It does not replace your bank’s HTTPS connection, verify that a website is really your bank, stop phishing, remove malware, or secure a compromised device. For most people, a trusted network, an updated personal device, the bank’s official app or known web address, and strong authentication matter more than finding a VPN marketed specifically for banking.

Is it safe to use a VPN for online banking?
A VPN can be useful on a public network, but it is not a guarantee of safe banking. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) advises caution with public Wi-Fi, recommends avoiding sensitive transactions on public networks when possible, and says consumers may consider a VPN. Its 2025 consumer article, Protect Your Finances and Identity Online, puts a VPN among broader precautions rather than presenting it as a substitute for them.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says most websites now use encryption and public Wi-Fi is usually safe when users take precautions. A VPN creates a separate encrypted route between your device and the VPN provider, but your bank’s HTTPS connection remains important. - Use your own updated device and, when available, a trusted network.
- Open the bank’s official app or type a web address you already know; do not use an unexpected login link.
- Check that the bank’s address is correct and the connection uses HTTPS. HTTPS alone does not prove the site is genuine.
- Use strong authentication and be wary of unsolicited requests for passwords, codes, or other personal information.
The FDIC’s customer cybersecurity guidance likewise advises using your own device and a known, trusted, secure connection for banking, and cautions that public computers and free Wi-Fi may not be secure.
Can I use online banking on public Wi-Fi with a VPN?
You can, but a VPN should be one precaution among several—not a reason to ignore warnings, use a shared public computer, or trust an unfamiliar login page. The FDIC’s advice is to avoid sensitive transactions on public networks where possible; if you must connect, use your own device, verify the bank’s address, and keep the VPN and your device’s security software current.

A VPN also changes whom you trust. It can reduce what the local Wi-Fi operator or internet service provider can see about your traffic, but the VPN provider becomes another party handling that connection. NordVPN explains that an ISP can see that a customer connects to a VPN server; that is the provider’s explanation of the relationship, not independent validation of any service’s privacy practices. Review the provider’s data-handling policy and the scope of any independent audit.
Which VPN works with my bank?
No bank-by-bank compatibility evidence establishes which VPN endpoints will work with every institution. A bank may challenge a login when it sees a VPN exit address or a location that differs from your usual pattern. If a login is challenged, use the bank’s official support channel; if needed, temporarily disconnect the VPN and retry on a trusted network. Do not disable other security controls or follow a link in an unsolicited message to resolve an account warning.

VPN providers to compare—not a tested ranking
These examples have relevant public security or privacy documentation, but that documentation does not establish which provider is best for banking or guarantee that a bank will accept its connections.

Provider statements about encryption, no-logs policies, and audits are useful inputs, not a substitute for examining what was audited, by whom, and when. How to choose a VPN for banking
- Read the privacy policy. Check what connection or account data the provider says it collects, how long it retains it, and whether the policy applies to the apps and services you intend to use.
- Check audit scope and date. Look for the auditor, the systems or policy examined, and the report date. An audit count alone does not explain what was reviewed.
- Review security options. Confirm the provider’s current protocols and protective features in its documentation, and make sure the apps support your devices.
- Consider bank access. If your bank challenges a login, contact it through its official channel or temporarily disconnect the VPN as appropriate. No provider can guarantee that every bank will accept every VPN exit address.
- Compare practical terms. Check connection stability, support, renewal pricing, refund conditions, and the offer available for your country and plan before paying.
Do you need a VPN router for online banking?
No. A VPN router is optional hardware that can apply a VPN connection at the network level; it is not necessary for routine banking on one device. ExpressVPN describes its Aircove router as running a VPN at network level. Consider this kind of setup only if you specifically want network-level VPN coverage and understand how it affects the devices connected to your home network.
