If you’re in Kiribati and want a VPN, choose based on the country you need to connect to, the devices you’ll use, and whether the provider offers safeguards such as a kill switch. A VPN you can use from Kiribati does not necessarily have a server in Kiribati: those are different requirements. No independent Kiribati-based speed, privacy, or streaming comparison is established here, so this guide compares practical fit rather than claiming a locally tested winner.
First decide what you need the VPN to do
Protect traffic while you’re in Kiribati
For public Wi-Fi or general travel use, you need a provider whose app works on your device and can connect from your current network. Your VPN exit server can be in another country; it does not need to be in Kiribati. A Kiribati travel guide recommends considering WireGuard and a nearby server, but its recommendations and performance statements are secondary-source guidance, not results from tests conducted in Kiribati: uPhone’s Kiribati travel guide.

Reach a service in your home country
Select a server in the country associated with the service you want to use, then check the service’s own access rules and the VPN plan’s capabilities. A VPN may change the apparent location of your connection, but it cannot guarantee that a streaming platform or live-TV service will accept it.
Get a Kiribati IP address
This specifically requires an exit server located in Kiribati. A provider’s ability to connect while you are physically in Kiribati is not evidence that it offers a Kiribati IP. Check the provider’s current server-location list before subscribing; the Kiribati-specific provider pages reviewed describe services usable from the country without establishing a generally available local exit server.

How the options compare for Kiribati
| Option | What the available information says | Best fit to consider | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Proton describes a kill switch and other travel features, and says nearby servers are generally faster. Its streaming guidance says streaming access requires a Plus account and a Plus server. | Travel use where a kill switch matters, or streaming when the required paid plan and server are suitable. | These are Proton’s product descriptions, not an independent Kiribati comparison. Streaming services may impose their own account or home-address requirements. Proton travel guidance; Proton streaming guidance; Proton live-TV guidance. |
| NordVPN | A 2026 general VPN comparison names it as its overall choice. | One candidate to compare if you want a mainstream travel VPN. | The general editorial assessment does not establish local performance in Kiribati or prove that it has a Kiribati exit server. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison. |
| ExpressVPN | A Kiribati travel guide names it among options for travelers. | A candidate to compare for travel use. | The guide’s recommendation is not a Kiribati-based test or independent confirmation of a local server. uPhone’s Kiribati travel guide. |
| Surfshark | A Kiribati travel guide names it among options for travelers. | A candidate to compare for travel use. | The guide’s recommendation is not a Kiribati-based test or independent confirmation of a local server. uPhone’s Kiribati travel guide. |
| Telleport | Its regional page says servers in Kiribati are “coming soon” and that the service can be used from Kiribati through a supported country. | Potentially relevant if its supported exit locations meet your needs. | “Coming soon” is not a currently available Kiribati server. Confirm current availability and locations with the provider. Telleport’s Kiribati page. |
| VPN Unlimited | The provider says it has no servers in Kiribati, while users in the country can connect to its other locations. | Potentially relevant if you need a VPN connection from Kiribati but do not need a Kiribati IP. | Its server and feature statements are provider claims; check its current location list and terms. What to check before choosing
Server location comes before brand
Write down the destination country you need: it may be your home country for a service, or Kiribati itself if a local IP is essential. Verify that location in the provider’s current app or server list. Do not infer local server availability from a page that only says the VPN works in Kiribati.
Nearby connections can help, but cannot fix the underlying network
A nearby exit server can reduce the distance traffic travels and may help connection speed in general. Actual performance still depends on the local internet connection, the route to the server, the protocol, and the VPN provider. Proton warns that slow or unreliable internet can make a VPN noticeably slower; this is not a Kiribati-specific measurement or a guarantee of acceleration. - 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
Look for safeguards that match your risk
A kill switch is useful when you do not want ordinary traffic to continue if the VPN connection drops. Proton describes its kill switch as blocking network traffic in that situation. Treat this as the provider’s feature description, not an independent audit of its implementation. Review the privacy policy and app settings of any provider you consider; the available information does not establish a comparative independent privacy audit across these services.

Check that the plan and server you intend to use support the service and device in question. Proton states that streaming through its service requires a Plus account and a Plus server; some live-TV services may also require an account or home address in the relevant country. Those conditions are specific to Proton’s guidance and do not establish the requirements of every provider or streaming service. Proton streaming guidance; Proton live-TV guidance.

Are VPNs restricted in Kiribati?
Kiribati-specific pages from uPhone and Telleport characterize restrictions or censorship as low or minimal. Those are secondary-source and provider-page descriptions, not an authoritative legal review. VPN Unlimited also states that VPN use is legal in Kiribati, but that provider statement is not independently confirmed by an official Kiribati source here. Do not treat these claims as definitive legal advice, and check applicable local rules if legality is decisive for your situation. uPhone’s travel guide; Telleport’s regional page; VPN Unlimited’s Kiribati page.

A practical way to choose
- Set your goal: public-Wi-Fi protection, access to a home-country service, or a Kiribati IP address.
- Check the required exit country: use the provider’s current server list; if you need a Kiribati IP, confirm an actual Kiribati server is available now.
- Match the plan to the service: verify streaming support, account or address requirements, and the plan tier before subscribing.
- Check safeguards and device fit: review kill-switch settings, privacy terms, supported apps, and any connection limits that affect you.
- Try the closest suitable server: compare how your actual connection behaves, and switch locations if routing or reliability is poor. A VPN cannot overcome a slow or unstable underlying connection.
What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
There is no independent test here of provider speeds, privacy, or streaming performance from Kiribati. TechRadar’s 2026 assessment is a general comparison, while provider and travel pages describe their own products or offer secondary recommendations; neither establishes a locally tested best VPN. Server coverage, plan features, streaming access, and prices can change, so confirm current terms directly with the provider before purchasing.
