There is no substantiated “best VPN for PlayStation VR” ranking here. PlayStation VR2 connects to a PS5 by USB-C; it does not take a VPN connection itself. If you want to route console internet traffic through a VPN, the practical options described by VPN and PlayStation support guidance are configuring a compatible router or sharing a VPN-enabled computer connection. Neither option is shown to improve VR performance.
First, identify which PlayStation VR system you have
PlayStation VR can refer to two generations with different console and game compatibility. Sony says PS VR2 is compatible with PS5 consoles; PS VR and PS VR2 games are not interchangeable. The connection details below concern PS VR2 on PS5 unless stated otherwise. For the earlier PS VR system, check its separate support documentation rather than assuming PS VR2 instructions apply.

How a VPN fits into a PS VR2 setup
Sony’s PS VR2 console setup connects the headset to the PS5’s front USB-C port with the supplied cable. The VPN, if used, applies to the console’s internet connection through network equipment or a shared computer connection; it is not installed on or connected directly to the headset.

Sony also documents a separate PS VR2 PC setup involving a PC adapter, DisplayPort cable, USB connection, and PC apps. That is not the PS5 console VPN setup described here.

Ways to route PS5 internet traffic through a VPN
| Option | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VPN-compatible router | Configure the router to connect through a VPN, so devices using that network—including a PS5—can use the routed connection. NordVPN describes this approach in its PlayStation VPN setup guidance. | Confirm that the exact router model, its firmware, and the VPN provider’s configuration instructions support the setup. No router model was verified here; a compatible router is network equipment, not a PS VR accessory. |
| VPN-enabled computer sharing a connection | Use a computer connected to a VPN to share a protected hotspot or network connection with the console. NordVPN describes a Windows hotspot method when a supported router is unavailable in its gaming-console support guidance. | Follow the current instructions for your computer and VPN service, then connect the PS5 to the shared network. The cited steps are NordVPN’s own guidance, not an independently tested method for every computer, provider, or console configuration. |
NordVPN says gaming consoles do not support built-in VPN functionality. The sources here do not establish a universal app or firmware route for every provider and console version, so verify the current support instructions for the specific equipment you own.
Keep the PS5 network setup compatible
Sony’s PlayStation internet setup guide covers both Wi-Fi and wired LAN connections. PS5 supports IPv6, but not IPv6-only network connections; a network must also support IPv4. Sony lists IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, proxy, and Multi-Link Operation among the advanced network settings. If you are unfamiliar with these options, Sony advises contacting your ISP or network administrator instead of changing them blindly.

What a VPN does—and does not—establish for VR
Routing a console connection through a VPN changes the network path for that traffic. The cited support pages explain setup, but do not provide PS VR performance measurements or prove that a VPN improves latency, image quality, tracking, or access to particular games. A VPN should therefore be treated as a network-routing choice, not a VR upgrade or a guaranteed gaming-performance fix.
Remote Play is not a substitute for a VR connection
A VPN does not make VR-required games playable through Remote Play. Sony’s Remote Play troubleshooting guidance excludes games requiring PS VR2, PS VR, or PlayStation Camera from Remote Play compatibility.
How to choose a VPN for this setup
The available setup guidance does not support ranking VPN providers as “best” for PlayStation VR. If you are comparing services, verify these points directly with the provider before subscribing:
- Whether it publishes setup instructions for your router model or computer-sharing method.
- Which protocols and router firmware configurations it supports for your equipment.
- Whether the service is available in your region and what its current terms and pricing are.
Those checks can help establish whether a service fits your intended setup; they are not evidence that it will improve PS VR gameplay.
