No VPN can be guaranteed to unlock every Netflix library, and Netflix does not publish a count of VPNs that currently work. The “only five still work” figure in the headline comes from individual 2026 reviews, each covering its own regions, devices and test dates. Netflix can detect VPN and proxy connections and may block them, so whether a given service works depends on where you are, what you are watching it on, and when it was tested.
What the “only five still work” claim does and does not mean
The phrase is a test result, not a standing fact. Reviewers run their own checks on a set of providers, in a set of Netflix libraries, on a set of devices, and then publish a ranking. A different reviewer, testing a different region a few weeks later, can reach a different list. That is what the 2026 coverage shows: the sources do not agree on every provider or every library.

Read any “still works” claim with four questions in mind:
- Which Netflix libraries were tested? A VPN that reaches the US library may not reach the UK, Japan or Canadian libraries.
- Which devices were tested? A result on a laptop browser does not carry over automatically to a smart TV or streaming stick.
- When was it tested? Netflix changes how it detects VPN traffic, so a result from one month may not hold the next.
- Was the test independent of the publisher’s own affiliate relationships? Reviews are only as useful as their disclosure, so check each publication’s own methodology notes.
What Netflix officially says about VPNs
Netflix’s Help Center material is more stable than any provider ranking, and it sets the baseline for every troubleshooting decision. Its wording on VPN use is:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Five Gigabit Ports】1 Gigabit WAN Port plus 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus 2 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to 3 WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【One USB WAN Port】Mobile broadband via 4G/3G modem is supported for WAN backup by connecting to the USB port. For complete list of compatible 4G/3G modems, please visit TP-Link website.
- 【Abundant Security Features】Advanced firewall policies, DoS defense, IP/MAC/URL filtering, speed test and more security functions protect your network and data.
- 【Highly Secure VPN】Supports up to 20× LAN-to-LAN IPsec, 16× OpenVPN, 16× L2TP, and 16× PPTP VPN connections.
- Security - SPI Firewall, VPN Pass through, FTP/H.323/PPTP/SIP/IPsec ALG, DoS Defence, Ping of Death and Local Management. Standards and Protocols IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3x, IEEE 802.1q
- “VPN apps or services can make your device or network look like it’s connecting from somewhere other than your physical location and can cause this error or other issues.” (Netflix Help Center)
- “VPNs aren’t supported for watching Live events on Netflix or if you’re on an ad-supported experience.” (Netflix Help Center)
Two points follow from that wording. First, a VPN is not a guaranteed route to any library, because Netflix’s own guidance treats the connection as a possible cause of an error. Second, live events and ad-supported plans are outside what Netflix supports, whichever VPN you use.
What independent 2026 tests reported
The table below lists each source’s own findings. The figures are not combined into a single ranking, because each publication tested different providers, libraries and devices. Where a source did not publish a value, the cell says “not stated.”
Rank #2

| Source and date | Scope of test | Netflix libraries reported | Speed or quality | Devices | Caveats |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top10VPN guide, updated August 26, 2026 | 59 VPNs tested, across providers and libraries | Provider-level differences reported; library-by-library results not stated in the summary reviewed | Not stated | Not stated | Reports its own tests; results may differ from later runs |
| TechRadar comparison, 2026 (exact date not stated) | Five VPNs in its comparison table | USA, UK, Australia/New Zealand, Canada and Japan columns | Not stated | Not stated | Results for some of the same services disagree with other 2026 reviews |
| Gizmodo article, October 6, 2026 | More than 40 VPNs tested; top three tested in depth | US, Canadian and Japanese libraries; top three tested across 15 libraries. NordVPN reached all 15; ExpressVPN reached 13 | Not stated | Not stated | Reflects Gizmodo’s own October test; not independently reproduced. Names a five-provider shortlist |
Why the results disagree
Netflix’s catalogue differs by country, and each library has its own set of titles and its own detection behaviour. A VPN server that works in one region can fail in another on the same day. Providers also change their server pools and detection workarounds, so a list published in August may be out of date by October. The disagreement between TechRadar and other 2026 reviews is the clearest sign of this: a snapshot tells you what happened in one test, not what will happen on your connection next week.

If Netflix shows “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”
This message means Netflix has detected what looks like a VPN or proxy connection. Work through the steps below in order, because the first one often resolves the problem.
Rank #3
- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
- Check whether a VPN is active on the device. Include VPNs bundled with antivirus or security software, which are easy to forget.
- Turn the VPN off, then sign in to Netflix again on the affected device.
- On a device connected to the same network, open fast.com, select “Show more info,” and compare the Client country shown with your actual location.
- Check your plan. If you are on an ad-supported experience, Netflix states that VPNs are not supported there, so turning off the VPN is the only fix that applies.
- If the VPN is off and the Client country matches your location but the error remains, reset the device’s network settings, then restart the device.
- If the problem continues, contact your internet service provider. Give them the Client country and the IP address shown on fast.com.
The E121 “There’s a problem” message
Netflix’s E121 help page links this message to an ad-supported experience that appears to be connected through a VPN or proxy. In this case the fix is to remove the VPN connection, not to switch to a different VPN server or provider. Netflix does not present changing VPN servers as its first-line answer for this plan.
Devices and Smart DNS
A VPN app on a smart TV or streaming stick is the most direct route into the living room, but support varies. Amazon’s Fire TV is a device where some VPN apps can be installed. Confirm that your chosen provider has a Fire TV app and that it works with the Netflix library you need before you buy.

Some providers also offer Smart DNS, a setup for certain televisions and consoles that changes how the device resolves Netflix’s address. Smart DNS is not a VPN and does not encrypt your traffic or provide the privacy a VPN offers. Treat it as a separate option with its own limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to choose a VPN for Netflix in 2026
Use this checklist before you pay for a plan:
- Confirm the provider’s results for the Netflix library in your country, not the headline library.
- Check the device list: your TV, streaming stick or laptop should appear by name.
- Compare the renewal price with the introductory price, since the two can differ substantially.
- Confirm the refund window and whether a trial is offered, then test Netflix on your own account during that window.
- Re-check the provider’s results against a current test before relying on them, since the rankings in this article reflect the dates shown above.
The Bottom Line
Treat “best VPN for Netflix” as a dated, region-specific test result rather than a guarantee. Netflix’s own guidance is that VPNs can trigger errors, are unsupported for live events and ad-supported plans, and can be detected and blocked. If a provider works in your library and on your device today, that is the answer that matters, and it may change.
