What “a New Jersey VPN” actually means

Proton VPN: useful free tier, unconfirmed NJ endpoint
What the free plan does and does not establish

1. Verify the exact endpoint

3. Check renewal and refund rules
Look for the renewal date, post-introductory price, billing frequency and cancellation deadline in the checkout screen. A money-back guarantee is useful only if your purchase, payment method and cancellation request meet the provider’s conditions. Save the confirmation email and set a calendar reminder before renewal.
4. Match the plan to your devices
Confirm that the plan supports every device you intend to use: Windows or macOS computers, Android or iOS phones, streaming hardware, smart TVs or a router. What a New Jersey VPN can—and cannot—do
It can encrypt the device-to-server connection
On an untrusted coffee-shop, hotel or airport network, a VPN can reduce the risk of someone on that local network reading unencrypted traffic between your device and the VPN server. Modern websites should still use HTTPS, and a VPN does not replace secure passwords, software updates or multi-factor authentication.
It can mask your normal public IP
Websites generally see the VPN server’s IP rather than the address supplied by your ISP. This can provide a stable-looking US or New Jersey source while traveling, though addresses may be shared by many customers and can be blocked or reclassified.
It cannot make you anonymous
Accounts, cookies, browser fingerprints, advertising IDs, payment records and device identifiers can still connect activity to you. A VPN also cannot prevent a website from collecting information you voluntarily provide or guarantee that a provider retains no data.

Changing an IP does not override copyright licenses, regional blackouts, account requirements or a service’s anti-VPN systems. ExpressVPN’s own New Jersey guidance tells users to consult the VPN terms and the content provider’s terms, and says the service is not intended as a means of copyright circumvention.
Troubleshooting an incorrect or blocked New Jersey location
The site shows another state
- Disconnect and reconnect to the same named New Jersey location.
- Try another listed New Jersey endpoint if the provider offers more than one.
- Clear the site’s cookies or test a private browser window; a prior location cookie can outlast the VPN connection.
- Check whether the site uses browser location permission, GPS or account history instead of IP data.
- Contact the VPN provider if the app label and independent IP checks consistently disagree.
The app has no New Jersey location
