Best VPNs for AR Glasses in 2026: Why the Answer Depends on How Your Glasses Connect

There is no single best VPN for AR glasses. A VPN only protects the traffic that passes through the device or gateway running the tunnel. Before choosing a provider, identify your exact glasses model and find out whether it connects to the internet on its own, through a paired phone, or through a headset that can run a VPN app. The provider documentation available for 2026 covers a handful of headsets with direct VPN apps, a phone path that does not automatically extend to glasses, and a router path that works for any device on the network. Those are the options worth comparing.

Step 1: Find out how your glasses reach the internet

Every decision below depends on this one question, so answer it before you look at any provider.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Check the manufacturer’s connectivity documentation for your exact model. Look for whether the glasses join Wi-Fi directly, use a companion phone app for internet access, or run an app store of their own.
  2. Test whether the glasses have their own internet connection. If the glasses can load a web page or stream content while the phone is switched off or out of range, they are not depending on the phone for internet access.
  3. Look for an app store on the device. Only a device that can install apps can run a full-device VPN app. Lightweight camera and display glasses generally cannot, based on what the reviewed provider documentation covers.

If the glasses depend on the phone, a VPN on the phone protects the phone’s traffic. It does not, by itself, prove that the glasses’ traffic also goes through that tunnel. Confirm this with the manufacturer or by checking the glasses’ network behaviour yourself before assuming protection.

What a phone VPN does and does not cover

Surfshark describes its mobile app as available for Android and iOS and says it encrypts phone data on Wi-Fi and mobile data. That is a clear statement about the phone. It is not a statement about a separate pair of glasses. NordVPN’s listed mobile compatibility includes Android 9 and later and iOS 17 and later, with legacy qualifications on its support page, so check your phone’s OS version against the provider’s current list before installing.

#1 Best Overall
XREAL xbx a01+ AR Glasses, 147'' Big-Screen Display for Movies & Gaming
  • YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
  • ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
  • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
  • LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

Use a phone VPN for what it covers: the phone’s own browsing, apps and network sessions. Do not treat it as glasses protection unless the manufacturer’s documentation says the glasses route through the phone’s connection.

Headsets with documented direct VPN apps

A few spatial-computing headsets can run VPN apps directly. These are not lightweight AR glasses, and the providers’ support pages do not show that the same setup works on glasses. Use the table below to see what each provider documents.

Meta Quest NordVPN Install the app on the headset Protects headset traffic without a router or shared connection, because the VPN runs on the headset

Apple Vision Pro

Surfshark’s guide has you install the app directly on the headset from the App Store. This is the clearest documented case of a VPN app running on a device worn on the face. It shows that a headset can host a VPN, not that every pair of glasses can.

Meta Quest

ExpressVPN’s Meta Quest app supports Quest 3S, Quest 3, Quest Pro and Quest 2. Its guide says the Automatic setting is selected by default and recommended for the best experience. NordVPN’s guide describes the same basic approach: install the app on the headset, and the headset’s traffic runs through the tunnel. Both providers document their own Quest apps, so check each one’s current list of supported headsets before buying.

Casting and local network problems

A VPN can break casting from a headset to a phone, TV or other target device. NordVPN’s Quest guide advises putting the headset and the casting target on the same Wi-Fi network. If they cannot see each other while the VPN is on, it advises enabling local network discovery in the VPN app’s settings.

If casting fails after you turn on a VPN, work through these checks in order:

  • Disconnect the VPN and cast again. If casting works only when the VPN is off, the problem is local discovery rather than the headset.
  • Try a different server location if the connection itself is unstable, then check the provider’s current troubleshooting page.

Router-level VPN as a fallback

A VPN-compatible router can protect every device on the network, including devices that cannot run a VPN app. ExpressVPN lists supported router families including Fortify, ExpressVPN Aircove, Asus, Linksys and Netgear, and says that manual configuration is available for other router families. Connecting the router to the VPN protects devices on that network under one connection.

This route has real trade-offs. It protects only devices that use that router, so it does not cover mobile data or a glasses connection that goes through a phone on another network. It also depends on the router’s model and firmware, so confirm the exact model against the provider’s instructions before you buy or configure one.

How to compare providers

Compare options on these six points, in this order:

  • Exact device and OS support. Check the headset or phone model and its operating system version against the provider’s current list.
  • Coverage scope. Full-device protection differs from a browser extension, which covers only browser traffic.
  • Traffic path. Establish whether protection runs on the phone, the headset or the router.
  • Local network and casting. Confirm that local discovery works with your target devices.
  • Setup effort. Note how many steps are involved and whether you must switch networks or servers often.
  • Price, renewal and privacy documentation. Verify current subscription price, renewal terms and the privacy policy directly on each provider’s site.

Speed rankings are not established for AR glasses. The provider comparisons available to readers are written by the providers themselves, so treat their claims about rival services as the views of an interested party.

Known limits of current evidence

The provider documentation does not explain how specific lightweight glasses models route traffic between glasses and phone, whether their companion apps permit a VPN, or whether they connect independently to Wi-Fi. Those answers come from the manufacturer’s current documentation for each model. Until you have them, avoid recommending a VPN for a specific pair of glasses as though it were established. No independent speed or privacy test results are cited here, and no provider is shown to be the best choice for all AR glasses.
