For a company connecting remote employees through a corporate VPN, Microsoft’s documented answer is a managed split-tunnel design that sends selected Microsoft 365 traffic directly to Microsoft while other traffic remains on the corporate tunnel.
The right choice depends on whether you are protecting a personal device or designing Microsoft 365 remote access for an organization. Those are different networking problems, with different controls, risks and success criteria.

Choose the right answer for your situation
| Situation | What a VPN can do | What to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Office or Microsoft 365 user | Encrypt traffic on an untrusted network and provide a different apparent IP address. | Support for your exact operating system, reliable app or address exclusions, privacy policy and whether your work or school policy permits a personal VPN. |
| Employee on a corporate VPN | Carry company traffic through a managed security boundary. | A Microsoft 365 split-tunnel design, current endpoint data, security review, monitoring and change management. |
| Administrator troubleshooting access | Potentially separate Microsoft 365 routes from congested corporate paths. | Documented Microsoft Optimize endpoint ranges rather than a consumer subscription or a blanket bypass. |
Do not treat a consumer subscription as a substitute for an enterprise remote-access architecture. Conversely, do not buy an enterprise VPN merely because a home user wants safer airport Wi‑Fi.
What Microsoft actually recommends for enterprise Microsoft 365 traffic
Microsoft’s guidance is aimed at organizations whose remote-worker devices connect to a corporate network or cloud infrastructure over VPN. It states: “For customers who connect their remote worker devices to the corporate network or cloud infrastructure over VPN, we recommend that the key Microsoft 365 scenarios Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Exchange Online are routed over a VPN split tunnel configuration.” Read the full overview in Microsoft’s VPN split-tunneling guidance.

In a split-tunnel design, traffic matching an approved destination leaves through the user’s normal internet connection and avoids the corporate VPN path. Other destinations continue through the company tunnel according to policy. The goal is to reduce unnecessary backhauling, relieve VPN congestion and improve the experience of latency-sensitive Microsoft 365 workloads.
Why the Optimize category matters
Microsoft’s implementation documentation groups Microsoft 365 network destinations into service categories. The Optimize group contains Microsoft-owned, workload-specific endpoints that are published as IP addresses, change relatively infrequently and are sensitive to bandwidth or latency. Microsoft’s 2026 guidance estimates that these Optimize endpoints account for roughly 70–80% of Microsoft 365 service traffic in the enterprise networking context. That percentage is not a measurement of an individual employee’s total internet use.
Use the current Microsoft implementation guidance and the endpoint documentation it references. Microsoft maintains endpoint data separately from the overview, and the lists can change during a month. A static list copied into a local article or firewall rule can become stale.

Why Microsoft emphasizes IP ranges
Microsoft specifically recommends configuring the split tunnel around the documented dedicated IP ranges for Optimize endpoints. FQDN-based or AppID-based rules may miss important scenarios, and they can conflict with IP-based routing. That does not mean every Microsoft-owned address should bypass inspection. The documented approach is a scoped exception for the published Optimize destinations, while service-side Microsoft security controls continue to apply.
Enterprise implementation checklist
- Confirm the traffic model. Document which remote devices use the corporate VPN, which security controls require full tunneling and which Microsoft 365 workloads are in scope.
- Review the current endpoint categories. Start with Microsoft’s current URL and IP documentation and its change log. Do not rely on an old spreadsheet or a copied blog list.
- Build rules for the Optimize IP ranges. Implement the exclusions in the corporate VPN, secure web gateway or firewall platform that actually controls remote traffic. Keep the rules narrowly scoped.
- Preserve required inspection and access controls. Verify that identity enforcement, malware protection, data-loss prevention, DNS policy and logging still apply where your architecture requires them.
- Test representative workloads. Check Teams meetings and calls, SharePoint access, Exchange Online connectivity, sign-in, file upload and download, and any conditional-access policy that depends on source IP.
- Monitor changes and roll back safely. Subscribe to Microsoft endpoint updates, record each rule change and keep a tested full-tunnel fallback for incidents.
This is a network-engineering change, not an end-user setting. Involve the organization’s security and identity teams before production rollout.
What a personal VPN can—and cannot—solve
On a personal laptop or phone, a VPN is primarily a transport and privacy choice. It can encrypt the connection between the device and the VPN provider and make websites see the provider’s address instead of the user’s ordinary public address. That can be useful on public Wi‑Fi or when a service is sensitive to the network’s source address.

The reviewed sources do not establish an Office-specific VPN protocol, server type or provider that improves Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive or other Microsoft 365 applications for everyone. A VPN can also add latency, introduce another point of failure or trigger a sign-in challenge when a service sees a new address. Therefore, do not select a service on an unverified claim that it is the fastest VPN for Office.
Check whether the device is managed
If your employer or school manages the device, follow its policy before installing anything. Microsoft says it does not recommend using a personal VPN on workplace-managed devices. A personal tunnel can interfere with corporate routing, endpoint detection, conditional access, data-loss controls or support procedures. The relevant notice also says Microsoft Defender’s personal privacy-protection VPN ended support on February 28, 2025; see the Microsoft Support discontinuation notice.
Decide whether you need split tunneling
Split tunneling can keep selected apps inside or outside the VPN. For example, you may want a browser or a personal streaming app outside the tunnel while protecting other traffic. The correct choice depends on your threat model and the provider’s implementation. An exclusion that improves access can also mean that the excluded traffic is no longer protected by the VPN.

