processing, so it may help in a particular routing or access problem—or make play worse. The evidence available supports several candidates, not a defensible ranking of eight providers. Here are the options with gaming-specific evidence, what their comparisons do and do not establish, and how to test one on your own connection.

When a gaming VPN helps—and when it does not

Ping measures the delay between your device and the game server; jitter is variation in that delay. For responsive play, consistent latency and a stable connection are more useful than a headline download-speed figure. A VPN adds a stop between you and the game, and the result depends on the VPN server, the route beyond it, and the game’s matchmaking location.

A VPN may be worth testing if your ISP’s route to a particular game server is poor, if you need to reach a moderate NAT type, or if you are dealing with an inherited IP ban. These are conditional use cases, not guaranteed fixes. A VPN can also cause extra lag, instability, or mid-match disconnections. Top10VPN’s Simon Migliano cautions against broad claims that VPNs speed up internet, reduce lag, stop DDoS attacks, or unlock early releases: “A VPN does none of those things.” (Top10VPN)

For protection, a VPN masks your public IP address, which can reduce direct exposure to attacks aimed at that address. It does not guarantee DDoS prevention, and it cannot stop every attack or solve problems with the game service itself. Check the game’s rules and account policies before using a VPN: some services may treat VPN use or a location change as suspicious, and a VPN is not a reliable way to evade enforcement.

Gaming VPN options supported by the available comparisons

The services below have named gaming-specific coverage or a relevant test result. They are not a complete, apples-to-apples ranking: the sources use different methods, routes, and platforms. Check current plan terms at checkout; current prices and renewal rates are not established by the comparisons cited here.

Service What the gaming evidence says What to keep in mind
ExpressVPN Top10VPN names it its overall gaming pick and discusses console setup options. TechRadar reports gaming tests and performance for Lightway Turbo. (Top10VPN; TechRadar) Results on an individual game route can differ; the cited coverage does not establish what ping you will get. Verify current plan and renewal terms before buying.
NordVPN Top10VPN reports the lowest ping among its paid picks. TechRadar highlights NordLynx. A NordVPN-published summary of Artifact Security’s 2026 comparison reports a 91 overall score and the test’s only Platinum rating. (Top10VPN; TechRadar; NordVPN’s summary of the Artifact Security test) The 91 score and Platinum rating belong to one test round summarized on the provider’s site, not a promise for every location, game, or route.
Windscribe Top10VPN names it a free gaming choice. (Top10VPN) Top10VPN says its 10 GB monthly allowance does not go far. Confirm current plan terms, including any data limit, before relying on it for regular play.
Proton VPN It was one of five services in Artifact Security’s 2026 comparison, as summarized by NordVPN. That summary reports 5.93 ms average jitter for Proton VPN in the test. Proton’s official page describes WireGuard support. (NordVPN’s summary of the Artifact Security test; Proton VPN) The jitter figure is a result from that test, not an expectation for your connection. The available gaming-specific comparisons provide less basis for placing Proton VPN alongside the other picks.
CyberGhost Included in gaming comparisons by TechRadar and Security.org. (TechRadar; Security.org) The cited material does not provide enough independently comparable gaming metrics to support a firm placement here.
Private Internet Access Included in gaming comparisons by TechRadar and Security.org. (TechRadar; Security.org) The cited material does not provide enough independently comparable gaming metrics to support a firm placement here.

These sources do not substantiate an eighth choice or a fair eight-provider ranking. Top10VPN says its 2026 guide tested 59 VPN services across computers, smartphones, and game consoles, with 30,000+ hours of cumulative testing; those figures describe its guide’s testing, not a shared test of every service in this table. How to compare VPNs for your game

Do not treat unrelated download-speed results as a prediction of in-game ping. Compare measurements made on routes and conditions relevant to your own play, and consider the whole setup rather than protocol names or server counts alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ping and jitter: Check the game’s displayed ping and look for stable results across repeated sessions. A low average can still feel poor if latency fluctuates or packets drop.
  • Route and location: Choose a VPN server geographically close to the game’s matchmaking server, not just close to your home. A nearby VPN server cannot guarantee a good route after traffic leaves that server.
  • Local and distant play: If you use multiple game regions, test each region separately. A route that works well for one match server may be poor for another.
  • Protocol and platform: Confirm that the provider offers a suitable protocol on your device. Protocol support and performance can vary by app and operating system.
  • Security and IP exposure: Consider whether masking your IP addresses a specific risk you face. A VPN does not make an account anonymous to a game provider or guarantee protection from attacks.
  • Full cost: Compare the amount charged at checkout and the renewal terms, not just an advertised introductory price. Those terms can change.

Artifact Security’s 2026 test, as summarized by NordVPN, compared five services across 55 routes originating in Frankfurt, London, Singapore, New York, and San Francisco. Its reported scores and jitter values are useful as one comparative round, but they do not predict an individual player’s route. (NordVPN’s summary of the Artifact Security test) Security.org recommends an added-ping range of 20 to 40 ms for competitive gaming; treat that as Security.org’s recommendation, not a universal threshold for every game or player. How to test a VPN before using it in a match

  1. Record your baseline. With the VPN disconnected, play the same game and region you intend to use. Note the game-reported ping and any jitter, packet loss, or disconnects it displays.
  2. Choose a nearby VPN endpoint. Start with a server near the game’s matchmaking location. If you are addressing a specific routing problem, test the region that uses that route rather than selecting a distant server simply because it is available.
  3. Use the same conditions. Connect through the VPN and repeat the test in the same game region, preferably at a similar time and on the same network. Compare stability and latency, not just download speed.
  4. Try another nearby route if needed. A different VPN server or protocol may change the route. Keep only a configuration that consistently improves the problem you are trying to solve.
  5. Stop if play gets worse. If ping rises, jitter increases, or the connection drops, disconnect the VPN and return to your baseline. Do not assume that a different provider or server will necessarily fix the game’s underlying network issue.

Using a VPN with PlayStation or Xbox

Console support is part of the decision: a provider may not offer a native app for your console. Security.org lists three alternatives: configure a virtual router on a computer, use VPN-capable router hardware, or use Smart DNS. (Security.org)

  • Virtual router: A computer shares its VPN connection with the console. This avoids installing a VPN app on the console, but requires a suitable computer and extra setup.
  • VPN router: The router runs the VPN connection, allowing compatible devices on the network to use it. Setup and performance depend on the router and VPN configuration.
  • Smart DNS: This can help with location-based access without routing all console traffic through an encrypted VPN tunnel. It is not equivalent to a VPN for privacy or IP masking.

These approaches have different privacy and routing properties. Follow the provider’s current setup instructions for your hardware, and test ping on the console itself: a configuration that connects successfully is not necessarily a good gaming route.

Which option should you try?

  • For a first paid option to test: ExpressVPN has the clearest overall-pick designation in Top10VPN’s gaming guide, with console setup coverage. That is a source-specific recommendation, not proof it will be fastest for your route.
  • If low ping is your main comparison point: NordVPN is reported by Top10VPN as the lowest-ping paid pick, while its 2026 test result comes from a separate, provider-published summary. Test it against your own baseline.
  • If you want a free option: Windscribe is Top10VPN’s named free choice, but its cited 10 GB monthly allowance may constrain regular gaming.
  • If you are comparing other established candidates: Proton VPN, CyberGhost, and Private Internet Access appear in the cited material, but the evidence here is not consistent enough to claim they rank in a particular order.
