For context, The Independent published its findings on January 8, 2026, after testing VPNs on a Windows 11 laptop with security patches and no other active security software. Top10VPN’s ranking was updated July 28, 2026. Different test methods, priorities, and dates help explain why their top choices differ.
What a VPN does—and what it does not
A VPN service sends your internet traffic through a server operated by the provider. Websites then see the server’s apparent IP address instead of your home connection’s IP, and traffic is protected within the VPN tunnel. That can help conceal your IP from sites and protect traffic on the connection, but it does not make you anonymous or prevent every form of tracking. Websites can still identify accounts you sign into, and other tracking methods may remain available. A VPN provider also becomes part of the path your traffic takes. Its privacy policy, technical design, and the scope of any independent audit matter. A test or audit addresses defined scenarios; neither alone proves every privacy claim or covers every possible threat.
How to compare Windows VPNs
Check the Windows app and compatibility
Look for an app that supports your Windows version and makes everyday tasks straightforward. Assess whether its controls are easy to find and whether it offers the features you need, rather than treating a polished interface as evidence of stronger privacy.

Read the privacy policy and audit scope
Check what information the provider says it collects, how long it retains it, and what an audit actually examined. RTINGS notes that the most recent Proton VPN no-logging audit it reviewed excluded broader privacy policies and did not cover the VPN’s full source code. An audit is evidence about its stated scope—not blanket proof of every privacy claim.

Look for a kill switch and leak protections
A kill switch is designed to block internet traffic if the VPN connection drops. Leak testing can check whether IP, DNS, IPv6, or WebRTC information escapes the tunnel in specific situations. Confirm what the Windows app provides and how it behaves when you change servers or lose a connection.

Compare protocols and split tunneling
Protocol choices affect how a VPN establishes its tunnel. Split tunneling lets you route selected apps or traffic outside the tunnel while other traffic uses it. These controls can be useful, but they also change which traffic receives VPN protection; choose settings deliberately.
Match performance claims to your own use
Speed and streaming access can vary by server, route, time, and service. A publisher’s test result describes its test conditions, not every user’s experience. No VPN recommendation can guarantee that a streaming platform will work through a particular server.

Check the full price and free-plan limits
Paid-plan prices and terms can change. Compare the current renewal price, billing period, and included features on the provider’s own plan page before paying. For a free plan, check server selection, data limits, and restrictions on activities you care about.

It is a notable starting point if you want a free Windows VPN: Top10VPN and The Independent both include it as a free choice, and RTINGS describes unlimited data and a working kill switch. But the free service has a restricted server set and does not let users choose a desired country, according to RTINGS. RTINGS also says torrenting is reserved for paid service. If your use depends on a specific location or activity, verify the provider’s current terms rather than assuming the free tier will fit.

What does Windows’ built-in VPN do?
Windows includes VPN connection capabilities, but Tom’s Guide describes the built-in feature as oriented toward business or educational remote access. It is not the same thing as subscribing to a consumer VPN provider: Windows can connect to a VPN network, while a provider supplies the service and network. A built-in client does not by itself provide a consumer VPN subscription or a network of provider-operated servers.
How to assess VPN test and privacy claims
Security.org describes evaluating privacy policies and third-party audits, testing leak types and kill switches, measuring speed, checking streaming access, and examining Windows-specific features such as split tunneling, protocols, and compatibility. That is a useful checklist for comparing services, but it remains Security.org’s account of its own methodology.
NordVPN reported on August 10, 2026, that Artifact Security’s 2026 comparison gave NordVPN the only Platinum rating and an overall score of 91. NordVPN says five providers were compared and that Windows tests included IP, DNS, IPv6, WebRTC, server-switch, split-tunnel, and connection-drop scenarios. Treat the score and test description as NordVPN’s account of Artifact Security’s results, not as a universal rating or a direct substitute for the original test report.