Consumer VPN feature comparison
The following are documented feature examples, not an Office performance ranking. Availability can vary by operating system, application version, protocol and plan.
| Provider documentation | Routing controls described | Platform details stated by the provider | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN split tunneling | Select which apps use the VPN; browser extensions can exclude websites. | Windows, Android and Android TV for the app feature. | Feature availability differs by platform; the documentation does not establish superior Microsoft Office performance. |
| ExpressVPN split tunneling | Choose which desktop apps use the VPN. | Desktop support documentation describes app-level selection. | Check the current application and plan terms for your operating system before relying on the feature. |
| Proton VPN split tunneling | Include or exclude applications and IP addresses. | Support documentation describes operating-system and protocol limitations. | “Split tunneling” is not a uniform capability; confirm the exact platform and protocol behavior. |
These pages document controls, not a guarantee that Teams, Outlook or Office desktop apps will follow the same route on every operating system. Read the provider’s instructions for the device you actually use and test after each app or VPN update.

How to compare providers without inventing an Office winner
- Start with the device. Identify whether you use Windows, macOS, Android, iOS or a browser extension. A feature listed for Windows does not automatically exist on iOS or behave the same way on a router.
- Match the routing control to the problem. App-based exclusions are useful when the application is identifiable. IP-based controls are useful when a service or network policy is destination-specific. Some providers offer one, both or neither on a given platform.
- Check policy before installation. A workplace rule or school policy outranks a personal preference.
- Read current privacy material. Review the provider’s privacy policy, ownership disclosures and independent audit reports that are available at the time you subscribe. The available documentation here is not enough to rank these providers on privacy.
- Test your own baseline. Compare sign-in, file synchronization, meetings and ordinary browsing with the VPN off and on at the same location. Record the server, protocol, network and date so a result is meaningful.
A general consumer comparison such as Tom’s Guide’s October 8, 2026 NordVPN-versus-ExpressVPN article may help explain broad VPN differences, but it does not demonstrate which service is best for Microsoft Office.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Dedicated IP: when it is relevant
A dedicated IP is an optional service feature, not a generic Office fix. It may be appropriate when a specific access policy requires a repeatedly recognized source address or when an organization has a documented reputation problem with shared VPN addresses. It is unnecessary for ordinary Office use simply because a VPN is enabled.
NordVPN’s support documentation says its dedicated IP is assigned to a specific server and account, must be purchased alongside a subscription and is available only to the purchasing account. See the provider’s dedicated-IP instructions. ExpressVPN’s dedicated-IP support page, updated September 3, 2026, lists Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux and browser-extension support subject to current plan or add-on terms.
A stable address can still be blocked, misconfigured or incompatible with a company’s conditional-access policy. Treat it as a requirement-driven option and confirm the policy owner’s approval before paying for one.

- Write down the goal. Choose privacy on public Wi‑Fi, access to a particular network, or a stable source address. If the goal is simply faster Office, a VPN is not an evidence-based guarantee.
- Install the official client for your platform. Avoid assuming that a browser extension protects desktop Office applications; an extension generally affects browser traffic only.
- Choose a nearby server first. A distant location can add delay. Change one variable at a time if you are diagnosing a problem.
- Set exclusions deliberately. If you use split tunneling, note exactly which apps or addresses bypass the tunnel and understand that excluded traffic no longer receives the VPN’s protection.
- Run a functional check. Sign in to Microsoft 365, open and save a file, verify OneDrive synchronization, send and receive mail if Outlook is in use, and join a Teams meeting if that is part of your normal work.
- Record the fallback. Know how to disable the VPN or remove an exclusion if sign-in, synchronization or a meeting fails.
Troubleshooting common Office and VPN problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Office sign-in repeatedly asks for verification | The service sees a new or shared source address, or a conditional-access rule is reacting to the VPN. | Test with the VPN off, use the organization’s approved access path and contact IT if the device is managed. A dedicated IP is not automatically the solution. |
| Teams calls become unstable | Added latency, congestion or a route that sends real-time traffic through a distant server. | Test a nearby server, compare with the VPN disabled and follow the organization’s split-tunnel policy rather than changing enterprise routes yourself. |
| OneDrive or SharePoint cannot sync | An app exclusion, address rule or security product is blocking required traffic. | Undo the most recent routing change, retest, and use current Microsoft endpoint guidance for corporate configurations. |
| Only a browser works through the VPN | A browser extension protects browser traffic but not desktop applications. | Use the provider’s full device client when policy permits, and verify the app-level feature on that operating system. |
| Corporate resources stop working after installation | A personal VPN conflicts with managed-device routing, DNS, identity or security controls. | Disconnect the personal VPN and follow employer support instructions. Microsoft does not recommend personal VPN use on workplace-managed devices. |
| Performance is worse with the VPN enabled | Encryption overhead, server distance, congestion or a suboptimal protocol. | Establish a no-VPN baseline, try a nearby server and compare one change at a time. Do not infer an Office-specific ranking from a single result. |
Security and privacy checks before subscribing
- Confirm who controls the device. Managed-device policy is the first gate.
- Read the current privacy policy. Look for collection, retention, sharing and account-identification details.
- Check independent assurance. Look for current, clearly scoped audits rather than relying on a marketing slogan.
- Understand exclusions. Split tunneling can improve compatibility while leaving excluded traffic outside the VPN.
- Protect the account itself. Use a unique password and multifactor authentication where offered.
- Keep software current. VPN clients, Office applications and endpoint security tools can change routing or authentication behavior after updates.
Bottom line for 2026
For personal Microsoft Office use, choose a VPN only for a clear privacy or network-access reason, then verify split-tunneling behavior on your exact device. The available provider documentation shows useful controls from NordVPN, ExpressVPN and Proton VPN, but it does not establish an Office-specific winner. For enterprise Microsoft 365 access, follow Microsoft’s current split-tunneling guidance: route the documented Optimize endpoints directly to Microsoft, keep the exception scoped, preserve required security controls and maintain the endpoint list as it changes. A dedicated IP is an optional policy-driven feature, not a prerequisite for Office.
