There is no substantiated basis here for saying that exactly five VPNs passed a shared set of tests. The comparison sources use their own criteria and testing setups, so a useful Mac VPN recommendation should identify what was tested and under what conditions—not repeat an unsupported “Only 5 Passed All Tests” claim.
What makes a VPN a good choice for a Mac?
A VPN comparison should assess more than whether an app opens. Macworld says its Mac evaluation considers device compatibility, supported devices, geo-restrictions, and ease of use. Those are useful starting points, but a provider’s rank on one comparison page is not proof that it will be best for every Mac user. Macworld’s Mac VPN comparison

- macOS compatibility: Check the provider’s current minimum macOS version and whether its app supports your Mac hardware. RTINGS, for example, identifies macOS 13 (Ventura) or later for one reviewed app; that is not a universal requirement for VPN apps. RTINGS’ Mac VPN comparison
- Privacy and security: Look for clear descriptions of the app’s protections and independent verification where available. Marketing claims alone do not establish that a feature or policy has been independently confirmed.
- Mac app controls: Check that the connection options and features you need are actually available in the macOS app and on your selected plan.
- Performance: Treat speeds as results from a particular device, operating system, network, server region, protocol, and test method—not as a prediction for every Mac or connection.
- Streaming: Geo-restriction access can be one comparison factor, but a test result does not guarantee that a VPN will continue to unlock a particular catalog.
- Plan terms: Compare free and paid tiers separately; an app’s feature list may not apply to every plan.
What current Mac VPN comparisons establish—and what they do not
These comparison pages describe different editorial methods and environments. Their findings can inform a shortlist, but they do not establish a shared five-provider test cohort or a common “passed all tests” result.

| Macworld | Its 2026 Mac comparison says it is based on hands-on testing and considers compatibility, supported devices, geo-restrictions, and ease of use. It describes paid Proton VPN features including a kill switch and Secure Core. | It does not identify a shared test cohort matching the title’s “Only 5” claim. |
| RTINGS.com | Its 2026 list describes research and test development. The available result says one reviewed app supports macOS 13 (Ventura) or later and that Proton VPN torrenting is limited to paid plans. | One app’s version threshold is not universal, and paid-plan features should not be attributed to a free tier. |
| TechRadar | Its Mac comparison says it tests services and retests at least twice per year. | The available information does not show that its rankings use the title’s purported five-service cohort or test criteria. |
| Tom’s Guide | Its 2026 comparison reports additional real-world testing on a November 2023 MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip running macOS Tahoe. | That is a specific test environment, not a universal speed result or proof of the title’s five-provider claim. |
How to choose a VPN for your Mac
- Confirm your Mac and macOS version. Check each provider’s current compatibility information before subscribing, especially if your Mac runs an older macOS release.
- List the features you actually need. For example, if you want a kill switch or a particular use such as torrenting, verify that the feature is available in the macOS app and on the plan you intend to use. RTINGS says Proton VPN torrenting is limited to paid plans; Macworld describes a kill switch and Secure Core among paid Proton VPN features.
- Read the basis for performance claims. Prefer comparisons that disclose the Mac model, OS, network conditions, server region, protocol, and test method. A MacBook Pro test on one setup cannot predict your results on a different network or server.
- Check streaming claims narrowly. Look for the service, catalog region, and test date behind a claim. Access can change, so treat it as a tested condition rather than a lasting guarantee.
- Compare the current plan terms. Confirm subscription features and device limits directly with the provider before purchase; comparison pages may describe paid capabilities that a free plan does not include.
Why the “Only 5 Passed All Tests” claim needs qualification
A factual claim that exactly five VPNs passed all tests needs a defined provider cohort, the tests used, pass criteria, results, dates, and macOS test environments. The available comparison descriptions do not supply those details or connect their rankings to one common test suite. Without them, the number five and the phrase “passed all tests” cannot be verified.
