NordVPN is the best all-round VPN for Austria in 2026 if you want dependable Austrian streaming access, strong everyday performance and a simple app. Proton VPN is the better privacy-led alternative and the fastest option in EXPERTE’s Austrian test. Surfshark suits households and travelers who want broad device coverage at a value price, while Mullvad is a specialist choice for users who prioritize privacy over streaming features and network size.
Best VPNs for Austria at a glance
| VPN | Austria/IP and streaming evidence | Measured speed | Privacy and infrastructure evidence | Price and device limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | EXP ERTE’s 2026 Austrian testing found it just behind Proton VPN on speed and reliably unblocking ORF, ServusTV and ATV. | Peak of 1,256 Mbps in TechRadar’s 2026 test. This is a publisher-specific measurement, not a guaranteed connection speed. | TechRadar’s 2026 review ranks it first overall for streaming, security and everyday use. | TechRadar listed a promotional price of $3.09 per month in 2026. Renewal pricing and simultaneous-device limit were not stated in the cited comparisons. |
| Proton VPN | Proton documents Austrian servers and Austrian-IP streaming access. EXP ERTE’s 2026 Austrian test placed it first for speed and found reliable access to ORF, ServusTV and ATV. | EXP ERTE reported the fastest result in its Austrian comparison; the supplied evidence does not state a universal Mbps figure. | Official documentation lists WireGuard, 10 Gbps servers, open-source apps and third-party audits. | Price, renewal cost and simultaneous-device limit were not stated in the cited material. |
| Surfshark | Its broad network can be useful when you need many location choices, but the supplied Austrian test evidence does not establish ORF, ServusTV or ATV success. | Peak of 1,615 Mbps in TechRadar’s 2026 test, measured under that publisher’s conditions. | Surfshark reported 4,500+ servers in 100 countries in 2026. TechRadar noted an independent infrastructure audit in January 2026. | Positioned as a value and broad-device option. The cited material does not state a renewal price or exact device limit. |
| Mullvad | Independent Austrian testing describes a smaller network and weaker streaming breadth, so it is less suitable when Austrian television access is the main goal. | Not stated in the supplied Austrian comparison. | Privacy-oriented, but the test notes fewer features and weaker support than the leading alternatives. | Price, renewal cost and simultaneous-device limit were not stated in the cited material. |
Which Austrian VPN should you choose?
Choose NordVPN for the best overall balance
NordVPN is the safest default when one subscription needs to cover ordinary browsing, streaming and travel. TechRadar’s 2026 review placed it first overall and recorded a 1,256 Mbps peak in its own testing. EXP ERTE’s Austrian evaluation found reliable access to ORF, ServusTV and ATV, with speed just behind Proton VPN.
The $3.09-per-month figure reported by TechRadar was a promotional 2026 price, not a permanent or renewal price. Check the checkout total, billing term and renewal rate before paying.
Choose Proton VPN for privacy and the strongest Austrian-IP performance
Proton VPN is the leading alternative when privacy architecture and Austrian performance matter more than getting the lowest introductory price. Proton’s Austria documentation describes Austrian servers, WireGuard, 10 Gbps servers, open-source applications and third-party audits. In EXP ERTE’s Austrian test it led on speed and reliably reached ORF, ServusTV and ATV.

That combination makes Proton the strongest pick for someone who wants an Austrian address while keeping an auditable, open-source-oriented app stack. The cited material does not establish a specific simultaneous-device allowance or renewal price.
Choose Surfshark for value and many device types
Surfshark is the practical choice for a household, traveler or mixed-device setup where network breadth is useful. Its 2026 page advertised more than 4,500 servers in 100 countries, and TechRadar measured a 1,615 Mbps peak in its own test. TechRadar also noted an independent infrastructure audit in January 2026.

Do not treat that speed result as a promise for your Austrian connection, and do not assume Austrian streaming access from the global server count alone: the supplied Austrian testing did not establish Surfshark’s results for ORF, ServusTV or ATV.
Choose Mullvad for a privacy-first specialist setup
Mullvad makes sense when minimizing features and emphasizing a privacy-focused service is more important than having the largest network or the broadest streaming compatibility. Independent Austrian testing characterized its network as relatively small and its feature set and support as weaker than the leading choices. It is therefore a niche recommendation rather than the default VPN for watching Austrian television abroad.

