What makes a VPN suitable for Deluge?
Deluge is a BitTorrent client, so the relevant VPN features are P2P permission, protection against traffic escaping the encrypted connection, and—if you need it—port forwarding for incoming peer connections. A VPN feature list alone does not prove that a particular Deluge version is compatible or that its settings are configured correctly.

- P2P policy: Check whether torrent traffic is allowed and whether that permission applies to all servers or only designated ones.
- Operating-system support: Confirm support for the device running Deluge. Proton VPN’s support documentation lists paid-plan P2P servers for Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux, but does not give Deluge-specific setup instructions (Proton VPN P2P support).
- Connection protection: A kill switch can block traffic if the VPN disconnects. If Deluge offers network-interface binding in your installed version, binding it to the VPN interface can add a separate safeguard. Proton warns that choosing the ordinary internet interface can reveal your real IP even when its kill switch is on.
- Port forwarding: This can make incoming peer connections possible and improve reachability, but it is not required for every torrent. Availability and setup differ by provider and server.
- Privacy and performance evidence: Look for verifiable privacy information and read speed results in the context of the reviewer’s test method and date. A reviewer’s result is not a guarantee of your speed with Deluge.

What Proton VPN’s documentation establishes
P2P access and platforms
Proton says its dedicated P2P servers are available on all paid plans and lists Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux. Its product page says the free plan does not provide dedicated P2P servers for torrent downloads and uploads. These are Proton’s own policy and product statements, not independent performance findings. See its P2P support article and torrenting page.
Kill switch and Deluge binding
Proton explains that peers see the VPN server’s IP address and recommends binding a torrent client to the VPN network interface when the client supports that setting. Its example is qBittorrent; the documentation does not establish Deluge menu labels or a Deluge setup procedure. Do not assume that a setting or path shown for another client applies to your Deluge version. If you use interface binding, confirm the correct VPN interface using documentation for your operating system and Deluge release, then test that traffic stops when the VPN connection is unavailable.

Port forwarding
Proton says port forwarding requires connecting to a P2P server and entering the assigned port in the torrent application. The assigned port usually changes after reconnecting, so the client may need updating. Opening a path for incoming connections has a security trade-off, and forwarding does not guarantee faster downloads: its value depends on peer availability, connection state, plan, and application behavior. - Check the P2P rule for the exact plan and server. Read the provider’s current policy rather than inferring torrent permission from a generic VPN subscription or a reviewer summary.
- Match the service to the device running Deluge. Confirm that the provider supports that operating system and that Deluge itself has the network controls you intend to use.
- Decide whether port forwarding matters to you. If you need incoming connections, verify the eligible servers and whether the assigned port changes. If you do not need it, do not treat its absence as an automatic disqualifier.
- Evaluate privacy and interruption handling. Review available privacy evidence and understand what the kill switch blocks. Where supported, client binding can provide an additional layer, but only if the correct interface is selected.
- Interpret speed claims by their method and date. Reviewer measurements describe particular tests; they do not predict a guaranteed result on your connection, location, server, or torrent.
Use Deluge only for lawful sharing
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol; using it does not itself make a transfer lawful. Downloading or sharing copyrighted material without permission may be illegal depending on jurisdiction and may lead to civil claims. A VPN does not grant copyright permission. RTINGS discusses this distinction in its torrenting safety guide; check the law that applies where you are and use Deluge for material you are authorized to share.
