Best for a genuinely no-cost first test: CyberGhost offers a 24-hour desktop trial without payment information, according to Top10VPN. It also has shorter mobile trials, but those require app-store billing details and renew automatically unless canceled. If seven days is more important than avoiding an upfront billing setup, the app-store trials from several providers give you more time. A permanent free tier, such as Proton VPN’s free plan, is a different product—not a time-limited trial of the paid service.
There is no single best offer for everyone. Compare the trial channel, payment requirement, renewal behavior, refund deadline, operating-system eligibility, and your own tolerance for remembering to cancel. What “free trial” means for a VPN
VPN offers use three different models that are often described with the same phrase:
- True no-cost trial: You can use the service for a limited time without being charged at signup. Some offers still ask you to create an account, but no card or other payment method is collected. CyberGhost’s reported 24-hour desktop offer is an example.
- Trial with payment details: You receive trial access, but a card or app-store payment method is required. Unless you cancel before the stated deadline, the subscription converts to a paid plan. Mobile app-store offers commonly work this way.
- Money-back guarantee: You pay first, use the service during the guarantee window, and request a refund under the provider’s rules. This is not a free trial because money leaves your account before you can test the VPN.
- Permanent free plan: A continuing free tier has no trial countdown, but it may differ from the paid service in servers, locations, features, speed or device limits. Proton VPN’s official free plan is in this category, not a trial of its paid plans (Proton VPN’s free-plan page).
The distinction matters if you cannot risk an unexpected renewal. A seven-day offer that requires billing details may be less suitable than a 24-hour offer that asks for none. Conversely, a longer guarantee can provide more practical testing time if you are comfortable paying first and following the refund procedure.

Which VPN trial fits your situation?
You want to test without entering a card
Start with CyberGhost’s reported 24-hour desktop trial. It is the clearest match for “VPN free trial no credit card,” although one day is enough only for basic checks such as installation, connection, location selection and a few websites. If you need an ongoing free option rather than a deadline, Proton VPN’s free plan avoids trial conversion but should be judged as a free tier, not as a preview of every paid feature.
You need a full week and can manage a reminder
The seven-day offers from NordVPN, PIA and Norton VPN provide more time, but payment and platform rules differ. PIA’s reported seven-day offer is specifically through the Android and iOS app stores. Norton VPN’s reported seven-day trial requires payment details. NordVPN’s seven-day availability is described differently by the two reviewed publications, so verify whether your signup is through Google Play or a provider website before assuming you qualify.

You want the longest refund safety net
Norton VPN has the longest reported money-back period at 60 days, but it is still a pay-first arrangement. You are testing on a particular device
Do not choose by brand name alone. CyberGhost’s durations change between desktop, Android and iOS. PIA’s cited trial is mobile-only. The NordVPN descriptions conflict on whether a provider-site offer or an Android-only offer applies. Confirm the operating system, app store and subscription term shown on your own checkout screen.
Service-by-service details
CyberGhost: the clearest no-payment desktop test
Top10VPN reports three separate CyberGhost trial paths: 24 hours on desktop without payment information, three days on Android, and seven days on iOS. The mobile paths require payment details through the app stores and automatically convert unless you cancel. That makes the desktop path the lowest-risk choice for someone who wants to avoid entering billing information, while the iOS path gives the longest reported trial period.
The same source reports a 45-day refund period for purchases made through the website, with a one-month plan restricted to 14 days. Do not treat the 45-day figure as applying to every plan or app-store purchase. The purchase channel and plan length determine which rule you receive, so save the receipt and the terms shown at checkout.
NordVPN: verify the signup channel before relying on the seven-day term
The reviewed sources do not describe NordVPN’s trial identically. Top10VPN lists a seven-day trial obtained through the provider site with 12- or 24-month plans. TechRadar describes a seven-day Android trial through Google Play and says other devices do not have a trial. The difference may reflect platform, geography or an offer change. Treat neither description as universal: look for the trial language on your own account creation and payment screens.

Both sources report a 30-day money-back period. That guarantee is separate from the seven-day trial, and a purchase made through an app store may have different cancellation or refund procedures than a website purchase. Record where you subscribed so you know which account or store must process a cancellation.
Private Internet Access: seven days through mobile stores
TechRadar reports seven-day trials for Android and iOS through the respective app stores, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee. Because the trial is tied to an app-store subscription, cancellation normally has to be completed in the store account that controls the billing. Removing the app does not itself cancel a subscription; use the store’s subscription-management page and keep the confirmation.
Norton VPN: seven-day trial with a 60-day guarantee
TechRadar reports a seven-day trial that requires payment details and a 60-day money-back guarantee. The trial’s billing requirement means it is not a no-card option. Before starting, identify the exact renewal date and the method used to cancel. If you decide the service is not suitable, cancel the trial before conversion; if you paid and rely on the guarantee instead, follow the provider’s refund process within the 60-day window and retain the request confirmation.

Proton VPN’s official page describes a free VPN plan. There is no seven-day countdown to manage, so it can be useful for readers who want to test VPN basics without a subscription deadline. It should not be presented as a full trial of the paid service: free-tier servers, locations, performance, device allowances or features may differ from paid plans. Compare the feature list on the official page with what you actually need before deciding whether an upgrade is necessary.

How to start a trial without an unwanted charge
- Identify the exact offer. Write down the duration, platform, subscription length and whether the screen says “trial,” “free plan” or “money-back guarantee.” A seven-day app-store trial and a 30-day refund are different commitments.
- Check your country and device. Trial eligibility can change by region, operating system and store. On a desktop, confirm that the desktop offer appears before entering payment details; on a phone, open the relevant app-store subscription screen and read the conversion date.
- Read the renewal line. Look for the amount, billing interval and date after the trial. Offers tied to 12- or 24-month subscriptions can renew on that plan, not as a short monthly test.

Sign in to the provider account used at checkout and open billing, subscriptions or account settings. Confirm that recurring billing is disabled and save the confirmation. If you are seeking a refund, use the provider’s documented support or refund route rather than assuming cancellation automatically returns the latest payment.
Google Play or Apple App Store subscription
Open the store account that supplied the payment method, locate subscriptions, and cancel there. The VPN app’s own delete or log-out option does not necessarily stop store billing. App-store refund rules can also differ from website guarantees, so check the store receipt and the provider’s terms before relying on a published refund period.

How to test a VPN during the trial
Use a short, repeatable checklist rather than spending the entire trial on a single website:
- Connection setup: Install the official app, sign in, connect and disconnect several times, and note whether the app clearly shows the connection state.
- Location selection: Try the locations you expect to use. Confirm that the app identifies the selected country or city and that changing locations does not leave a stale connection.
- Everyday browsing: Open your normal news, banking and work sites. If a site presents a CAPTCHA or blocks access, disconnect and reconnect to another location before deciding whether the service fits.

“The trial is not showing”
Check the country, operating system and signup channel.
