CyberInsider’s February 26, 2026 review named NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN and ExpressVPN as its four VPN picks for Australia. That is the publisher’s shortlist—not a universal certification that only four VPNs work or meet a shared industry standard. Choose among them by checking the Australian server locations you need, privacy and security features, device support, streaming access, and the full subscription and refund terms.
Which VPNs did CyberInsider recommend for Australia?
CyberInsider’s Alex Lekander presented four services as its tested recommendations in an article updated February 26, 2026. The publisher characterized them this way:

| VPN | CyberInsider’s description | Reported speed result |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Best all-around | Peak of 903 Mbps in CyberInsider’s 2026 testing; not a guaranteed or typical customer speed. |
| Surfshark | Lower-cost option | 752 Mbps in CyberInsider’s 2026 testing; not a guaranteed or typical customer speed. |
| Proton VPN | Privacy-focused option | Not stated in the cited comparison details. |
| ExpressVPN | User-friendly option | Not stated in the cited comparison details. |
CyberInsider says it tested performance and leak protection. The retrieved account does not provide a full reproducible protocol, sample size, raw results or independent laboratory attribution. Treat those figures as the publisher’s test results, not as an apples-to-apples forecast of what you will get on your connection. Actual speed depends on your internet service, device, protocol, server and distance.
How should you choose between the four?
Start with what you want the VPN to do, then verify the current plan details directly with the provider. Server locations, features, prices, promotions and streaming availability can change.

If you want an all-around option
NordVPN is the natural first comparison based on CyberInsider’s “best all-around” label. Check that its current Australian locations suit you, the apps support your devices, and the plan’s renewal price and refund conditions fit your budget.
If price is your main concern
CyberInsider positioned Surfshark as its lower-cost pick. Compare the total cost over the subscription term and the renewal price, not just a discounted introductory rate. Confirm the current simultaneous-connection limit, router options and refund conditions before paying.

If privacy is the priority
CyberInsider described Proton VPN as privacy-focused. Before subscribing, read the provider’s current privacy policy and look for independent audit information that covers the specific apps or systems you will use. A privacy-oriented label alone does not establish that a provider keeps no data or that every part of its service has been audited.

If you value ease of use
ExpressVPN was CyberInsider’s user-friendly pick. Check app availability for each device in your household and whether the provider’s current router app or configuration supports your setup. A router VPN can cover devices that lack a native VPN app, but setup and performance depend on the router and service.

What should you check before buying a VPN in Australia?
- Australian server locations: Confirm the provider lists locations in Australia and that the city or region you need is available. A server in Australia is useful for an Australian IP address, but it does not guarantee access to a particular website or streaming catalogue.
- Privacy and security: Review the current privacy policy, independent audit details, encryption and protocol options, kill switch behavior, and leak-protection features. Check which devices and apps each claim covers.
- Device support: Make sure there are apps for your computer, phone, tablet or TV device. If you need whole-home coverage, verify router compatibility and whether it requires a manual configuration or a provider app.
- Streaming compatibility: Look for current, service-specific evidence for the platform and country you care about. Access can change as streaming services update their restrictions, so no VPN should be treated as a guarantee of continued access.
- Real subscription cost: Compare the amount charged now with the renewal price, billing period, taxes if applicable, and cancellation rules. Promotional prices and plan terms can change.
- Refund and connection terms: Read the current refund conditions and simultaneous-connection limit. Check whether a refund requires a request within a stated period or has other conditions.
Can you use a VPN to watch Australian TV overseas?
A VPN may let a device connect through an Australian server and receive an Australian IP address, which can be relevant to location-based streaming checks. It does not guarantee that an Australian broadcaster or streaming service will accept the connection, that a particular programme is available, or that the service’s terms permit the use. Check both the platform’s rules and current VPN compatibility for the service you intend to watch.
Are VPNs legal in Australia?
The legislation cited here does not establish a general ban on using a VPN in Australia. A VPN also does not exempt someone from laws or service terms that apply to what they do online.

Social-media minimum-age rules are not a VPN workaround
The Online Safety Act framework applies to covered age-restricted social-media platforms and Australian children under 16. It requires providers of covered platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent those users from holding accounts and sets limits on information collection and handling for compliance. The Act does not establish that every service is covered, that an Australian IP automatically triggers identity checks, or that a VPN lawfully bypasses the rules.

The Federal Register records the Online Safety Amendment (Strengthening Enforcement for the Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2026 as in force from September 11, 2026. That postdates CyberInsider’s February 2026 article, so its law-related discussion should not be treated as a current account of the enforcement framework.

Does a VPN stop your ISP from seeing your browsing?
A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, which generally prevents your internet provider from reading the contents of that protected connection in transit. The provider can still observe that you connect to a VPN, and a VPN does not make you invisible to websites, apps or accounts you use. It moves some trust from your internet provider to the VPN service; it is not a promise of anonymity.
Australia’s Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act requires retention of specified telecommunications data. The cited provision sets a two-year period after creation for some categories and, for certain other categories, a period running two years after account closure. It does not say that providers must retain a complete list of every website a customer visits. That statutory retention requirement should not be paraphrased as proof that an ISP logs every page viewed—or as proof that a VPN makes all activity invisible.