How to get an Austrian IP address
A VPN gives your device the public IP address of the VPN server. To simulate an Austrian IP, connect to a server located in Austria before opening the site or app you want to use.
- Install the provider’s current app for your operating system and sign in.
- Open the server or location list and select Austria. App labels vary; look for a country list, map or search field.
- Press Connect and wait for the app to show an active connection.
- Open the target website or streaming app only after the VPN connection is active. If it was already open, close and relaunch it so it creates a new session.
- Verify the displayed location with an IP-checking service. If the address is not Austrian, disconnect and select another Austrian server.
For better throughput, use the provider’s WireGuard option when available. Proton specifically documents WireGuard support. If a service or network blocks WireGuard, switch to another supported protocol rather than repeatedly reconnecting to the same server.

Watching ORF TVthek, ServusTV and ATV from abroad
EXP ERTE’s 2026 Austrian testing found NordVPN and Proton VPN reliably accessing ORF, ServusTV and ATV. Connect to Austria before loading the service, and keep the connection stable while playback starts.
Streaming platforms can change their VPN detection. A failure does not necessarily mean the VPN has no Austrian servers: try a different Austrian endpoint, reconnect, clear the service’s session or restart its app. If access still fails, the platform may be blocking that provider’s current IP range. Mullvad’s smaller network and weaker streaming breadth make it the least attractive option when television access is your primary requirement. The supplied evidence does not establish equivalent results for Surfshark.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
A VPN changes your apparent network location; it does not grant a subscription, remove regional licensing restrictions or authorize copying and redistribution. Use each service under its terms and with the rights required for the programme.
Privacy, protocols and audit evidence
Protocols
Selectra’s Austria comparison identifies WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2 as relevant VPN protocols. WireGuard is generally the first protocol to try for a modern phone, computer or router because it is designed for efficient connections. Proton’s official Austria information specifically lists WireGuard. The supplied comparisons do not provide a provider-by-provider protocol matrix for NordVPN, Surfshark or Mullvad, so confirm the choices shown in the app you install.
Audits and open-source software
Proton’s official documentation states that its applications are open source and have undergone third-party audits. TechRadar’s 2026 coverage noted an independent infrastructure audit for Surfshark in January 2026. These are evidence points about published reviews and audits, not a guarantee that every future app release or server behaves identically.
What a VPN does not protect
- It does not make phishing links, malware, fraud or copyright infringement lawful.
- It does not stop a service you are logged into from identifying your account, browser or device.
- It does not guarantee anonymity: your VPN provider can still see connection metadata according to its policies, and websites can use cookies or account information.
- It does not guarantee the measured peak speeds reported by TechRadar or any other publisher.
Are VPNs legal in Austria?
Selectra’s Austria comparison says VPNs are legal in Austria. No primary Austrian government legal source was identified for this comparison, so treat that statement as a general description rather than legal advice. The VPN itself does not change the legality of what you do with it: copyright rules, streaming licences, fraud laws and a service’s terms still apply. If your use involves business compliance, regulated data or a dispute, obtain advice specific to your situation in Austria.
How to choose an Austrian VPN
- Confirm an Austrian server: you need an Austria location, not merely a nearby server in Germany, Switzerland or another country.
- Prioritize tested streaming access: NordVPN and Proton VPN have the supplied Austrian evidence for ORF, ServusTV and ATV.
- Interpret speed figures correctly: 1,256 Mbps for NordVPN and 1,615 Mbps for Surfshark are publisher-specific peaks. Your result depends on your line, Wi-Fi, device, distance and server load.
- Check the full price: NordVPN’s $3.09-per-month figure was promotional in TechRadar’s 2026 review. Verify the term, tax, renewal amount and cancellation rules for every provider.
- Match the app to your devices: the supplied comparisons do not state exact simultaneous-device limits, so check the provider’s current plan page before buying.
- Look for transparent security evidence: Proton’s open-source apps, WireGuard support and third-party audits, plus Surfshark’s reported January 2026 infrastructure audit, are concrete evidence points to compare.
Bottom line
Buy NordVPN if you want the most balanced Austria package for streaming and everyday use. Pick Proton VPN if privacy evidence and the fastest Austrian test result are more important. Surfshark is the value-oriented, broad-network alternative, while Mullvad is best reserved for privacy specialists who can accept less streaming breadth and a smaller network.
